Topic: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Just saw him for the first time live on sunday at the Boardwalk here in Sacramento and all I can say is. HOLY ****!!! This guy is simply amazing. Any body else seen this guy live? I've heard about him of course, he's a bit of a legend, but his discography isn't really my forte. Lets just say it isn't blues rock by any stretch of the imagination. Im going to see Joe at the Crest Theatre when he comes to town in March, and im sure he will blow me away too. I just had to throw some love out to Steve though, he is going to be in Petaluma and then SF next so if anybody can go out and support this guy I HIGHLY recomend it. He is also a really nice guy, he came out afterwords and signed my ibanez RG and a CD I had of him with the Dixie Dregs. Class Act, go see him!

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

I have known of Steve Morse for some time, and have one of his albums, "Prime Cuts"

As a fan of both YES, and RUSH, i enjoyed the tracks, "The Clap" and " La Villa Strangiato"

And yes I agree, a superb guitarist!

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Im not fimiliar with that CD but I will have to check it out. He impressed the hell out of me. I know people say this alot about whoever there excited about, but I really think he is the most technically accomplished electric guitar player out there. It would be a toss up between him and Satriani in my mind. Wish I appreciated his style of music more, but his playing alone is worth the price of admission, the CD's dont even come close to capturing this guy.

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Ah Steve Morse. Old fluid fingers himself.Live? yes a couple of times but only with Purple of course. I mean, lots of old fans harp on about Ritchie Blackmore etc etc, but the truth is Ritchie could be a pain, didn't want to do it anymore and...sorry if this upsets anyone IMHO Morse is the superior guitarist.

Over his years with Purple (its about 15 or more isn't it?) he has worked at playing the classics and adding a twist, to the extent that I find he has made them his own but in a very respectful way. He is a staggeringly good guitarist, another who makes it seemingly effortless at time, but also a team player.

Never seen him doing just the instrumental stuff but in a band setting he lets the song come through I find. The reviews of his solo output are often quite cruel but instrumental albums are bound to be just a bit self indulgent are'nt they? Heard some of his stuff when he is on the jazzy/fusion trail and its pretty spectacular. He is another stellar talent for sure.

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Yes Live! and at quite a small venue (a bar in Sacramento!) I was 2 ft away from the mains, and about 3-4 ft away from Mr. Morse. I will never forget the expirience of seeing such a legend so close. Yes I have seen his stuff with deep purple and you can really hear his touch on the songs. Very tastefully done though as to not kill the original vibe of deap purple. Blackmore is great, can't argue otherwise, but technically Morse is on another planet than blackmore. AND I AM NOT TALKING SHRED! It goes way beyond that.
My friend was in the front row at a deep purple concert with Morse, and he couldn't hear right for 2 days following the concerts LOL, he was going to go to the doctor because he was worried but then his hearing started gradually returning to normal.

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Oh ya one other thing, my friend who had seen and talked to him before said to him after the show "hey steve, I brought my friend Brandon here, so he could see the greatest guitar player in the world!" And steve replied "Oh but you brought him here instead?" LOL he is super humble and nice, unlike the Bass player Dave Larue, who was cockey as hell lol but he was cool to talk to as well. Ok I promise I am done raving now...

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Hey Brandon, a buddy of mine is a personal friend of Steve's from back in the Dixie Dreggs days and we're on the guest list tonight @ The Mystic in Petaluma. I've never seen Steve before and can't wait. We're headin' up there early to hang out with Steve before the show. I'll give you some feedback tomorrow. Gotta get a move on.

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Joe was putting it mildly, phenomanal was more like it. Got to meet him before the show, but pretty much listened to him and my buddy Jeff catch up on what's up since they saw each other a year or so ago. Steve gave me a good look at his custom made Musicman that he was limbering up on the whole time we were visiting. It's one whack axe. A great encounter with a very laid back unpretentious guy. On the way out I was engaged by a half dozen or more people slack jawed proclaiming, WOW! did you believe that guy? To sum it up I'd say that was a precision technical guitar clinic. We spent most of the show sitting next to the sound board soaking up those tones like a sponge. I also learned that Steve has been voted best guitarist by Guitar Player so many times that they retired him from the rest of the competition to give the other guys a chance.

Steve gave you some high praise as well JB when I dropped your name during our visit. You're right he is a "good bloke". I think hangin' around those Brits in the studio is startin' to wear off on your vocabulary mate. You're not leavin' SoCal for London anytime soon are ya? LOL!

I'm sure there will be more to come.

Still a great live band and well worth catching live

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

OH YES - he's one of the BEST!! Seen him in May 1984 for the first time with a project called THE NEW ACOUSTIC GUITAR TRIO
(with Richard Thompson and David Lindley), five years later with KANSAS and in the last 15 years a few times with DEEP PURPLE. His solo's were amazing!!!

Re: STEVE MORSE! OMG!

Steve kicked some major A$$ on Friday Night will visiting here in Orlando at HOB.

He joined Warren Haynes and the Band for about 4 tunes.
It was epic watching the expression on Warren's face as he watched Steve wail, and then Warren seemed to say, what the hell you think about this lick!

Danny and Matt were providing a great background for the Boys to play.
Jorgen was getting in on the guitar slingin as well.

I think the extended Broke Down on the Brazo's, that ended the first set was a new high for me.

May I suggest getting this Muletrack from Jan. 22nd from Mule.net?
