Topic: Melbourne, Australia 1st April 2010

Just got home from the Melbourne gig at the Corner Hotel. Like Rod S after the Sydney show, it's a little difficult to write a full review so I will just put some random ramblings!

This was the first time I have seen Joe and him and the band were phenomenal. I couldn't quite believe I was standing 15 feet away from Joe watching him play the amazing songs I have heard on disc, seen on DVD, You Tube etc. It was an  unbelievable show.

The set list was very similar to Sydney and Oklahoma, but no Bridge To Better Days, but there was Django as an intro to Mountain Time.

The Corner Hotel is a pub - kind of a similar layout to the venue in the Rockpalast DVD. So, no seating (my feet are killing me!) and it was packed. It is an iconic Melbourne venue (I have seen Mick Jagger with Joe Satriani on guitar play there) and Joe did it proud. The crowd reaction was fantastic, and Joe seemed to enjoy himself.

Joe was quite amused about an Australian song he found out about by a band called The Angels (or Angel City as they were known in the States). The song is called 'Am I ever Gonna See Your Face Again', to which the crowd make a colourful response (you can probably find it on You Tube somewhere). Not sure if Joe will ever work that one into the set for the next Royal Albert Hall gig  smile

Rick got booed when he was introduced, as he is from Sydney (that's what Melbourne people do), but that's ok as he called us losers (Sydney recently beat Melbourne in a soccer final), so I think it was even.  It was good natured booing  cool

He used 4 guitars: a Strat shaped guitar (the Music Man I think), 2 Les Pauls (a black or dark blue one and a tea burst (?) one), and the Tele shaped guitar (Gigliotti?). Oh, and the acoustic for Woke Up Dreaming.

My wife and I were blown away by the gig. I hope Joe, Bogie, Carmine and Rick enjoyed it and will be back as soon as they can.

Amazing.

That Angels song is ace - I can just picture the crowd singing "no way, get..............(censored) Superb. Was Doc Gleeson in the crowd per chance?  smile

I have been a fan for over 25 years even though I'm in the UK. My mate emigrated to Sydney (he was at JB's gig on my recommendation) in 1981 and kept sending me their albums. A reciprocal arrangement you could say.

Great summary Grey.  I was there also but unfortunately not as close to the front as you.  The group of people I was with met up afterwards - we were all on such a high from the gig (no drugs involved!) that we just had to share our feelings over a beer.  Sentiment was that we had witnessed THE most outstanding blues/rock guitarist of our time.  We simply couldn't flaw Joe's performance nor that of the band.  So tight and professional.  Sound techs were spot on.  A night I will NOT forget and feel very privileged to have been there for his Melbourne debut.

Are we ever gonna see Joe's face again?  We damned well better!!  smile

B-t-w, Joanne Shaw-Taylor was a great support act and I wish her well for her career.  Her husky vocals were a bit lost in the mix but she exuded plenty of energy and got the crowd pumped.  One of the guys I was with was astounded "that a chick could rip a guitar like that".  Having seen her YouTube clips and heard her CD it was no surprise that she delivered the package that she did.

Sensational night that I'll talk about for years.

WOW! what a show, I have been to many concerts and I have never seen anyone play the guitar like that!  I have been following JB for a few years now, it was great to have him and his band finally here in Melbourne. Thanks Joe hope to see you back soon, and big congrats to the crowd, well behaved and very welcoming to our guitar hero! smile

My hat's off to you Aussies.  You are true fans!!  I can't imagine waiting so long for a show. Now you have my sympathies. You're going to want more. It's the nature of the addiction. Thanks for the "fix". I'm happy for all involved.

Peter, Thanks for the mention of JST. I always play "White Sugar" first and then one with vocals. Always get the "That was a chick?" response.

The Tele shaped guitar wasn't a Gigliotti, it was actually a custom Tele by a Sydney luthier by the name of John Comacchio, John let me play the guitar briefly before he presented it to Joe it is a beauty and will be featured on my site soon. After the show we were backstage and Joe called the Tele "Ace"

The anticipation of Joe's first tour of Australia was building all week, couldn't wait! To me this
was one of the most eagerly awaited concerts to look forward too in a "small" venue. One thing
is for certain, i pushed my way quietly and unashamedly as close to the stage as possible.
You know for a fact it will be an up close and in your face concert!! Did he deliver? If i can use
a Tull word "My God" what a stunning concert!!! Outstanding, awesome. 130 minutes of pure
energy! Highlights there were so many i lost count!! You could also tell Joe & Co were really
enjoying their time in Melbourne, this is one concert i will rave about for a hell of a long time
they went down a storm.

Hey GuitarNoize, i`m richard that spoke to you outside the factory on wednesday afternoon. ..how did the interview go..would you have info on title of acoustic song joe did by himself at the show..

I am a huge fan of Joe and i just found out he toured Australia and i missed out.......Not happy Jan!!!!! I have joined his newsletter hopefully next time he comes out i won't miss out.  Please come back soon!!!!!!

Jocelyn and I visited Melbourne for a week back in 2001, and we both fell in love with your wonderful city and country. We did the Great Ocean Road one day (the Loch Ard Gorge was almost a spiritual experience for us), Philips Island the next day to see the fairy penguins, and then rented a car and explored some of my family roots out Warburton way on the third day, being sure to stop off at a few wineries on our way back to the city. We also checked out your museums and your Queen Victoria Market. We even went to the MCG for a footy match one day! The city was so clean and attractive, and all the people were so polite, we will never forget it! It was a magical visit that we hope to someday repeat.

To hear that you were all so welcoming to our guitar hero Joe just reinforces our affection all the more. Yea, Melbourne!

We love Joe and we can't wait to see him back next year!! He will love the Palais when it's full of adoring fans.
