Topic: LONDON

PICTURE THIS

OUTSIDE : Shepherd's Bush Empire , London , Thursday 29th march 2007 at 5pm ..... smile ..... Standing under the venue canopy like Radio City music hall , NYC , Canopy had a white fronted notice board with with the huge letters : JOE BONAMASSA MARCH 29th : I peered out into the Very busy one way street , rain splashing onto the pavement , People rushing home with umbrellas , cars beeping their horns stuck in traffic ,  red buses going past full with people steamed up windows and the rain was coming down , I was smiling thinking The Blues had come to London.
An hour later a queue had begin to form , i stepped down from the entrance steps to see what it was like , it had snaked around the corner in the rain out of site , people with friends & loved ones , chatting , smiling , queuing , talking blues , and the car tail lights crept past continuesly in the blurring rain

INSIDE : 7PM ... Doors opened rushed to the front , got primo position just left of centre , It was like an old music hall , 3 sided wrap around balconies 3 tier high , but quite large standing only floor area , Venue filled up very quickly .... A brief about support bands , Scott Mckeon was very promising great old bluesy srv feel , but the vocals did not come out.. shame , but you could see his skills ( a cross between srv/jonny lang)
Stone sole river were solid and they have tightened & they really enjoyed themselves and the adrenilin was high

9 15 .........The House Lights Dimmed , The Audience Went Loud , A shadowy figure climbed onto the drum stool and the the bass drum kicked in SO LOUD 'N CLEAR Whooooooooaaaaa  , Shook through your body ..... and the set list Reads

TAKIN' THE HIT ...... clear and fast , Joe's voice was in top form , and the break and ending solo pushed you back it was that fierce .. Phew !
WALK IN MY SHADOWS .......... oh yeah joe was marching , i marched and stomped too , Audience screamed Whooaa hoooaah , crowd went wild
BLUES DELUXE...... Crept out off the stage and overwhemled the Audience , then Exploded into some of the Finest live soloing ever witnessed here in london
SO MANY ROADS........ Nearly set the place alight with this ,,,,,,,, could've sworn that the les paul was smokin' honestly notes like volcano lava
MOUNTAIN TIME........ Was Quite Simply Beautifully Delivered , And as we all know it can touch a very special humbling nerve , you just go quiet and watch in awe  & the solo was outstanding and greeted with rapturous applause
BRIDGE TO BETTER DAYS........ guitar chops and dancing 1 2 , 1234 breakneck speed solo to finish . note for note perfect , awesome
BURNIN' HELL........ Joe and the boys letting all hell break loose with some southern boogie blues .Audience participation time "Ain't no hell , but a burnin' hell " so loud and the crowd were going wild ,and the slide wailed around the auditorium , oh yeah
MISS YOU HATE YOU ... Joe thanked the people of london for coming , all 2000 of 'em , turned round to see a packed full theatre applaud
, lovely rendition of song which drifted into
WOKE UP DREAMING ........ This was quite unbelievable ,,,, people silenced by the blurring hand speed of joe , then shouting and screaming as he cranks up the acoustic tempo again , from blues acoustic into spanish type flamenco into classical , jazz and back into blues finish all delivered with a million notes in perfection is just "HOW" shaking head in bewilderment .....   yikes
JUST GOT PAID ........ This absolutely tore out the blocks .... oh my god ....... heavy rock/blues knockin' the Audience back on their heels , and Joe let rip with Guitar Acrobatics , the crowd cheered every time he whacked the frets , loud and ferocious and Bogie smashed out an INCREDIBLE drum solo that had a crowd who most people thought that drum solo's were boring going absolutely crazy , what a Finale , then
STARSHIP TROOPER ..... With Golden Les Paul ....... it's a lovely sad sounding song in which way to finish a show with Joe just oozing guitar playing like no other , And the large crowd rocked and swayed to the strums ........... 100 decibel roar followed in Appreciation

encore : ASKING AROUND FOR YOU ......... This was the Perfect way to bring the evening to a close ,,, Gentle Jazz tinged blues where you could hear Mark pound the bass strings and they'd reverb the whole place like a soothing purr as well as a giant Mirrorball up above the stage sprinkled thousands of beads of reflections around the hall as Joe Sung from his Soul ........ Really touching visual experience ( well it looked so cool )
JOE , MARK & BOGIE had completely won over an 2000 Audience with a Quite outstanding live show of musical masterclass that i don't think many people of London had seen for some time
The 3 Entertainers took their bows to an creshendo of screams and applause ............................................... michael     smile

and the rain came down

Re: LONDON

i was there last night, first gig of his i went to.. im only 17 but i cant get enough of his music. im went with my dad and due to his "grandpar-ish-ness" we ended up with seated seats on the second level, i got there early so we got as good seats as possible.. sorry to anyone behind me if they thought there was a lad having a fit but i was just lost in the music!
the warm-up acts were alright, but the first band had everything WAY too loud, and the EQing of the PA was wrong all night, too much bass and lower mid. BUT.. it sounded awsome from where i was, i play blues guitar myself and joes playing just hit every spot for me, his knowledge of scales and modes is un-believable and his playing just wants u to get up on stage with him aswell. His use of dynamics through the night was immense, with great control of the guitar used in the violin-esk solo parts, so quiet you could breathe louder. his line up of guitars was of course top-notch and his stage crew were awsome to keep the show rolling along at such a pace. Shame he didn't do "highwater everywhere" as its his only song that i can play all the way through! lol would have been nice to see how he performs it...
Overall i think my £15 was VERY well spent, and bunking a day of school to get there early wasnt a problem for me either... i suppose all ive got to do now is get some more tickets for his shows, let my valves warm up in my amp, grab the SG and get practicing... maybe one day ill be half the player that man is

