Topic: MiZ - I need to share this band!

Within the past year I've discovered this band called MiZ that I think people here would really enjoy.  They opened for the Derek Trucks Band last fall at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg PA (I posted about the show at the time, maybe some remember)... I unfortunately didn't make that show (only heard a recording), but by all accounts it was a huge success and the Trucks audience really dug them (so you all will too)... they actually got a better reception than Derek, with several standing ovations.  Now a certain percentage of the audience were there for them (they do have a following), but many were quite surprised to get such a good opener.  The theater was very happy with them and they'll be playing there again in the future.

They're not "blues" per se, but there's a little bit of everything in there... folk, rock, country, bluegrass, blues, jazz, funk, reggae.  Mike Miz (short for Mizwinski) is a true talent as a guitarist/singer/songwriter/lyricist... his originals are consistanly solid, quality songs that touch you and stick with you.  Not to mention the covers... always great choices and some of the best renditions I've heard.  And to top it all off, Mike is also just a great guy.  He also performs solo acoustic too, but the whole trio together is called MiZ.

Anyway, I went to see them last night (they opened and closed for Scrapomatic... see other thread) and I just gotta share my friend's recording.  Not only was the show itself awesomely beautiful, but it's a top-notch recording... a soundboard/Schoeps (on stage) matrix.  I highly recommend downloading this show, or at least listening to it on Archive if you don't download... enjoy... smile

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

So, I'm curious, how many of you checked out MiZ?  The few I've heard from so far only had good things to say.  Remember, with the Archive link you can stream it at your computer without downloading it... just hit play...
http://www.archive.org/details/miz2010- … eps.flac16

I have lots more MiZ Archive links I can share too, if anyone is interested... just sayin'... lol... tongue

I also wanted to point out that Mike Miz will be playing a FREE solo acoustic show TONIGHT (1/14) from 7-9 at Joe Squared in Baltimore, incase anybody in that area is interested.  Here's the venue website...
http://www.joesquared.com/

Then TOMORROW NIGHT (1/15) the full trio MiZ is playing at Bube's Brewery in Mt. Joy PA.  Show is at 10:00pm in Bottling Works, which is Bube's tavern/restaurant.  I'm sure there's a small cover, but I'm not sure how much... last time I'm thinking it was $5.  Anyway, I'm planning to be there... anybody want to join me?  I could even supply a ride from the Harrisburg area. wink
http://www.bubesbrewery.com/events.htm

Here's Mike's MySpace where you can listen to a bunch of songs and check out the rest of their tour schedule... this schedule includes his solo acoustic shows, the MiZ shows, the Jam Stampede shows (that's Dead/Garcia covers), and some other miscellaneous pairings...
http://www.myspace.com/mikemizwinski

I'll probably be bumping this thread every so often to point out certain shows... hope I don't get too annoying, lol. tongue  I just really think this guy has something special and that he's one to keep an eye on because he's going places! smile

Thanks for checking them out, Rus!  So far all the feedback I've gotten has been positive, but you're the first who's posted... thanks!  By the way NYC Skyline is one of the few listenable songs written about 9/11 I've heard... most are country songs, ugh... and this one is more than just "listenable", it's almost addictive, lol.  Mike has a way with lyrics. wink

At your chat recommendation, had a listen. Very nice band. Mellow, nice voice, good instrumentals. Wish they were local.

Glad you checked them out, thanks!  Right now they don't get out your way, but maybe someday!  They're currently on a big tour of the Northeast... well mostly PA and NYC, but between all Mike's bands he'll be hitting a few other states too.  Over the next several nights he'll be in Reading, Harrisburg (which unfortunately I'll have to miss, as I'll be away at another show), Williamsport, Lancaster, and Philly... incase anyone in those areas is interested.  If anyone wants to check out the full tour schedule or sample some music, here's the two MySpaces:

Again, here's the link I posted in my original post... it's an excellent recording, take a listen... it's hard for me to narrow down the "must-hear" tracks, because they're ALL good, lol... but since this is a blues forum, I'll say track #10, their cover of Red House... I always talk about Mike's songwriting and lyrical talents, but I probably don't mention enough, HE CAN PLAY SOME GUITAR!

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

After reading your post I was intrigued so listened to a bit while I worked to day in the office. As Rick said it was nice and mellow and as well as being an accomplished musician - clearly- he has a very nice way with the audience.

