Topic: Riverside show

What a night!! We got to do the meet and greet with Joe he signed my pickguard from my 50th anniversary LP took some pix and yaked it up a bit with us. One heck of a nice guy very humble freindly and accomadating. The show was fantastic he played his you know what off! The last song was with Jason Bonham, Glenn Hughes and I didnt catch the keyboard players name. The song was a good rocker was real neat to see Jason being a big fan of his dad John.

My only critque would be and this a matter of taste was Glen Hughes over use of his screaming falsettos. They were over the top and just too much.... didnt work for me at all. Honestly I felt it hurt the song, many others in the crowd echoed the same sentiment. While his style worked for Deep Purple alas those days are gone. I much prefer Joes singing to Glenns over use of his screaming falsettos anyday. Advice to Glen..... buddy its 2010 not the1970's and your playing with Bonamassa not Purple.... time to move on.....grow...... expand your horizons, your falsetto is great if used tastefully. Actually Joe can and will do better than this guy....unless Glenn just sticks to Bass playing and some backing vocals......way back big_smile .........YMMV

That said it that didnt diminish the pleasure of two hours of Joe masterfully doing what he does best. Thank you again to Roger and especially Joe for their kindness and making this a wonderful night for my wife and I. Oh and I loved the tone he wrenched out of his red 355 gibby. The man is amazing!!!

The, chair rockin on the cats tail scream, is exactly why I have never owned anything GH has ever been a part of. I guess I will make an exception for this new record but I hope he tones it down a bit. Maybe he just got a little too excited last night.

That kind of singing would be an instant turn-off for me as well. A person doesn't have to like everything Joe is involved in. I'll just have to wait and see. Fortunately, it's still just a side project.

Re: Riverside show

I look at it this way Joe's show was a 5 star gourmet dinner feast, last song with screamin Glenn was dessert that wasnt  palatable. Still it was an awesome show something we really enjoyed especially meeting with Joe then watching his performance which you can see he puts his heart and soul into it.

Re: Riverside show

I enjoyed it, but yes GH's earsplitting vocals were a bit over the top. Loved "Young Man Blues" and I'm glad to see that "If Heartaches Were Nickels" is back in the set list. When I get the videos up I'll post the links here.

Re: Riverside show

Great show all the  way around. My kid (17 years old) was blown away by the acoustical piece. Also, it seemed to me that Glen hughes was a little nervous. He was all over the place and used his top end adnauseam. However, his voice is unreal. If he can take it down a notch it will be much more palpable.

THANKS JOE!!!!!!!!

Re: Riverside show

Welcome to the Forum Scott123. This concert brought a few new faces to the world-wide band of Joeholics. I'm glad to see you join in. See my post on another link for a different view.  http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtop … 08#p143508
Glenn is a whole different aspect that many will dislike. He comes from a very different genre. His fanbase has viewed this merger with skepticism as well. Time will tell.
Keep those posts coming. Many different viewpoints make this Forum a lively place to be.

Probably best if I just post the link to my youtube channel. I'll try to get more videos up over the weekend.

I have the "Supa Dupa Group" vids up so far.

Actually, David Coverdale sang the song with Deep Purple. Glen was backup singer/bass at the time. Look up the song on Youtube live from the California Jam in '74, and you will hear how the song should be sung. Or check out Ronnie James Dio singing it with Rainbow live a couple of years later, and prepare to be blown away!

That screaming is bad and should be stopped...IMO of course  wink Although I do like his regular singing voice, I think it's a really cool, unique rock voice.

