Topic: Newbie and gear....

Not sure which part of the forum....

ell- I discovered JB 5 days ago, despite having a CD of his kicking around my boot (trunk) for a year or so....
I want to say a few things...
1. I have not been moved by a guitarist this way since I first heard David Gilmour.
2. What a lovely bloke
3. How accessible!
4. If anyone wanted a blueprint on social media engagement and marketing, JB would be the king...
5. The solo in Stop! is breathtaking...

JB LP Goldtop No. 290- Aged...rather like me.

Re: Newbie and gear....

No worries. Introductions is the right place - to well, introduce yourself.

Bit embarrassing to have had the CD rumbling around in the motor for a year but not giving it a spin. Just look at what you missed! Better late than never. Theres a fair bit to catch up on but the good news is - there is no bad news!

There is breathtaking music throughout his entire catalogue. If you have heard 'Stop' then maybe it was BOJH that was rumbling around in the boot. In which case you need to get 'Live - from nowhere in particular' for what is one of the best sounding live CD's I have ever heard. Blues Deluxe is an enormous album, although if you thuink the solo on 'Stop' is the nuts wait until you hear his cover of Led Zep's 'Tea for one' on the album 'You and Me'.

Could go on and on and on - but that is the fun of it for you - discover and enjoy. Looking at your list of gear then I imagine you'll be most at home in the gear section. Even as a non-player I find reading that stuff both informative and hilarious at times. Guitar geek nirvana.

Re: Newbie and gear....

Hi and welcome Jakey. Hansamike said it all, and his discography recommendations are spot on.  I would add that his live intro to Sloe Gin on his current tour is another solo that will make you pause to take a breath and shake your head in amazement. Join the world of Bonaholics. Just wait until you hear him live for the first time. Run out and get a ticket right now, his shows in the UK all sell out. (I assume due to the use of "boot" you are from there.)  You have no idea!

Hey thanks for the welcome guys- I have tkts for Hammersmith. One of my regular jamming partners (Reeves Gabrels if you recall his brilliance) has worked with him a few times- Carmine too (although I know he's not on this tour) and sorted it!

Already in gear section and lapping it up- trying to add value- the pursuit of tone perfection is a long road and one I know only too well!

Bonamania might just cost me more money.....now where's that eBay link to the Silver Jubilee Marshall?

PS- I am also intruiged by Joe's tone road- being a Gilmourhead I tend to use his methods- loud clean amp, and use pedals to shape. Joe is more about amp tone, although he has the rooms to play in to do that!

I do something similar in this same space- so very noticable!! And very commendable. Engaging with his fans is what seems to have made him who he is.

Ahhh. Another tone junkie. It's enormous fun for me trawling the gear section posts following this search of Holy Grail proportions. I imagine, one day in a far and distant future........................

" Master, we have finally found the solution for which we have all so long sought. A tone so pure and yet full with colour and depth. Members of the Cult of Bonamassa say it is to die for."

"And does this wondrous device have a name my young friend?"

"As yet not Master. The owner of the Chinese slave workshop where they are assembled has not yet christened the device. We have asked if we may assist in this momentous occasion. It is said the device has the Power of Marshall and the mystical ambience of Dumble. Guitarists we have spoken to say they would cream for it. Taking these thoughts we came upon the name 'MaCrumble'."

"Hmmm. Sounds like something you might order to follow your burger. I think this would not be fitting to put before the Council of Gearheads. You must think of something else."

"Well Master, t'is said the device is the ultimate development of tonal precision in solid state."

"Well there you are then. Precision in solid state. Something with that in the name or strapline. Then millions of guitarists taking this new device to a concert can truly be said to be 'Taking the PI$$'."

And of course, I am. But it is tongue in cheek as I love hearing you guys talking about something in a language I can barely understand.

The two guitarists in my own band, Prima and Donna,  are currently in GAO (Gear Aquisition Overdrive). Last weeks rehearsal started with the installation of some new 'the dogs nuts' Czech tubes which in the final hearing were clearly a milifractional improvement over the old.

They still don't get it that if we stopped consuming so much alchohol we would sound miles better anyway! Buts that a whole other story..........................
