Topic: Jeff Beck at Bonn

I've been a Jeff Beck fan for a long time and had really looked forward to seeing him and Joe on the same stage. I think that Joe stated that playing with Jeff was one of his ambitions. Sadly, there was no dual jam at either show in Europe. Now, I've realized that they are so different that it may never happen. Joe has stage presence. He sings. Jeff shreds on his Strat. He plays mostly hard rock. Jeff's only numbers with singing relied on his Bass player, who can't sing, and a canned tribute recording from the Grammy awards with Imelda May singing a multi track of How High The Moon. The sync was so good I have to say the entire song was recorded including Jeff's playing like Les Paul. So, you get an instrumental show that is LOUD, and some tricks with the Strat trying to sing. Good but not what I expected. Joe kicked his A§§ and certainly had the crowd at his feet. Jeff seemed to delay his start for the buzz from Joe to wear down and the crowd to wilt from the heat. JMHO, our group of lady Joe fans walked out half way through Jeff's show saying it was too loud down front and not their type of music.

Re: Jeff Beck at Bonn

I'm sure that I'm in the way minority here, but I just don't get Jeff Beck.  No doubt he is amazingly talanted and works his buns off, but I liken him to modern art.  Some people get it and some don't.  Count me in the don't category.

She tried too hard and her voice cracked. I'm sure she can sing but she tried to screech like a Rock God and flopped. That was the better half's observation. I also observed her copping a diva attitude with the set up crew before the set.

Re: Jeff Beck at Bonn

I have seen Jeff Beck in München, but I suppose it was the same set. I had an ambivalent anticipation because I had mixed reactions to Jeff´s new album whose "classical" parts I found rather schmalzy. But Jeff was actually really rocking, even the schmalz stuff was played very well. That´s partly due to his excellent band: the singing of the bass player wasn´t the best, but her bass playing was so inspired that I hardly missed Tal. The whole band was interacting in a very joyful and exciting way. A great show which imo was equal to Joe´s. (But who would compare apples with pears?)

I was told that in the back part of the venue a lot of people were leaving while Jeff was playing. Standing in front I experienced a rather enthusiastic crowd. There were  Zugabe (encore) shouts after Joe´s set and Jeff´s set.

A funny incident one evening later in Nürnberg. When Jeff made his soundcheck parts of the wall were falling down in Jericho style, so the venue had to be changed......

I'm sorry Rick, but I saw her at Crossroads and she was phenomenal. I thought she rocked. I wasn't there but I can't comment, but the time I saw her I was blown away.

Cool Deezer, She smokes on Bass and I guess we caught her on an off night. Jeff would never put someone up there that couldn't pull a ton of weight. The diss stops here.

Re: Jeff Beck at Bonn

Here are my impressions from Jeff Beck's gig in Bonn, second row.

As I have seen Jeff Beck about a year ago I had an idea what to expect though of course he played in Bonn with a complete new band. When I heard that Tal Wilkenfeld wasn’t playing the bass anymore ... I was a bit disappointed. Tal was so great in 2009.
Okay, I was sure that Jeff Beck shouldn’t have problems to find excellent musicians, but that they were that excellent. That really surprised me. Especially the interaction of the band was great, they had so much fun together in Bonn. And the people around me, too.

Jeff really let us wait ... but when the band finally appeared on stage it was wonderful to hear Jeff Beck let his strat sing.
And his new band: Wow.
Narada Michael Walden, the new drummer, was outstanding with an incredible groovy sound. Really loved his way of drumming.
Rhonda Smith on bass was absolute outstanding for me. One of the best bass solos I've heard. And I was blown away by the timbre of her voice. Rhonda really rocks or at least she rocked me.
Jason Rebello, the man on the keys, was good too.

Except two songs, everything was instrumental. But for me that is okay. It was fascinating to watch Jeff Beck play that I didn't miss singing. They played e.g. "Cause we've ended as lovers", "A day in the life", "Over the rainbow", "Nessun dorma" and a rocking "Rollin’ and tumblin". And that song blew me away. There aren’t so many good vids from this song at youtube, most of the cameras can’t cope with so much bass, but finally found something. Add 25 % more power and add the live factor and you have it.

Rollin' and tumblin' with the new band:

It's not from the Bonn gig and my impression is that Bonn was better, she worked much more with her thumbs.

Rollin’ and tumblin' with last year's band and special guest Imogen Heap:

And here’s a funny vid from Italy with the crowd doing the vocals:

During Jeff Beck's gig in Bonn Joe stood at one side of the stage and nearly watched the whole gig.
When Jeff played a song with his bottleneck I had the impression that Joe would have loved to have a place just in front of the stage to have a better look what Jeff was doing.

For me Joe and Jeff are great musicians but I don't want to compare their style. It's apples and pears.

Just found another funny one. A singing Jeff Beck:

Jeff is a great player but singing is another story.  yikes
