Topic: Ne'er do wells

Every place I look I see people texting on the job instead of paying attention to what they're getting paid to do.  I send the garbage out to the curb; 10 minutes later I find the miscreant still on the porch texting.  mad

I watched a road striping crew today and all 3 of them at one point pulled out their million dollar phones and started texting.  Watched a bunch of ditch diggers yesterday.  Same thing.  roll   Maybe they should have gotten green cards.

I need a paper faxed, she's texting at the fax machine...fax still there unsent.   mad

My nurse blows me off cause she got a text from the little miss knot head in the next cubicle.  Then when I start grumbling, she runs back and tells the whole office I'm a difficult patient.  tongue

My boss is so happy I'm back at work.  Only half of my staff is. wink

That's why they're called Generation Text.  I especially love (loathe) the ones that text while they are driving cars, trains, etc. Darwinian extinction in action. A shame they take so many innocents with them. End of rant.

Re: Ne'er do wells

It's a sign of an ever increasing ,non-social society. I don't get it!! I thought phones replaced the telegraph??&#$%@  Invest in thumb replacements now. All because they don't want to talk. Very odd. On a lighter note, BJJ is BACK!!!! big_smile     C  for "call me"

Re: Ne'er do wells

Back at work BJJ, I hope you are not over doing it!!!

Are you really that recovered? If so then fantastic  big_smile  That is wonderful news  cool

As to the post itself I agree totally. Here in the UK though the nurses are not allowed to do anything like that, certainly not around the patients.

You being well enough to return to work has really made my day  big_smile  Cool  cool

Re: Ne'er do wells

Gee BJJ. One day you walk three flights, then talk of yoga again, now back on the job. Way to go man!
On the text rant, Amen Brother! Thank God I have big hands and the keys are so small or this geezer might be tempted.

Re: Ne'er do wells

yes I'm recovered...sorta.  Not 100% but I'm never that, anyway.  smile   My associate is PLEASED.  He figured it out right quick when he started covering my area.

I was cocky.  I said 6-8 weeks. only.  But the steroids (and udder meds) almost ruined me.  Conventional wisdom says 14-16 weeks before remerging into the sun.  It's been 10 weeks.  I have to work.  Alpha male thing?  I dunno.

I go through my emails with a flame thrower and I will NOT be texting on company time.  big_smile   My kids can't even sit at the table without thumbing.  At least it's on vibrate.  Funny though... if I say "Hey! this is a family meal tonight.  Lose the phones."  I rediscover that they can converse.

At least texting allows us to keep the habit of thumb- sucking all life long in a socially accepted way.

That is a classic summary of the situation Günter!  lol

Honestly, I have a cell phone with unlimited texting and most times the phone is at home turned off. You may then ask, why do I pay for unlimited texting? Because I have an 18 year old daughter who has her own phone under my plan, that's why. Because I work for AT&T in the communications industry, I rarely talk on the phone at home. About the only time I actually answer the home land line is if I'm passing a phone and it rings, I'll check the caller ID and if I recognize the number and want to talk, I'll pick it up. Technology? Seriously, I could almost live with out it. How then do I like to communicate? How about over a nice glass of wine, beer or cocktail in a small group of good friends/family. Over a nice meal would be good too. Or even at a great Blues/Rock show.  wink

love the description Roy, - classic example of the difference between young and old (no disrespect), - however having just been at a conference for the IT within education sector in the UK I conclude that your outlook is not universal, (audience was mainly 30/40+) - that audience were tweeting away as the speeches were going on with the live (real time) feed being shown behind the speaker. - Twitter emancipates? - I would agree right up until somebody in the audience logged into an alias account and tweeted a complimentary/disrespectful (depends on your viewpoint) comment about the looks of the young lady who was handing out the microphone for the questions from the audience section, - not so sure she felt emancipated!

Sorry to say that the anti brigade or those that do not get it are just enlarging the divide between young and old... why do young people no longer wear watches?..... Why would they wear a devise that only has a single function???  smile Those youngsters still go out and engage with each others, they still party, they still see bands, they still eat together socially, - it could be said that they do all that and a whole lot more than the older generation.

Re: Ne'er do wells

I have no judgement call on any of that or Roy's preference.  I get like that, too.  And Guenter is right, as well.  Call me and let me hear some music or brag on some fun...cool.

What I'm objecting to is the multi tasking BS on company time, so to speak.  Focus, you morons.  Do your jobs.  I was at a conference two years ago where the main man said turn your phones off or else.

Of course some guys phone went off and the man stopped the meeting and said if you answer that you will either give $100 or I will have you escorted out.  Over 600 people watched that **** turn his phone off and stammer out an apology.

