Topic: Jazz Players

So I was talking with my music teacher the other day, and up came the topic of music degrees... I've been looking at degrees all over the country, and I've been very tempted into doing a degree in Jazz, considering it's a genre I've been interested in for the past few years, it's part of my A-level in music I'll be studying next year, it's a well-respected degree, and I just kinda found it pretty cool! So for the past few weeks, as part of my preparation for Guitar grades 6-8, jw's been teaching me some jazz stuffffff... I also thought I'd start listening to more jazz players too; right now, I'm really into guys like: Charlie Christian, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Frank Gambale, John Abercrombie, Les Paul, Pat Martino, Stanley Jordan, and Wes Montgomery.
If any of you guys are jazz fans on here, I was just wondering if you could recommend some more jazz players  big_smile Would be much appreciated  big_smile

you have some good ones listed there Russ. Jordan's style and phrasing, the way he plays guitar like a piano is a little tough to follow, I would abandon him except for listening and enjoying. On the more contemporary side, I have listened to a lot of Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton (earlier albums better), and Mike Stern. I think Mike is the jazz/fusion equivalent nowadays to Joe. There are many other good ones out there, good luck with it and keep us updated with your progress.

Hi Rus, look into Larry Carlton and Bill Frissell. Are you looking for current players or just past legends? John McLaughlin is another Jazz/Fusion player who will blow you away.

When I last chatted with Paul Gilbert he remarked that he had started jazz lessons and that he discovered how little he knew about the guitar and how to play it....

left out a real important one Russ, THE MAN himself Les Paul. I can recommend a good one, 'Chester and Lester', with yes the other man Chet Atkins. My dad loved this one and we wore it out.

Robben Ford Russ. Blues Jazz fusion master. Check some of the duets with he and Larry Carleton on YT for inspiration. Joe has quoted him as an early influence. Your pursuit of Jazz will make you a more complete player. Good luck.

Pat Metheny is another well respected Jazz / Jazz/Fusion  Guitarist/Artist
that hasn't been mentioned so far.

good one Brack. check out that semi-afro he's sporting from '91, almost looks like wild animal hair. I can also recommend Joni Mitchell's 'Shadows and Light', recorded live with an allstar band including Pat and Jaco Pastorius. Her phrasing, bizarre tunings, and strange chord progressions make this a natural fit for these two guys.

Whilst on the subject of Joni Mitchell, check out the album, Mingus. Dedicated to Charlie Mingus. The tracks "Wild things run free" and "The dry cleaner from Des Moines" are classic's, a lot can be learnt from listening to these sorts of artists, thumbs up for all the other mentions so far, Good luck with your Jazz Journey Russ! cool  cool  cool

I haev gotten into smooth jazz due mostly to Rik Emmett.  Most know him from Triumph but check out his solo stuff.  CD's like Handiwork...and his work as part of the Strung-out Troubadours...

I am about to start taking lessons in jazz.


first video was shot at a show I was the promoter for....20,000+ people in attendance...Rik's drummer (Randy Cooke) that night went on to tour with Five for Fighting and then with Ringo Star on his last tour

Have you looked into Indiana University's jazz school?  It's one of the best in the country and their music school is rated one of the best in the world. 
Jazz Guitarists: John Mclaughlin, Larry Coryell, Terje Ripdal, Al de Meola, Larry Carlton to name a few.

I've  been a fan of Pat's since I first heard of him in the late '70s, He still may be the best all-around guitarist I've ever heard. Saw him on May 9 with his one-man band (sort of) Orchestrion tour. and then we also have the rock converts/crossovers that are worth a listen - Craig Chaquico (Jefferson Starship), Dean Parks (Steely Dan), and Darryl Stuermer (Genesis). Dean can and has played everything under the sun, his credit list is ridiculously long.
