Topic: Photos from Southampton Guildhall

Here's a slideshow of my pics from the show last night.  The gorgeous lighting made photography a joy in the pit, and I hope you enjoy them.

Watch that silver suit shine! cool

I can't see many photos from this tour beating these...

It's like an advertisement for a new dvd, haha!

Thanks so much.

David.

Marty,
Thanks so much for posting these so quickly.  Amazing photos.  The lighting was brilliant and you have captured some stunning shots.  Love the suit Joe.

Marty, stunning shots. Do tell what gear you were using and what shop work you did, if any? Wonderful!

Re: Photos from Southampton Guildhall

Thanks for the commenst guys.  Geoff, I use a Canon 5D with a couple of lenses – 28-135 for the wide angle shots and 70-200 for the close-ups.  The nice thing about the 5D is that it handles high ISO quite well (ie prevents the images from becoming too grainy) which makes it good for concert photography.  It’s quite old now though, and I think some of the more modern SLRs are even better in low light.

In terms of post processing, I load everything into Adobe Lightroom, and then play with the different presets until I find one that I think complements the image.  Sometimes the image is fine as it is, sometimes it looks better in black and white, or blue toned or sepia (my purely subjective opinion).  One particular treatment I like is cold tone, where all the blue and green tones are boosted a little but the reds, oranges and browns are suppressed (reduced almost to black and white).  It doesn’t work with every image but occasionally it produces a really nice effect.  I might then fine tune the contrast etc until I'm happy with the final result.

Re: Photos from Southampton Guildhall

Great photos Marty. I especially like the black and white and sepia ones.

Wow that suit is really trying to steal the limelight! big_smile.....luckily Joe still shines brighter!

Re: Photos from Southampton Guildhall

I agree with Marty the lighting was great on Tuesday at Southampton - much better than at Cardiff in April.

Links to my own more humble efforts are below - but I must say I am very pleased with them. big_smile

Re: Photos from Southampton Guildhall

Whoa Marty!  You've truly excelled yourself there- the lightshow really made such a difference to this set- I recall the gigs at the Cheese & Grain where Joe stood at the front of the stage and was plunged into total darkness! ;-) No chance at this show- especially with that suit! Great job mate- I hope Joe's publicity team take note!!! ;-)))

This don't look like no express way to me...

Very, very impressive.
Joe should use you as his official photographer.

What equipment do you use??

Lester..

Thanks. I would love to do that.  I've already worked in an official capacity with bands like Journey, Thunder, JSS, Tyketto and the Illegal Eagles, covering multiple shows on their tours, and I would love to capture Joe on tour.  I think I could do far better than these images without the pressure of just being able to shoot the first three songs.

Having said that I'm grateful for the chance to shoot anything of Joe, and I'll keep coming back to do the odd show here and there.

Marty

PS  I think I covered the equipment question earlier on in this thread.

Re: Photos from Southampton Guildhall

great pictures Marty, - if only the world still sold 12 inch vinyl on mass, - there are some photos here that would look superb on the cover of a large format album, - remember the days of putting on one side of a vinyl LP and sitting down studying every detail of the album cover? Happy days!
