Topic: Dennis Cornell Plexi

Wondered if anyone had a view on these?

I've just test driven the Plexi 18/20 and the Romany 1 x 12 and I have to say I am totally blown away by them.

The Plexi is Joe all over- MASSIVE sound from a small amp and totally a cranked plexi in every respect. Very Jubilee- ish in a way. The Romany is obviously more tweedy and still amazing- great for crunch. EC uses them on stage.

You could easily mic them and play very big venues, and equally, they'll crank at very low vols at home.

I am all over them like a rash- superb, but then at that price they darn well should be.

Watch this space- I have a case of G.A.S. coming on.....

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.

Re: Dennis Cornell Plexi

I know that Gary Moore and Robin Trower used the 18/20 to record some of their last albums. It does sound HUGE and great. I'll have to give it a try one of these days but now I'm really into my old 73 Super Reverb that I've just finished blackfacing... sweeeeeet!  cool

I just scored a 3 month old one on the 'bay for £900! That's a saving of £500 on list.

I have the Cornell 45/50 and it's a monster.  It really nails the plexi sound. However, even switched down to 15w it's very loud before it overdrives. Sounds fantastic though. Play it gently and you get nice clean sounds, start hitting those strings harder and it just rumbles you to heaven.  Listen to Free's Fire and Water and you're there.  I'm thinking of getting the Plexi 7 for smaller venues.   There's no headroom in the 7, but if you want overdriven sounds at a low volume, it sounds great.  I played a Marshall Class 5 yesterday which is £299 as opposed to £750 for the Plexi 7.   I'm currently thinking about keeping the hand-wired 45/50 for larger gigs and using the Class 5 when you just need to turn up for a jam or play in a small pub.    I didn't like the overdriven sound of the Romany amps. A great sound, just not for me.

I think that if I'd have bought the 18/20 combo it would have probably been more versatile.  Switch to 5w for small pubs and use 20w when I need more head room and mic up if necessary.  However, having bought the 45/50, I've already made my bed ...