Re: Ne'er do wells

i think I get where you are coming from bif Jeff, but I think that you are looking at a respect/politeness/discipline issue rather than a technology one, - yep sure technology has given excuse to be rude but it is not the fault of the technology....Paper gave us the tool to be spread education or be objectionable but when the kid first wrote a note to his classmate telling them that they stink they did not ban the paper, - they clipped them round the back of the head and told them not to act in that way!

And how many people are posting up on this forum in work time?????

Hey how about the i-pood generation?......A lot of technolgy is based on communication but the walkman and subsequent i-pod explosion has given us the excuse not to smile or even acknowledge our fellow humans!!

Re: Ne'er do wells

I actually agree with you both Ian and BJ. And I do like some of the forms of technology such as E-mail. I've also embraced Facebook, but still can't bring myself to tweet or twit, whatever it is. The idea of knowing what someone is doing, no matter who it is, every moment of their life is very foreign to me. I know, I'm an old poop, but I've got my fill of technology by working in a technical field for the past 35 years.

And Ian, I did not take that as disrespect, I am old but still very young at heart. wink Just look at the music I listen too and the shows I've been at in the last 5 years. Remember, a very young forum member and I drove over 1,740 miles over 3 days just to see a New Years Eve Blues/Rock show. And I'm not even related to this young fellow. lol As I told Tony Knowles who is just a little older than I am, "I hang out with young, smart people just to make myself appear young and smarter rather than old and feeble". I think it's working? lol Of course, I could be wrong.  roll

Roy

P.S. Of course that doesn't explain why my sister Lynn, who is 71 years young, goes to shows with me. I guess it runs in our family blood. wink By the way, I'm typing this at my desk at work and I better not do that, I don't want BJ yelling at me. yikes Oh, and I do work very hard BJ, this is just what I call a "mental break".

Re: Ne'er do wells

Technology and the associated devices are tools for communication. E-mail, facebook, texting, twittering, etc. are wonderful tools to help communicate, but (especially in the working world) they do not replace the need for direct contact by phone or face to face.
I have been on the "cc" list for numerous e-mails that became an electronic game of tennis. Two people batting an issue back and forth across the (inter) net and not solving anything. I have had to stick my nose into many of these and tell our staff "pick up the damn phone and call them"! Usually a 5 minute conversation will solve the issue and 10 people on the cc list won't have to waste their time reading every response.
The REAL unfortunate thing is that our business (like many) thrives on relationships and repeat clients. You cannot make a connection with people via e-mail.
And that has absolutely nothing to do with age.

Re: Ne'er do wells

What I'm looking at; is exactly what I said before, even though all these other factors come in to play in many ways.

One more time,  this is not a stab at technology or manners or youth.  My observation and my complaint is lack of focus, discipline and work ethic.  Stand in the middle of a busy street and text when the traffic goes by and the machinery is running.  You're fired!

I'm standing at the cage with money in my hand and you make me wait to pay you, while you blab and gossip?  You and the road striper can text/gossip in the unemployment line.  Fired.

Unemployment is devastating in the new economy and you take 90 minutes to write a 20 minute report because you are texting?  or picking your nose?  You're FIRED.

Let me text Carmine, Joe, Bogie or Rick.  They can text me back between songs.  Oh well that's different...  roll I beg to differ.

This is not an argument for any of you gents.  My point is not about communication.  It's about ripping off yourself, your customer, your teamates and your employer because you're distracted by whatever. I just picked text as a place to start.

I'm a simple man.  My point is simple.  It could be talking on the phone or filing your toenails, instead of texting.  I'm at odds with this ADD, multitasking, psychobabble that says it's ok to be a screw up because you're unable to focus on the task at hand.

And then whine in a bar cause nobody understands you or will give you a chance.

I know some staff that say they do better when they're multi-tasking.  Bull... some drunks say they drive better after a coupla pops, too.   hmm

Please don't take offense, just think about it.  wink  This thread just went like some of my conversations at work and home.  Perhaps it's my inability to communicate clearly.  I say what I think is ABC and somebody will say what you mean to say is BCC.

No it's ABC.

Somebody else:  So in a case of bBaBC you have to realize that the backyard needs raking.  yikes

No it's ABC.  and you're all fired.   lol  The janitor says Mr Jones I heard you say ABC.  You're promoted!   lol

Growing up is a good idea.  Being responsible with some integrity is a good idea.

Well put BJJ. I have employees in a service industry. If I find them texting on the job, they are ripping me off and probably antagonizing my customers. They're fired. I don't get it either. It's like an alien nation sometimes.
