Topic: Jeff Beck's only audition

Nice quote from an article in today's paper from an Austrailian interview. Jeff plays here in two sold-out shows this week.

He replaced Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds in 1965. It was the only time in his career Beck had to audition. He quickly got the job, even though he neglected to bring a guitar with him.

“I didn’t have one, because I’d sold it, so they gave me Eric’s old guitar,” Beck said, as he recalled walking into a London nightclub filled with other guitarists eager to land the job. “I played two songs and the other guitarists all ran out of the room!”

and the rest as they say, was/is history. I tend to waffle on my favorite guitarists, too many different kinds of lists, but easy to say he is in my top 5 all time. knew I'd probably never get to see him again, so I drove Mobile,AL to New Orleans by myself and back the same night, 1998 I think (Who Else tour). he and Jennifer tore up the HOB, it was amazing. I sat in the upper level and drank coffee for free all night with the bartender.

did you manage to score any tickets to those there?, sure would like to see a post on it. don't have any hopes of him getting too close to AL, maybe he'll do ATL.

Jeff is in the top 5 of my all time list too. No one else has his touch and versatility IMO. Another of Joe's dreams that will be fulfilled. One of mine as well.

ouch, that will be worth the wait. I won't pay the scalpers either, no matter who it is. I think it was about $45 with service fee for the NO show in '98. it will be a little like a Ronnie Scotts I guess in Bonn heh. turn em loose on them Spanish Boots !

That mental image of Beck playing on a borrowed guitar and the faces falling on the rest of the hopeful auditionees for the Yardbirds just keeps me laughing. Hope no one got hurt in the stampede for the door.  lol

This was a recent interview.  Sure, river water under the bridge, but again, he's Jeff Beck and I find him pretty straightforward and self-effacing.  But we're not friends or band mates either, and I'm not recording his album for him, so......

Maybe a recent interview, he was talking about a time in 1965 when that audition happened, or doesn't that matter ? He is also very critical of his own playing, which is a sign of a good player.

Yes, the interview was two weeks ago in Australia where he was on tour as well as the other JB. It was just an amusing anecdote he threw out. A very independent man who loves his privacy. I enjoyed his commentary a while back about why he constantly changes band members. He needs the challenge of fresh ideas to keep his playing evolving.  What a great musician!
