Topic: Bad rock bands !!!

Generally I'm a pretty positive kind of guy, but with a small amount of prodding I have decided to vocalize my opinion on some really bad"Rock" that seems to be floating around out there. I am going to break this down into 2 catagories: "Rock bands that don't rock" and "Bands that rock badly". I could go on forever, but I will spare all of you and just hit the very worst offenders....this may be a bit terse, but doggone it, I am irked!!

Rock bands that don't rock:
Coldplay
Radiohead
Modest Mouse...and the worst offender...
Flaming lips
The huge bands are incredibly boring or use some gimmick to sell records....I absolutely hate them....I would say that they are ruining Rock, but they don't even Rock themselves, so someone please explain to me why these lame bands sell so many copies of their drivel?? The band responsible for all these bands is the one I like to refer to as the "beginning of the end" U2 made it possible for bands that don't rock to succeed....thank you Bono and The Edge...not!

Bands that rock badly:
Their are a slew of these puppies...let me just give you a few off the top of my head...
Breakiing Benjamin
Three Days Grace
Apocolyptica...probably spelled this wrong cause I just don't care
and the ones that statred all this mainstream pap.....
Nickelback!!

Now, I will be the 1st to admit that I do like some of these bands songs....as a whole, however, this music is just so much worse than the 60"s and 70"s....not original, few impressive musicians, and only concerned with something that is "radio friendly" not Quality.

Like I said, I could go on forever, but I'd like to give you guys some room to vent so go for it....I look forward to hearing how right or wrong some of you may think I am!

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

oh don't get me started, but glad you did. yeah, I call em Bickelnack, but honestly if these bands think they rock (in their own twisted minds) then they are living in a fantasy world. glad you mentioned the Flamers. a friend of my son tried to sell him that package of crap. there are SO many others. I hear what you are saying about U2, but must defend their live performances. I saw them in New Orleans on the Popmart tour, they did rock the house, and to this day it is one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I am prepared to take the heat on this, however I own none of their music. I would like to have Joshua Tree, only for Bullet The Blue Sky. and yes, for the most part Edges guitar work sucks, but not so much on this tune. back in the day we had our bad bands, 2 come to mind - Bloodrock and Focus.

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

sorry, forgot one. Poco thought they rocked back in the 70s, but no, no they did not.

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

Well I'm glad it's not just me who can't stand the Flaming Lips, although I have a sneaking suspicion that they know that they're shite, and they're just seeing what they can get away with....

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

I think the reason people are listening to drivel is because that's what they hear all day, every day -- fed to them by the corporate machine.  Unless they purposely make an effort to branch out and risk trying something new, they are going to stay on that track like little worker bees.  They don't know any better, so they listen -- and the chain is never broken.

Now, I'm going to defend Nickelback for one song - "Never Again."  That song has emotion behind it.  OK -- the emotion is anger -- but at least they obviously felt something when that song was created.  And now I'll stop 'cuz I know how you feel about them.  'Nuf said, right?

One of my favorite things is sharing music with people.  I want to know what I'm missing, and I want them to have a chance to get turned on to something new I've heard.  Anyone who knows me knows I'm a JB lunatic and have been for about a year, so they see links on my FB page, they hear me listening to, etc.  I try to do something different occasionally -- like I put up a couple of pictures of JB and the printout about him being named best overall guitarist of the year in my office.  That got questions going, and I've been swapping CDs with office mates.  Well, I got turned on to some jazz I didn't really like, but that's OK.  The good news is my coworker loved Live from Nowhere in Particular, and a new fan was born (plus he was more energetic that day, LOL.)

All I can say is... vent... and share.  Have a party and play your favorite tunes.  Educate the masses.  I told Amsterhammer in another forum that I couldn't believe what I was missing the first time I heard Lowell George with Little Feat (OK, long time ago...).  I kept thinking, "Why didn't anyone tell me?????"  So that's our job.  Tell them.  Post the stuff you like on your FB page.  Blast your music and tick off your neighbors.  Have a party and turn on the jams.  Send people links in emails.  People will click and explore.  Give them the opportunity.

As for the corporate component -- just don't feed the machine.

I never heard any of those names before.   roll

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

I guess I'm not in the majority cause I like some of the lips music.  Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is a great album.  They are an alt band - not rockers.  I've never been a big U2 fan, but I acknowledge their importance.  They're more of a pop band imho.

That won't win them the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, that is for sure.

Some of the highlights:

Pretty little lady with the pretty pink thong,
Every sugar daddy hittin' on her all night long,
                         ...

And tease them all by suckin' on your thumb,
You're so much cooler when you never pull it out
'Cause you look much cuter with something in your mouth,

lol  lol  lol

Oh man, can it get any worse than that?

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

I was waiting for an appt yesterday and flipping through Time magazine.  Saw this article and thought of your thread.  Headline:  "Punks Take Broadway.  Green Day's American Idiot marks a new milestone in rock's conquest of the Great White Way."   That alone 'bout sums it up.

The killer, to me, was the first sentence:  "Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer and lyricist for the punck-rock band Green Day, claims he was a big fan of show tunes while growing up near Oakland, CA..."  Later in the same paragraph they say that Rock purists may see it as a sign that the California punk trio is getting soft.

Soft?  OK, I really shouldn't opine 'cuz I know nothing about Green Day except a very few songs I've heard while hitting "scan" on my radio, but c'mon?  First of all, I wouldn't consider them punk - at least not the songs on the "approved" airways list.  Second, I think all rock purists would take it as a sign that most "rock" ain't rock anymore.  Just like county music is now more similar to 70s soft rock.  What gives?

I wanna go back to the 60s/70s.  I must be getting old.   sad

Re: Bad rock bands !!!

I can't remember the last time I bought a "new" album from a rock band.  Do they still exist? Even Tom Petty, who is one of the few old-school rock bands, says his new album is more "blues"-will be interesting to hear when it comes out.  It seems so many of the lines are blurred these days about genres.  I was never one to buy something just because it was supposed to be a particular type of music.  I've learned about more good music from this place than I ever learned from radio or tv.  I hate giving music labels as to type - if it's good I'll listen/buy it.  I stopped listening to my area's "rock" stations because I disliked so much of what I was hearing, couldn't even tell you the names of the bands they were playing the stuff was so bad.  Now it's usually "classic" rock or the ipod in the car.  Tried Sirius when my car was new and it was free - couldn't get into it - seemed like the same stuff over and over, just on a longer loop.  ChrisM - I like what you said about country music sounding like 70s soft rock - most of the best country stuff came from way back (my husband loves country music  hmm  so I get to hear it a lot, and the new stuff isn't "country", although I do like some of it).  I am getting old - I miss the 60's/70's stuff.  Nothing stays the same, but change is not always a good thing.  Sorry for the ramble, and if this is off topic I apologize, but I guess this sort of hit a nerve with me.

Chris, get a copy of Nobody Likes Me the bio on Green Day. It'll give you a better understanding about where they're comin' from. Billy was a musical "Ham" since he was 5 years old cutting his first recording at the urging of his piano/vocal teacher. The "Punk" label was due to them getting noticed at the 924 Gilman Club in Berkeley. It was a Punk Rock venue, but the only place they could get on stage as they were underaged at the time. They were banned from the place the day they signed a record contract. That's not what true punks do. Obviously they have matured on their own terms and are critically acclaimed. Watch the DVD that comes with their live album Bullet In A Bible. I dig them cuz they just plain rock IMO.

I'll check it out.  I have to say I was curious about the punk label, given what I've heard and what my daughter has on hand.  Thanks for the heads up, J Dawg.  Now let me go get educated, LOL.
