Topic: Renegade Creation

AHSmith's mention early today of Robben Ford's "Top of the Hill" got me checking to see if there was any new Ford music.  I checked and there doesn't seem to be a mention of RF's collaboration with Michael Landau, Jimmy Haslip and Gary Novak on their stellar Renegade Creation cd.  The twin guitars of Landau and Ford play off each other like two rock heavyweights.  This is an album meant to be played loud to really appreciate the sweet tone.  I've always liked RF for the type music Tres mentioned, but this album is a whole new beast.  I highly recommend a serious listen - I'd rate it Robben Ford's best effort.
This is the only song I could find for sampling.....

Re: Renegade Creation

I don't have it yet Curby, may have to order it. I really like that song, had listened to part of it on the earlier post. If you say it's his best ever, well that is high praise indeed. I only have Truth, and the Authorized Bootleg which I found in a markdown pile in Pensacola. Looking to add this to the collection, ASASP!

Hi Rick,

I'd be curious to know which songs are your favorites.  Mine are "Renagade Destruction" and "Soft In Black Jeans".
Tres - I'd have to say you'd really like this album - great disc to throw on driving.

Re: Renegade Creation

I got a bead on it Curby. went to FYE saturday and could not find it. I asked them to order it, she could not find it in the computer (they were eating). my spelling is pretty good, I question her typing. I called back this morning to the same store and this lady knew exactly what it was, could not stop gushing about how good it is, and said they had one extra copy that I had overlooked. she also touted me on an Albert King - SRV "Sessions", or something like that. so their service went from I don't wanna be here Sat., to hey I can find it and lets talk blues for a bit. awesome for me.

Re: Renegade Creation

how does it go, "If you cannot say anything good about something, then don't say anything"? There a few good songs here, but Mike Varney did not do right by them on this one. Some of the songs are weak and should have been culled. Mike has worked with a lot of artists, including exec producer of Eric Gales' last 2 or 3 releases.
If the first 10 songs sounded like the 11th, now you have something. The sound quality is fine, sound police not required. But I was expecting something much better. As is, only 2,4,5,9, and 11 are worthy of Robben's talent. I did not care for Landau's voice, but his guitar is really edgy and different.
I loved 'Truth', and have been an RF fan for many years. This one to me just does not get off the ground on so many levels, imho (goes without saying).

Sorry the album disappointed you.  I like the same songs you cited, but my favorite is "Peace".  Reminds me alot of Eric Johnson and relaxes me.

Re: Renegade Creation

I had the opportunity earlier this week to see this group live at the Ram's Head Tavern in Annapolis, MD.  Suffice it to say that it was a "master class" in guitar playing.  I was on Robben's side of the stage and could see him pretty well, tearing up a Tele and some sort of Epi semi-hollow (Sheraton?) through a....wait for it.....Dumble ODS!  His tone was generally great and at some times, amazing.  Landau was a bit low in the mix but his cleanish stuff (think Jimi) was really amazing too, not too impressed with his really overdriven lead tones.  Strangely enough, he was playing through a Hot Rod Deville, looked like 2 x 12s'.   Rhythm section of Gary Novak (drums) and Jimmy Haslip (bass) was pretty incredible too.

Nice guys, hung around and signed CD's and whatnot after the show.   I highly recommend trying to catch them at a venue near you if you're into guitar....specially any sort of rock/blues/jazz fusion.

P.S.  I really like most of the stuff on the album other than Landau's vocals aren't that great, but I particularly enjoy "The Darnkess".