Re: LONDON

First, MIchael, I've been like a kid waiting for a gift! Your postings ARE THE BEST!!! I'll be sad to see them end. You really do take us there with you! Again, we owe you BIG TIME and will try to give back when it's our turn. Come on over to the states!! I would love to have you read the last Harry Potter to me (yes I love those books).                           Bluesmandan, it warms my heart to hear from "youngin's". All the Bona-family cheer on those who aspire to be like Joe! No quick route however, study and play! So now I've gotten my present and will be grateful!!!!!

Re: LONDON

lots of hard work ahead, ive only been playing for 3 years, but i love blues so play it alot.. ive finally saved up to get the equipment i need to gigging.. someday ill do a performance to make joe proud lol tongue
anyways.. best get back to abusing my guitar big_smile
cheers
dan

Re: LONDON

Ok Michael,
You have really outdone yourself this time.  I love how you set the stage for the evening and took us through the entire event, song by song.  I can hardly wait until I'm standing in the crowd again feeling that energy.  7 1/2 weeks. San Luis Obispo. Can't wait!

And Joe wearing a Rory Gallagher t-shirt when he walked the streets of London,,,, LOVE YOU JOE!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: LONDON

Michael, you did it again! Wonderful review, I am glad I saw Joe in hannover so I know what you'ré talking about.

People in the States must be very jealous now. We already know what they've been missing so far. This tour was very succesful and very good.
Hope we overhere did them a favour with our reviews and messages, specially you Michael did a terrific job.

Contact me michael for your address so I can send you the DVD I made from the original Rockpalast broadcasting Tv show with the interview and Jesus Volt, french bluesband. Very nice, bit Doors, bit Zappa .but extraordinary.
I already sent that DVD to Kat and Jim 2 weeks ago, but I haven't heard if they received it. Give me a message Kat or Jim if you have, when you read this.

We all in Europe thank Joe, mark and Bogie for this wonderful tour.

Dear Joe now we wait for your vision on this tour!!!!! Please let the members of the board know what you think of it. We deserve it!!!

Andre Wittebroek.

Re: LONDON

Bravo Michael, bravo!!  Absolutely the best show review.  Couldn't wait to read it.  Once again you have taken me along on another one of your fantastic Bonamassa journeys...this time London.  Sounds like it was an amazingly AWESOME show for Joe, Mark and Bogie.  I especially enjoyed your description of 9 15 ".......A shadowy figure climbed onto the drum stool and the bass drum kicked in......."  WOW, I could just see Bogie walking onto the stage, sitting on his drum stool and start playing his drums to set the beat for the start of the show.  Seriously Michael, Joe should think about hiring you on as his personal roving show reporter.  You are the best.  Again, many thanks for all your MAGNIFICENT show reviews.  Loved them all.

bluesmandan glad you got to experience your first show.  Joe, Mark and Bogie simply ROCK!!!

Barbara

Re: LONDON

Michael....loved the way you set the scene!

And it sounds like London in particular, and Europe in general, have shown Joe, Mark and Bogie some much-deserved love.  Thanks for your awesome reviews of the shows.

Great musicians have a language & vocabulary that transcends the usual barriers & touches us on a more primitive , basic & yet complex level....

...I'll always have London in my heart, and in my soul...

Re: LONDON

Excellent review Mike - wish I could write like that

Relived the concert in reading this and we should all get the chance to hear some of it. A BBC recording studio van was parked up the side and I spoke to a technician on the way out. The show was recorded for BBC Radio 2 but he did not know for whom (Paul Jones or Bob Harris?) or when it would go out. He was not too talkative but his parting remark was "great guitarist by the way"

Re: LONDON

Hi Michael

Fantastic review. Just what I needed.
I was almost feeling that bass drum punch my chest.

I'm in construction too. Keep building em.

Re: LONDON

Thank you so much, Michael, for all your reporting. It's been such a treat to have the European tour brought to life.

Ever thought of writing a book about your experiences? You must have a lot of other great stories to tell than those you've shared here.

Nancy in Chicago

I'm just saying.

Re: LONDON

Michael, you have a real talent for story telling. I think that your narratives could be put into Braille and a deaf person could enjoy a Joe DVD!!! I still want you to consider doing a documentary! Construction is a noble job, my father and my x were both in the business. Sorry you've used all your holiday time, but it sure was great for all of us! Again, you have a real talent.....Your fan, Cathy            OK, I was about 30min outside Philly, on my way to see Albert Castiglia, when it hit's me ...braille for the deaf!!WTF! Anyway no one nailed me for it and you know what I mean...........

Re: LONDON

Wow, Michael, wonderful description as usual!! I don't think we're missing out on anything in the States because your interpretations are just as good!!

Mary

LOL-ler-tastic.

Re: LONDON

Hi Michael. Great review, you nailed it exactly.....just what I was going to say wink Wasn't it fantastic to hear Joe say how he felt to having played to 300 in London last year and then returned to a 2000+ sold out theatre this time around. Shame we didn't get to meet on the night...Carol said you were looking out for me.  Next time maybe?