It's also an excellent recording.

I give a full listen through tomorrow but what I heard so far I liked. Thanks for the tip!

Very nice.  Is this your friend you speak of that does recordings?  If so I would love to get the links to other groups he does.  Brings back shades of college and listening to the Dead.  I was paired with a Dead Head to room with.  As a Black Sabbath fan we needed to set some ground rules.  So with that, we switched turns and I became a Dead fan.  Thanks for the link.

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

Thank you to Mike, Brack and Woofy for checking them out, and for posting! smile

And yes, that's my taper friend Keith Litzenberger... also known as wkl_taper, wklitz, Flying Gonz, Berry Garcia Recording... he has a reputation as a top-notch taper, has all the best equipment, and over 20 years of experience (and he's only 37!).  Most the links I post are his recordings, or maybe once in a while one of his taper friends that would be comparable quality.  He records a wide variety of bands... hundreds of Dead and Dead-related shows... but lots of other stuff too... Springsteen, KISS, Pearl Jam, etc... lots of jambands and local bands... and stuff you'd never guess, like Neil Diamond, Miley Cyrus, his buddy got Lady Gaga not long ago, lol... I think the goal is to get EVERYBODY at least once, lol.  Most of his stuff can be found on either Archive, etree, dimeadozen, tradersden, and a few others.  I can try to hook you up with links if there's anything special you're looking for.

Haha, you certainly promote them well Vik. Talking about dates,, should they ever come to the UK, I would love to catch them, haha, not sure if that's any time soon, but sure that in the future, they will make their way over here smile#

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

The other day I mentioned in the "snow" thread that I had made it out to a great show last weekend and I wanted to share the recording.  Well it wasn't a MiZ show, but Mike Miz was involved, so I figured it's a good excuse to bump this thread. wink   Plus I just really wanted to share this awesome recording and I didn't want to make a new thread for it.  Anyway, it was a bunch of guys from a bunch of bands (see the line-up below), playing tribute to Jerry Garcia's bluegrass roots, in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the release of the album Old And In The Way.  This was supposed to be a one-off thing, but it went so well they've decided to keep doing it (the same way Mike's Dead tribute Jam Stampede got started) and they seem to be going by the name Garcia Grass.

My taper friend Keith recently bought a 24-track recorder, which is awesome.  If you dug his other recordings, you really should check this out.  I will post both his soundboard/Schoeps matrix AND his multi-track recording of this show, for you to compare.  Remember, if you're not into downloading, you can just listen at your computer via the Archive links.  Enjoy! cool

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

I just got home a couple hours ago from a Mike Miz solo acoustic show at a little place about 5 or 10 minutes from me... so cool to get a show so close to home!  And I almost forgot about the gig too, until I happened to read about it in Thursday's paper.  It's all part of the Millennium Music Conference taking place all weekend at various locations throughout the Harrisburg area.  Three other solo artists played sets before Mike, and they all did a fine job and I enjoyed them all, but when Mike took the stage and started playing, there was a definite difference in the crowd's reaction... like I always say, he's got something special.  So cool watching people discover him and his music, stopping conversations to listen, and then smiling and nodding to each other.  It's a shame he was only able to play about a 45-minute set (the place closes early), but you could tell people liked what they heard.

I'm looking forward to catching the full trio MiZ next Sunday too, at the River Street Jazz Cafe near Wilkes-Barre.  They will be playing along with Cabinet (a bluegrass favorite of mine), Reggie Watson, and The Woody Browns Project, and I'm sure there will be a lot of co-jamming going on too.  It's a benefit for Haiti... $10 cover includes a 2-hour free food buffet, and all drinks are half price... not a bad deal!  Gonna be a fun night for sure.  I'll have a recording to share afterwards.

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

I don't know how many Phish fans we have here, but last night I went to see Mike Miz's Phish cover band, Trippin On Nothing, for the first time.  First off, let me say I've never really been a big Phish fan, so if you're not a fan (or don't know if you are or not), please don't let that stop you from checking out the recording I'll be posting later, because it was an amazing show ya'll really should hear.  This band really gives Mike a chance to show off his guitar skills... wow!  I mean there are plenty of fine guitarists out there, but when Mike is ripping solos and jamming away, I'm feeling every note, and you can tell he is too, and he makes it look so easy.

