Topic: Paul Kossoff

I have been a fan of Free for many, many years. Lately, I have been tracking down everything I can find on Paul Kossoff. I found a DVD called "Free Forever" and I bought the Back Street Crawler album.

I see that he played a few different Les Pauls, and in one video, a Stratocaster. From what I can find on the internet, at least one Paul was a '59; a gift from Eric Clapton.

Anyone know anything about his main LP, the one that looks very worn? Also, if you know of any other Free or Kossoff video material; please share

As you've asked I will dig them all out later. I think I have his first (sort of) solo venture which was with Simon Kirke, Tetsu on Bass and 'Rabbit' Bundrick on keys. There are some excellent tracks on there. Its a very underrated album and worth getting. You've found Back Street Crawler which is a bit patchy but stands the test of time well with some stand out tracks like 'Molten Gold'.

I have the "Band Plays on" by BSC and I find this also a good album. The other group memebers were trying to keep PK on the straight and narrow at the time and he produces some good work in a tight band format once again. Terry Slesser on vocals was a guiding light here and if they could have got him cleaned up completely this band and PK could have had a real future, which the album '2nd Street' reinforced I always thought.

The only other (solo) album I have is an early double compilation memorial album 'Koss' which features his solo and work with Free and a long well written bio but there are many others available now.

Thanks for the elbow jog. I shall spin 'Koss' this evening and remember one of the great lost talents.

There was a compilation album called 'Koss' which I had on vinyl.
Not sure if it is still available.

Re: Paul Kossoff

Koss was certainly one of my favourite guitarists and very under-rated, IMO.

As I said on another thread, if you want to dig a little deeper, the 5 CD box set 'Songs Of Yesterday' contains many alternate takes and the book 'Heavy Load' by Dave Clayton and Todd Smith is worth reading. They're both pricey but rewarding.

Re: Paul Kossoff

The Free Live at the BBC dvd is well worth a look - I think his best stuff was with Free - his solo albums didn't live up to expectation, but albums like Fire & Water with tracks like Alright Now and Mr Big were superb..........that album is probably a top ten album of that era.....I think the Paul Rodgers/Andy Frazer written songs were just great...........

Re: Paul Kossoff

I had the pleasure of seeing Free live at Sheffield University.
What a night for a young person still at school !

Sadly missed.

Re: Paul Kossoff

Thanks for the suggestions.

No doubt; Paul was a soulfull player with one of the best vibrato's I have ever heard. I am learning "Ride on a Pony" right now and I just love the song's groove.

I think he should be required listening for any guitar student.

Re: Paul Kossoff

I love Free and Kosoff. If you haven't checked out "Time Away" I would recommend that highly.
