Topic: The Union - new single on Planet Rock

The Union are launching their new single from the forthcoming debut album on the Nicky Horne show on Planet Rock (http://www.planetrock.com) on Monday from 6pm, and it will then be played in heavy rotation on the station.  They'll also be announcing news of the release date of the album.

The single is called 'Black Monday'.  It is a superb song with great lyrics, and wonderful vocals and musicianship.  Listen out for it.  I believe the band are also considering recording a TV video to accompany the song.

Thanks Marty. I also believe the track will  be available as a free download, after Nicky Horne has played it.

Re: The Union - new single on Planet Rock

Can anyone tell me, as maybe I have lost a bit of track, but what, exactly, is the point of a single these days?

It can't be sales, certainly not for The Union. So is the aim just to get a specific track on 'heavy rotation' with certain stations?

I don't understand the genre anymore. I would have thought it was of more interest to get the album sampled as often as possible on radio, or is the single the lead-in to that process?

Just seems to me that the band will spend a small fortune on a plugger tapping up radio station jockeys just to get one song a few spins in the vain hope of getting noticed.

Just don't see it. Thats like old hat. Luke M and Pete S have a lot of credibility with the fans of their old bands. Better option is like Joe. Get interactive on the net with the forum and website/Myspace/Facebook/Twitter. get on the road and make yourself accessible to the fanbase at the gigs giving you instant feedback on whats good and whats not and let your music, your rep and positive word of mouth do the rest.

Singles in this day and age strike me as a bit lazy. I certainly wouldn't buy one and hearing one track off and on seems a bit hit and miss.

It's not a single in the old sense of the word, and certainly wouldn't be sold as a one off CD single.  It's a means to an end.

In The Union's case the album won't be available for another couple of months.  They released a single a few months ago from that forthcoming album, 'Step Up To The Plate', and that has already gone down really well on Planet Rock and whetted fans appetites for the album.  'Black Monday' is the second track released, which hopefully will do equally well on radio (it's a much better song IMO).  After the launch on Planet Rock it will be available as a free download to fans.  That should keep up The Union's presence on the radio until the album itself gets released.

Regarding your comments about getting interactive, The Union are doing exactly that.  They have MySpace, Facebook and Twitter sites and regularly post personal blogs on their website.  During their tour they ran competitions via the website for fans to win the opportunity to sit in on the soundchecks and meet the band.  Much like Joe, in this digital age they are doing everything they can to make themselves accessible to fans.