Re: Riverside show

I just became a Joe fan recently due to Glenn Hughes going on about his playing....and for good reason! So Riverside was my first Joe show. I've seen Glenn several times before. Joe didn't disappoint...brilliant setlist...passionate playing and the sound was PERFECT!!! I had a permanent smile on my face all night! Joe has a fan for life right here. I was also thrilled to hear that "Black Country" aka "something else soon" would make a two song appearance. Glenn is a passionate player and vocalist and there are times he lets it rip....and on Mistreated he let it rip....did you really expect anything else? If you're unfamiliar with Glenn's work his vocals might catch you off guard....ONCE...but like I said, he can let it rip and does once in a while...doesn't bother me in the least! He has a GREAT rock voice and it was on display during the first Black Country song...an outright rocker! When can I pre-order that cd?! Quite frankly, I think Joe,Glenn Derek & Jason just might set the rock world on fire....I wouldn't bet against it. So to recap....Met some Joe fans from here on the forum (Hi Libby, Steve & RickB) and saw some of the best musicians in the world play an awesome set....Shot 663 photos...yes, 663 (Thanks Jim M for facilitating the pass!) and I'm telling anyone who will listen (and even some who won't) about Joe!!! Come on back to Riverside Joe, I bet you sell it out next time!!!   big_smile

Re: Riverside show

Wow never meant it to turn into a lets roast Glenn fest. Im very aware Glenn is talented guy. I was in the business and on the road back in the day.... wow way back in the 70's. My only point was the overuse of his falsetto embellishmenst they're great till overdone In singing as with any other instrument you can overdo it and it loses the effect you were trying to get . Plus factor the guys were doing their first live go of it. Just wanted to clarify I dont want knock the guy just felt he went a little overboard and it didnt serve the song. There was never any doubt as far as Glenns talents which are many. Ill bet when they record that tune it will be more dialed in. I was there listening at 3:30 to the rehearsal and his use of the screaming falsettos were spot on and very effective.  Just a great show and yes I hope he remembers where Riverside is in the future and returns........with Joe not getting out of the house much and all  big_smile

Btw I tried one of his signature Les Pauls some months ago and it was up there tone wise with my #1 59 LP different but GOOD different..... what a great axe. I have been searching for one for a few months now with no luck. Like trying to find hens teeth. I guess my meeting Joe wednesday brought me some good mojo. My long search paid off got number 061 should be here friday. One of my old contacts found it for me back east.... brand new in da box at a good price to boot.

Re: Riverside show

Wow, you touched a nerve there Mark. Small sparks start big fires.
Joe's excursion to the land of Rock has left some shaking their heads. He's always maintained that Blues is the foundation of all that came afterward. Is Hair Metal next?  lol
Mistreated is a Blues song, just a bit removed from the Blues one expects. I thought those passages were in keeping with Glenn's interpretation of the angst expressed in the song's title. He's had some pretty hard mistreatment along the road, a lot his own. That could have been his expression of being one step ahead of those demons he's mentioned. I saw and heard some soul exposure there. JMHO
Ya gotta admit hes got some pipes! How does he hit those notes?
Sweet you got that axe.  cool

Re: Riverside show

Jim reassured me on Facebook, that Joe's divergence with the "new" band was a "little light relief" and would not deter him from what he has worked so hard to achieve. Now I have heard some concert footage from Riverside, all I can say is that I'm still not sure it is the right direction. I have great admiration for Glen and Jason, both of whom I admire and respect, I have no knowledge of Mr Sherinian, but he seems to do a great job. I'm affraid I concur with the sentiment about the falsetto screaming Glen!

Geoff, are you ready for this? Some Sherinian with his own kit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTduOgLle-8 There's some light relief. Rick's rig put some serious restrictions on the band. Glenn's voice just scratched the surface.  roll
Hang on!  yikes This could be some groundbreaking stuff.

Re: Riverside show

I think Joe will explore lots of different musical projects in his career. Its part of the growth process and makes the whole musical journey fun and fresh. I think it builds a musicians skill and gives him a wider palette to draw from. Musically speaking I beleive the blues are his roots but his tree will grow like a mighty oak with branches in all directions. Will everyone like everything he does, of course not, thats part of the journey. From what I have seen Joe has the talent to take center stage and pour his heart out, rip it up and more importantly he also knows how to step back and serve the song which is an art in itself that separates the good from the greats. I look forward to watching this amazing kids career grow and blossom.  Theres good stuff to come for sure!! Thanks RickB for the kind words and yea Glenn has an amazing set O pipes and Im looking forward to what comes out of that collaboration. Mostly though I cant wait to see Joe take the stage at Crossroads festival, hes is the new guard and deserves to be on that stage.
