Topic: HOB Hollywood

Great, but different show for sure. First it was as always a pleasure to hang out w/ my Bonabud Libby and finally get to meet her hubby Steve and Danny too. The show opened with Pete Anderson with a rousing set of his own style of blues, this guy can do it all, helluva player, producer, grammy winner and former driving force behind Dwight Yoakam. Dwight's career has suffered since parting ways with Pete for sure. The guitar comp. started and much to our pleasure the judges sat right in front of us. The judges were Kenny Wayne Shepard, Elliot Easton(The Cars& Creedence), Jimmy Vivino(Conan's band director), Hubert Sumlin(sittin' right in front of me), and Steve Lukather. The 5 finalists were all outstanding, but when Kirby Kelly, the oldest of the bunch played his dual slide style(one on his index finger & one on his ring finger) the judges were highly amused. I looked over Jimmy, Hubert, & Steve's shoulders and saw nothing but 9's & 10''s on their ballots, way higher than the previous two guys and knew who the winner was gonna be. Then Joe came on and not to far into his set started bringing out, as Joe called it, a cavalcade of stars to sit in. First was Lukather, then Jimmy and Hubert came on along with Elliot, and they closed out with Glenn Hughes. Glenn was interesting showing off his still dynamic pipes and playing style on bass that was pure Spinal Tap imagery. The highlight for me was enjoying my girlfriends Bonabaptism even though we didn't get a full dose of Joe, but she got to meet JB, Rick, and Bogie earlier in the afternoon, but you get Carmine in Hollywood and he's about impossible to nail down. As always Dave, Aaron, and Warren were takin' care of business as well as sharin' the love. I also sent Jimmy and Hubert home with a JB pick as a souvenir from the event. I offered one to Steve Lukather, but he said thanks, but I already have a few. Can't wait for March 12 to come around.

I know that Guitar Cneter video taped the KOB portionl, but did they video Joe too?
Thanks for the info, wish I could have made it.

Re: HOB Hollywood

Thanks J Dawg.  A good time with my good time friends! I KNOW where I belong...Dagnabbit!  Steve is a whole lotta fun.
Libby's Steve I refer to presently. Apologies to Lib & Steve J Dawg, Danny, Joe & Co. et al, duty called, so I was dootyeous.  So was my attitude! lol
Dawg, The Magic Kingdom & A Magical King of the Bluesdom event.  What  a life! That ride sounds fantasy non-static.  It means I am also overdue for a Disney excursion.  Dozens of Disney trips and I haven't done that one yet.  It wasn't there last time.
I was pulling for Josh Gooch as he's from the stompin' ground, and he IS the kid I was privileged and honored to introduce to Joe last year before his show at the Galaxy in Santa Ana.  No worries, this year he's already been doing some recording, a Bonnie Bramlett project earlier and a group called Highly Kind.  Paper here had him in the Arts section Sunday.

Steve's playing looked like a lotta fun. Lukather's Luthieriasm I refer to presently.

Re: HOB Hollywood

Just a couple of tidbits to add....... a few judges John didn't list..... Editor-in-Chief of Guitar World magazine Brad Tolinski, and Dweezil Zappa...... there were a few more, but I didn't catch everyone's name.  Also joining Joe on stage that night was young Tyler Dow Bryant who is featured in "Rock Prophecies", an excellent, award winning film about the life of legendary rock photographer, Robert M. Knight.

Keith posted a great story on his website and it includes five of my videos.  Here's the link to that article:

I shot most of the night - captured much of the competition, and all of Joe's show, with the exception of 'So It's Like That'.  I've posted 6 videos from that night on my Youtube channel, and listed those that I've uploaded below.  I also have the winner, Kirby Kelley's performance and Joe's announcement of the winner on my channel.  Here's the link:

..... and here's the set list:

Joe, Carmine, Bogie, and Rick only -
The Ballad of John Henry
So It's Like That (no video shot)
So Many Roads

w/Steve Lukather -
Further on Up the Road (video posted)
Great Flood

w/Jimmy Vivino, Hubert Sumlin and Tyler Bryant -
Your Funeral My Trial
Reconsider Baby (video posted)

Jimmy Vivino and Elliot Easton -
Had to Cry Today
Blues Deluxe

w/Glenn Hughes (with Joe and Bogie only)
Mistreated  (video posted)
Medusa (video posted)

It was a SPECTACULAR night and really fun to see John and Danny, as always.  smile  I'll get the rest of the show posted eventually, and I shot the entire show the night before at the Coach House too.  Stay tuned.  Enjoy.  wink

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-
