Topic: It is with profound sadness...

...that I share with you all the passing of Garth Close.

In an email received this morning from his sister Leslie,

Stu, This E Mail was requested by Garth to notify you of his passing. Garth died on Dec. 31st of cancer.

Following your name on his list of people to notify was written "notify Joe Bonamassa". I am not sure if we (Leslie his sister and Jim her husband) are to notify Joe Bonamassa or if that was something he wanted you to do. If possible could you do that for us as we really would have no idea where to begin.

Thank you for any help you can give us on Garths behalf.

Remembering Garth, Leslie and Jim Davis

Please join me in a moment of silence for our fallen friend, and feel free to share any <G> stories you might have here. I have forwarded Leslie's email to Joe, along with some insights as to how much work Garth did promoting him during the early Street Team days. Garth was a good man, and a good freind.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

My condolences to Garth's loved ones.

Thanks for that excerpt, Jane. That's one hell of a story.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

I had the honor & pleasure of meeting Garth at an Omaha show.  I have a picture of him that I will post later (at work now).  He was a very energetic person and I will never forget his kindness....he had a special Joe sticker for me and also when I was going into the hospital he had printed off all the Forum messages to me from all of you and sent them to me...I was overwhelmed with his thoughtfulness after meeting him one time......He was definitely a Joe Bonamassa fan thru & thru.......my sympathy and heartfelt condolences to his family. God Speed Garth!

Re: It is with profound sadness...

This is shocking and horrible news.  I'm sitting here stunned.

Garth was (naturally) at the very first Joe show I attended--the Ranch Bowl, in March of 2003.  I remember wondering who that guy was standing right up front, camera in hand.

I didn't get to meet him at that time, but when I sent my first post to the old message board, announcing that I'd been totally blown away by Joe, Garth was one of the first responders.  We formally met a couple of months later, at the Indigenous Jam.  Then, a few months after that, I met up with him again at the Music Box show.  He introduced me to Joe that night--and Joe, wonder of wonders, recognized my name from my message board posts.  It was kind of magical.

I've never been to an Omaha-area show without Garth.

And now, on the very same day I learn that Joe is returning to the Big O, right after I had purchased my tickets and had begun looking forward to seeing Garth again, I learn . . . this.

Joe's appearance in May will definitely be bittersweet for me.  There will be a gaping hole where Garth should be.

Farewell, <G>, my friend.  We will miss you something awful.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

Terrible news. I never had the pleasure to meet Garth in person, but I enjoyed his posts here and certainly considered him a big part of our forum family.
My most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

I'm so sorry to hear about this loss.  Garth was a very devoted fan and street team member and such a nice guy.  He was one of the first people I became friends with here back in February '03 when I first got on board.  We exchanged pics (his were fabulous), stories, live shows, and memorabilia of both Joe's and other bands, and I had the good fortune to sit next to him at a Joe show in November '03 at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland when he took a trip there.  We remained in sporadic contact and continued our exhanges, which were always welcome and always funny.  One time on the Tuesday chat we were talking about Lake Erie and he said that his dad was from Cleveland and once told him that Lake Erie was so polluted that you could see [excrement] floating ashore.  A few weeks later I took the kids to a sparkling clear Lake Erie beach and while I was there I took a stick to the sand and wrote, "Look Garth!  No [excrement]!" and later sent him the shot; we got a lot of mileage out of that one wink

As it generally does for just about all of us here, Joe's music facilitated a friendship beyond music and into the realm of all that makes us human.  As much as I'm saddened to have lost this friend, I'm happy and thankful to have had him as a friend, and I'm also grateful to Joe & his music for making it happen in this instance and countless others, for me and for many.

My most sincere condolences to <G>'s family on their loss, and to all those here, too.  May he rest in peace.

Wow, that is really shocking and sad news.  <G>'s posts were always spot on and with great insight, he was one of the "old timers" on the forum and he will sorely be missed.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

This is such sad news, G was a big part of the early forum days and was a true JB fan and everyone that met him said he was a lovely fun guy
That post is so deep and heartwarming and a forum masterpiece and that photo is surely one of Joe's most well known photo's worldwide (maybe that can be used in "Black Rock" ....) Kudos to Garth and everything he brought here and everyone he met.

This is terrible news. I too had never met Garth and only knew him by "G" his forum name, but his posts showed clearly how very good of a man he was. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

Very very sad news.
I remember G from my beginning at the old forum very well, he was one of the first to welcome me.
Such a loss for his beloved and for the Bonamassacommunity. He really was a nice man who knew a lot about blues.

My you rest in peace Garth.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

Thank you Stu for letting us know. I never met him but he was a special guy. I often missed his contributions here recently. I had no idea what he was going through. We know now. The Bonamassa family grieves his loss.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

Greetings, Bonamassa fans and Garth’s friends;

With a heavy heart, I write on behalf of Garth’s family to thank you for your kind words in this difficult time. We are grateful for the opportunity to read your memories of G shared through a mutual love of music.

Like many of you, some of my most cherished memories of Unkl G centered on the blues. Yesterday I came across a VHS he had made for me many moons ago of live Indigenous performances. I can remember later seeing them at a bar in North Dakota during a howling blizzard, and then writing Garth about the show. I recall his excitement hearing that I was seeing Walter Trout in Fargo upon his recommendation, and later his satisfaction when I reported that I was sufficiently blown away. I also recall my dad calling to talk about the incredible Clapton show he and Garth caught in Omaha. But mostly I remember all the years of Saturday in the Park in Sioux City. Beer, food, blues…and of course, Garth. This is the Garth that is seared in my memory, and I recall him fondly through the tears.

As those of you who knew him know, Garth was a humble, laid back guy. However, he was so proud and honored that he was able to contribute a piece of his art to Joe’s album, Blues Deluxe. Garth was in awe of Joe’s music and it meant so very much to him to be a part of it. His ability to capture the passion, power, and pain of music, one frame at a time, was truly a gift. I am grateful that his photographic legacy lives on so that we may continue to see his life through his eyes.

Garth succumbed to carcinoid cancer of the pancreas and liver. He had asked that in lieu of flowers, donations in his honor be made to the Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins. http://www.path.jhu.edu/pancreas/Support.php

We want you to know that in Garth’s last days, his favorite albums, including Joe’s, were a constant comfort to him in the hospital as he prepared to leave us. We know he was listening and smiling as the sound of Joe’s guitar, among others, played him out.

Sincerely,
Mark Davis

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Garth and his family.

As many have stated, Garth was one of the bright spots from the early days of Joe Fandom....and the original forum.

One of my favority pictures taken by the band when they used to take pics of the crowd at shows -- was one of Garth holding a sign in the crowd.....it may be still on this site somewhere.

We have and will miss him.

Re: It is with profound sadness...

Garth was like a blood brother to me. We met on this site and shared music and so much more over the last 6 years. I know that with music and phone calls I helped to make the last 7 months a little easier for him. The world has lost a rare human being with Garth's passing. His passion for music and photography will be missed. Remember Garth every time you listen to Joe as he was one of Joe's biggest fans. I know he was honored to have one of his photographs in the Blues Deluxe  CD. Farewell my brother.  Always know you will never be forgetton by all those you touched during your lifetime.  My thoughts and prayers go out to Garth's family and friends in this  time of sorrow.

<G>  Rest in Peace
