Topic: Any Bass Players?

Just about to start learning. My bro is the guitarist so wanted to let him do his thing so chose to start with the bass, assumed 4 strings would be easier than 6 (please don't shout at me I know playing bass is just as hard).

So managed to get myself a Crafter (Cruiser/Cruzer? by Crafter P bass copy for just under £50. I know its not advised to buy off of ebay (and once I start to learn I won't be) but I figured it didn't matter for a first timer - gotta be a result for £50 right? Am sure I can sell it on again for more than that if I don't get on with it (although as its my first baby I doubt I ever will). Was led to believe they are a decent entry level make. Didn't want to pay much so I don't think I could have got much better for that money.

Any views?

Am waiting for it to come (monday hopefully) then its onto looking for an Amp and accessories - any advice, tips, reccomendations? I can get an Epiphone 15w amp and kit pack for £80 but again I am keeping an eye on ebay as I have seen some decent bits going cheap on there again - 30w Peaveys and even some small Hartke and Marshall combos going cheap.

Well I'm really excited and I have Mr Bonamassa to thank in a round about way, he has really inspired me - helped rekindle my love of music and made me take that first step even if its not a regular guitar - I think learning an instrument is something everyone should do (like learning another language - which I still have to do as well lol)

Can't seem to get a link to the guitar as its a javascript but its on the crafter website

Re: Any Bass Players?

Cue the bassist jokes.......

Actually here's a lead guit joke-

What's the difference between an Ouzi 9mm and a blues guitarist?

A. an Ouzi only repeats itself 30 times a second

"Who wants an orange whip? Orange whip? Orange whip? Three orange whips...."

Re: Any Bass Players?

I lol'd

Anyway I have endured joke about worse things than my instrument (oh matron) before so I am sure I can take it. Part of the reason was so that I could help my bro out, he has some real potential, he has only been playing for just under 2 years (less than that under an actual teacher) and he is already pretty damn good - will stick some vids up eventually. Anyway was thinking he could do with someone to play with regularaly and thought the Bass would compliment him without challenging him drectly and whilst still allowing me a musical outlet. Also I am still hoping that I will pick up the bass quicker than I would have a 6 string that way I might be of some use to him at least

Bass is not so hard, but hard to play well. Learn your scales and you're sorted.

I have a very rude one and I hope it isn't too much for the spirit of the forum (if it is, I apologise in advance)

It is damned funny....

Hahaha

I do hope people are not offended. If so I'll remove it.

Re: Any Bass Players?

Jakey,

offended or not, I loved it.

BTW GreatRed - just started myself. No way will I be asking BJJ for tips for at least 6 years. He could only reply out of pity. I want to get beyond f****** useless to plain totally useless before I endeavour to even broach the subject again.

Good luck

Re: Any Bass Players?

my lovely wife bought me a secondhand Peavy International about a year ago, she also got me Bass Guitar for Dummies... hmm

It is great to just sit there and jam along to something, although 100% agree with the easy to play but tough to play well quote above, - as Blackie Lawless would say it is "the instrument of ignorance"

I find 4 strings are easier, - have a problem remembering all of those chords with 6 strings! As has been said look up some blues scales and learn them and look up some tabs on "sunshine of your love" and have a go.

Re: Any Bass Players?

Well been playing for 2 days, know the open string notes now and am learning the fretboard notes - simple repetition was never so hard lol Its like learning a new language. Fingers just beggining to callous up ouch

Know the basic tune for smoke on the water so far haha

The bass was in a little worse shape than expected. The knocks and scratches were all superfical but one of them was pretty large and wasn't really described as such. The bigger problem though was the end of the Nut next to the E string was broken off. Not a major problem I don't think it is effecting the action or sound but I have plucked the string hard a few times and its pooped off out of its guide and stuck oustide the nut. Would have been nice to mention that.

However, for £47 what was I expecting? I am well chuffed really. I have a guitar and its my baby  :D

So now I have to sort out everything else I need. What do you think of this:

Everything I need? Good value? Good Quality? Any better alternatives? Should I mix and match myself? Be Scouring ebay?

Thanks all
