Re: top wrapping

cool, yea i learned that trick from the les paul forum, so i dont want to take all the credit, but i think its more than fair to share those tips with guitar players smile

its all a matter of principle...

Re: top wrapping

Ya, thanks again (and thanks to the guys in the Les Paul forum)

A new package of strings is waiting to get in touch with the old ball ends;)

What strings do you use RamiLP?
I use Ernie Ball 12-56 (not coated) in Standard E-tuning.

Re: top wrapping

i switch string brands alot, but i always stick with pure nickle strings as much as possible, but my favorites so far are the following

Snake oil brand strings - best strings i used, too bad they are expensive and PITA to get sometimes, because they are custom made strings and aren't a big company, 1ts a one man operated Business. but they are the best sounding and most long lasting strings that i have ever used, and they are Round core as well. so i go to 2nd best

DR pure nickle - awesome strings, but they tend to have alot of dead strings in the packages more than other brands, so its always to by a few packs and stock up in case a new dead string appears, it mostly happens on the wound strings, possible due to the round core. so we go to my 3rd favorite set

D'addario Pure nickle sets - these are new strings they come in the grey pack, they are awesome, as well, they last a good while but they tend to sound a bit warmer than other brands, i think they make a very good jazz music type string. so brings me my 4th favorite.

Ernie ball pure nickle strings - they are good sounding, i tend to like them a bit more than the D'addarios, and they are the cheapest set out off all, only thing is that they tend to not last a very long time, the max they stay on my guitar is about 2weeks. i like the D'addrios more for they longer life, and string feel, but the ernie balls beat them in price and tone. so i guess they are equal to me, which is why i still use both but slap them on the guitar when i feel like a little change.

I tend to use .009" gauge strings on my les paul, but i have been thinking of doing to 10's or even 11's lately, but i have been holding back because i just stocked up on .009" strings(i have like 14packs still) and also i have the guitar set 9's right now, if i need to go bigger gauge im gonna have to get the nut worked a bit to accept thicker strings and have it reset up again. im just holding off because i don't feel like spending the money

But i use 10's or 11's on my acoustic, and i also have a Taylor T5 custom that is always strung up with 11 guage electric guitar strings, and playing it with 11's is pretty easy i find.

its all a matter of principle...

Re: top wrapping

I got used to the 12s pretty quick.
I like the feeling of thicker strings.

Usually I change strings every 2-3 weeks. And I always clean them with a cloth (piece of an old t-shirt) after I played guitar.

I think I'll put new strings on on monday or tuesday. Then I can report about the two-ball-technique-experience.

Re: top wrapping

Wow you change out a lot! 2 to 3 weeks, its more like 2 to 3 months for me.  I guess I just don't hear the drop off in tone like you do.

Re: top wrapping

it also depends on how much you play, and how your body sweats and how acidic is your sweat, my7 average set is about 4 weeks, sometimes less sometimes more, depends on how much i actually play the guitar, i've had sets of strings that i went through in 3-4 days. and i've had sets that stay 2-3 months on the guitar.

its all a matter of principle...

Re: top wrapping

I'm an amature for sure but I've been playing for 10 years.  I don't play every day but I would say about 5 times a week 2 to 5 hours at a time if I got the time.  I'm in a local band so I do play a lot.  I can tell you my palms don't sweat like most people I know.  Some people play guitar for 5 minutes and have to wipe their hands off but me I can play wide open forever and not show a sign of sweating hands.  I never wipe off my strings either.  Most of the time when I change a string is when I break one, then I'll change them all.

Re: top wrapping

If one string breaks i'll change them all too.
I change my strings every 2-3 weeks because I like the sound of fresh strings.

The set of strings I'm using right now is the set which I started top wrapping. And I can say I like it. And with the two-ball-end thing it'll be even better.

I tired it both ways and never really had too many problems.  I like it better straight through I think because my LP buzzed a bit more when top wrapping.  But since I saw Bonamassa back in October last year with a Bigsby on his 58' reissue thats what I've moved to.  All my friends say its wild to hear a Les paul wabble like it does!

Wabble ???  hmm

Whass that then ??

Not related to the topic but I love the different terms we use like "wabble" (I knew right off what AD3THREE meant but never heard anyone decribe it like that).

I always call palm muting the "chunk a chunk a" sound. Now its a common decription with the guys I jam with.