Also worth a mention... for this particular show they had John Morgan Kimock guesting on drums... he is the 20-21 year old son of guitarist Steve Kimock, whose name I know has come up on this forum various times in the past.  If anyone has seen Steve's most recent band, Crazy Engine, you've seen "Lil' John's" drumming... he's a monster!  I've seen him drum with various bands in the past, but for this show he was situated on the right side of the stage facing center stage, so I had a perfect profile view of his drumming all night (instead of the usual rear-stage-obscured-by-the-drumset view), and let me tell you the blur of his drumstick trails was mesmerizing!

Oh, and an interesting note:  This show took place at my favorite small venue for live music, the River Street Jazz Cafe in Plains PA (just outside Wilkes-Barre).  I just love the place... they get some really good bands in there, including local, regional and national acts.  It's a 2-hour drive for me, but I'm there about every week or two and have discovered so much good music there (MiZ, for example).  Not to mention the good food, friendly staff, decent prices, they mix a nice drink, etc... just an all-around cool place and always a good time.  Okay, that's my little River Street Jazz Cafe plug, lol.  But anyway, here's the interesting part... after last night's show I got to talking the man who books the talent in there (as well as head chef), Tom Moran, and it turns out he knows Joe Bonamassa, because he used to play there back in the day!  I wonder if Joe remembers the place?  Probably does, as every musician I've ever talked to who's ever played the Jazz always speaks fondly of the place... seems to be a favorite spot among bands as well as patrons.

Anyway, I encourage you all to check out last night's Trippin On Nothing show, which I'll be posting at link to as soon as it's uploaded.  Oh, and the reason I never posted the Haiti benefit show I mentioned last time is because Mike was losing his voice and it wasn't the best represenation of his vocals... still a terrific show though.  Last night his voice was back.

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

Hi Vikki,

I finally got around to checking out MiZ and agree he's pretty good.  I checked too my normal place to find hard to get music (iTunes) and there was only one song, "Time For Time", which I'd describe as singer/songwriter music.  I'd appreciate it to know where I could get some of his band's cds.  Excellent shout!

I didn't even recognize that song title, "Time For Time", and I'm kinda surprised that's the only one available on iTunes.  Apparently he doesn't play it much, but I did find it on a show I was at last year... it's track #27... this was a good show, even though they had a last-minute, unrehearsed drummer... this is an excellent soundboard/Schoeps matrix...
http://www.archive.org/details/miz2009- … sbd.flac16

I also just found "Time For Time" on Mike's MySpace, recorded live with Marco Benevento on keys (some may be familiar with that name)... very pretty, and sad... maybe that's why he doesn't play it much...
http://www.myspace.com/mikemizwinski

But to answer your questions... the only CD they currently have available is a 4-song EP which they sell at shows for $5.  The 4 titles are "New Morning Sky", "NYC Skyline", "Wink", and "Katie's Song"... all great songs, studio recorded.  If you click on Mike's MySpace link above and page about halfway down, you'll see where you can purchase the MP3s for $.99 per song from Nimbit.  I'll have to ask Mike if there's any other ways to buy his music.  And not to try to take away from his sales or anything, but you can also download his shows for free from Archive, etree, etc... no worries, Mike's all for it... he'd be honored I'm sure.  smile

Keith is processing last night's Trippin On Nothing show right now, trying to find a mix he's happy with... stay tuned... this is nothing like anything of his I've ever posted before... can hardly wait to hear it again myself!  cool

Re: MiZ - I need to share this band!

Still waiting for the Trippin On Nothing download link, but in the meantime I wanted to point out 2 things:

1.  That 8/28/09 show I linked to above (http://www.archive.org/details/miz2009- … sbd.flac16) is kinda cool because the 1st set & the encore (tracks 1-15 & 30) was Mike Miz solo acoustic, and the 2nd set (tracks 16-29) was the full electric trio MiZ... the best of both worlds.  Like I said before, it was a substitute drummer, but he did a good job, and it's a great recording.

2.  For anybody located in New York City, Mike is playing 2 shows there THIS WEEKEND.  Tonight (Sat) the full band MiZ hits the National Underground at 9:00pm.  Then tomorrow night (Sun) Mike will be playing solo acoustic at The Bitter End, along with Vicci Martinez who hails from the Northwest (I've seen her before, VERY good, sweet voice, definitely worth checking out), for singer-songwriter night.  Hope somebody out there reading this can check them out.
