Topic: My New Purchase

Well after days of searching for the next member of the family, I just completed a transaction on this beauty....Brand New Gibson Les Paul 1958 Reissue....

http://www.route66classicguitars.com/58583.html

I know I am taking a chance on buying a guitar without playing it but I couldn't pass up the sweet deal (under $3k including over night shipping) and the stats on the guitar works for me...

I have smaller hands so at first I was hesitant to get a '58 but his is the info on her...

9 pounds 4 ounces
Neck measurements:
1st fret .875"
12th fret .967"

a slightly smaller medium sized neck that is thinner than most '59's that I have tried/looked at.

Time to sell my 2007 Fender American Deluxe Strat...any takers??? LOL

Now I need a good vintage amp to play her through and I am ready to go!!!!

Re: My New Purchase

That is a beautiful color. I have a R8 Gloss in Ice Tea.  Its a lot lighter than that one. That damn near the best color I've ever seen. Great Buy man, I am envious.

Re: My New Purchase

Here is what Jim at Route 66 said about the tone.....

"Well, I just spent about 40 minutes playing the Bourbon Burst and here are my impressions. First of all, my initial impression of any guitar begins acoustically. So, I start by tuning her up. What I am looking for here is acoustic resonance. On this guitar I could clearly feel the acoustic resonance in the neck, headstock and even in the bout against my rib. This level of resonance typically translates into increased sustain and performance when plugged in. The acoustic clarity is also quite impressive. The acoustic projection is very pleasing with a very nice "bloom" or "blossoming" to the effect. So, the acoustic summary is; Above average acoustic resonance with excellant clarity and projection. Now, let's plug her in. I am going to play thru my 1967 Ampeg Gemini II amp. My first set is pretty clean with a little bit of reverb and that's all. Very, very warm tone with quite a bit of depth . The sound is quite rich with a great deal of presence and an airy wafting. Exploring the range of the guitar, I find she has a huge usable range. I mean you can go all the way into the bottom end without getting muddy, straight into the upper range without shattering and you can live in the mid range! Play is very easy with the guitar being quite responsive to the lightest touch and very well balanced. Voicing is very articulate with clean phrasing. Okay now, let's push her and see what happens. A lot of guitars will give up their tone when pushed so, once you crank them up the guitar breaks down and you wind up sounding like a jimmy Page wannabe in a garage band, playing a Teisco. Anyway, I used a pedal to overdrive the signal and wow! Huge presence, and BIG sound!! Now, one step further with some compression added. What a monster. Kind of like playing a Hammond B3 with strings. Incredible sustain, power and retains tonal integrity throughout the entire power curve. So, here is my bottom-line. A great blues/jazz guitar with a great deal of warmth and tone. Very rich with a big sound and big presence. Capable of transitioning into a classic rock guitar with the power and clarity to back it up! All in all, this is one of the better ones and will be sure to keep up with you no matter what you ask of her! Thanks and let me know if you have any other questions, jim"

This is only my opinion so, please take it for what it is worth smile)

Re: My New Purchase

Congrats bro!  You just made the last LP purchase you'll likely ever need to make!  Those custom shop Les Pauls are so consistantly good that I know it will rock.  They are the only Gibsons that I would ever buy before trying.  The '58 neck is not bad at all, alot of wood for heavy bending but not so fat that you can't shred on it.  Treat her right and you'll be rewarded with the tone of the gods! cool

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: My New Purchase

It is a beauty and I agree with Stratpaulguy86 that a custom shop LP is THE guitar. Congratulations and enjoy.

Re: My New Purchase

I played my new 58 last night for hours...she sounded great...the tonal variaties were amazing even on my Ac15.   have band practice tonight so I can't wait to hear her with them.  My lead guitar player has a R9 so this should be fun!!!

I'll let you know what I think but the honeymoon will last a long long time!!!  LOL

Any thoughts on a vintage combo amp to go with the 58?

I'd love something in the Marshall line.  Is there a discountinued Marshall tube combo amp in the 20 to 40 watt range?  The bluesbreaker or the 1974x are high on the list....

Congrats on your new grab- Good price too.

Here's the thing on the 1974- I think I read that you have a AC15. The '74 is a great amp but it is an EL84 tube compliment  which will have some similarities (tonally) to your Vox. I have the 2061 which I love with a LP (or strat or tele) which is the same circuit as the 1974x. To get a feel for this amp you should certainly play it first unlike your LP which you can feel pretty darn confident about without even playing it. I actually use my 2061 for my country gigs as it has great spank with my tele. Ultra articulate.

If You want killer Gibbons style grind and ultra warm cleans - Look at the Dr. Z28 or a top end BF DR clone you can look here. The 6V6 tube and the Les Paul is pretty insane and alot of amp builders are starting to build around this tube set as this has been a relatively unexplored tonal area.

Just some thoughts on some good low watt killers. My feeling with any amp (not so much guitar) is that they need to be cranked to hear all the overtones and behavior when the OT is doing it's thing. You likely do this so ignore me if this is obvious.

I got invited by a local retailer to come "debut" the Bad Cat 15 watt (forget at this point) Class A blah blah only to show up and have to play it at room volume. Later for you!!! Say what you will about GC and corporate evil but they will let you take your set up or demo set up and dime it which I like.

Good searching!!

Re: My New Purchase

I agree with the Z-28 suggestion, killer amps and affordable for a PTP boutique amp.  A Bluesbreaker combo would likely fit what you are looking for nicely.  I would also check out an old Silverface Princeton, Deluxe Reverb, or Vibrolux.  Avoid the master volume models if you can and you'll get an amazing amplifier.  The Silverface amps are cheaper than Blackface, still PTP wired, and if you get an early one ('68-'70) you'll be getting an amp that is almost identical to the Blackface models.  A heck of a lot closer than the current reissues IMO.

Re: My New Purchase

I think that the Mesa Boogie Lonestar Classic would be worth trying out as well. The 10/50/100 watt switching is cool as is the choice of tube or diode rectification. Great reverb as well. Added bonus of muscle-building capability for whoever moves it!

Re: My New Purchase

If your strat is still for sale, you can put it in the Marketplace section of the JB forum... ?   hmm
