Re: John Mayer- new song

I like it. The thing about John is that he's always going off in different directions. I'm very interested to hear this album.

Re: John Mayer- new song

eek. I say he can't get stoned.

Don't get me wrong... I love John Mayer music. Lyrics about getting stoned and/or high is so roll
That said, it took me a WHILE to like the high lyric in Sloe Gin. Clapton's cocaine... etc. Just don't enjoy making light of drugs. Call me a square lol I'll listen to the songs, but I won't say they are amazing or cover them in tribute to the artist. I guess the only negative nancy'ing I'll do about it is right here. wink

The song "Who Says" sounds like John Mayer took a concept from Ben Harper's "burn one down" trying give it a Jack Johnson feel with the riffs off Mayer's "Stop This Train." For my money, I was expecting a little more from John Mayer. I think he has more talent than this song let on, but it will line his pockets quite nicely... which is the name of the game in commercial music.

This 2006 remark of his was obviously a lie "I may never win a Grammy again, I may never sell a million records again, but the world will get where I’m coming from.” Mayer added, “I’m not afraid to lose it all.” I was really hoping he was illuding to dedicating himself to more blues music.... oh well.

Then again, we haven't heard the whole album, so who knows what the rest of it sounds like. I do agree with you Nic, he's capable of a lot more, but the song is catchy. I do hope this isn't the whole album, and something tells me it is not.

I agree. The album as a whole might be a lot different.

It is a catchy song, but honestly it could have used better lyrics. Maybe it will grow on me.

Ahhh....the trappings of  fame.  I somewhat agree with all the above posts - don't like the drug reference and yes he's borrowing heavily from "Stop This Train".  That said, I still found the video interesting cause he's interesting.  The new album, I'm sure, will be seriously discussed among his fans and non-fans and I'm hoping it's another winner.  The release though of this song makes me think otherwise.

With you there Curby.
May surprise you I've got no Mayer CD's or downloads - I've listened to lots on the interweb and yes he's a fine guitarist and he's done some good stuff but I just find it hard to take to him. There seems to be a conflict in what he's about - the music or the dollar - and that shows through in his musical output. If he believes fully in what he's doing, then good luck to him. Probably didn't help getting mixed up wth somebody famous.

And Nic.......... Whose "Cocaine"?

I know it was pretty appropriate for EC to cover at the time, but give JJ some credit wink

Re: John Mayer- new song

I like John Mayer... Great guitarist, even better songwriter. Slips in and out of jazz and blues and great pop with ease, fantastic voice too.

But god... his attitude winds me up something chronic. I've got a live dvd of his that has little clips of him talking inbetween songs and that. By the end of the disc...everytime....without fail... I want to punch a baby seal right in the face.

Re: John Mayer- new song

everyone's comments I totally agree.

JJ doing Cocaine I never had a problem with big_smile
did that empower or discourage use of cocaine? I'll have to check the lyrics.

to those who have not purchased Mayer music, I do encourage at least checking out John Mayer Trio. Good blues if you can ignore the pop past. Steve Jordan was his drummer, and he was the drummer in Cadillac Records for Muddy Water and/or Howlin Wolf. Had a big say in how things sounded on the movie.

Re: John Mayer- new song

He just doesn't have an edge.

I don't like that "eases from place to place" sort of thing going on.

I find it generally quite boring and even the guitarist for Pink seems pretty kickass in comparison.

He ticks all the boxes, but I want the boxes blown up and torn apart. I'd rather he stay in the studio...

Re: John Mayer- new song

I just got into John Mayer, thanks to my Southern Belle who lives in Alabama ! smile  and who calls me 'Sugar' !!

Re: John Mayer- new song

On the whole I like John Mayer and think he has alot to offer, yet this song does not offer that much.. hope for better on the new album, he's had long enough to make it. Joe's done about three albums and full tours in that time!

He be's a pop phenom...cougar bait.  Steve Jordan and Pino the Welsh italian might rub some soul into him.  Ton's of talent.  Full of himself.  If he needs to meet someone with an ego...well I am a legend in my own mind.

Maybe I can help find him. smile

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: John Mayer- new song

I am not the biggest fan of this new single, but I have heard some samples from the new album Battle Studies, which will be out in November, and there will be some killer grooves on it. I can't wait!

I couldn't find Jamey's music for sale - is he a regional artist?  I really like his songs.  I'll take hope in your comments about Mayer's new album.
