Topic: Devon Allman at the Coach House 8/24

My. Lord. What a show!!

My mind is going blank at how entirely cool this night was...

Thanks to the graces of Mizz(us) Libby I was able to attend the most energetic and electrifying show I've been to in a very long time. There were two openers: a man named Hans David Rearick (he was very sure we knew his name!), an exceptional singer/songwriter who did a cover of Michael Jackson's Beat It in tribute, and a band called Twice Fooled, an energetic blues/rock band from right here in South Orange County.

Both of the openers were great, but Devon really took my head off. Slinging a BEAUTIFUL historic Les Paul that was signed by the late Les Paul, he delivered a show that really showed his dedication to the music and took him out of his dad's shadow.

But possibly the coolest part of the show was who I got to attend it with. Eva (Eefa!) and Günter flew down here from the East coast after going to the Hot August Blues Fest and seeing the Allman Brother's in New York (I think...). They were staying down in San Diego with Rocket as their tour guide. Libby convinced (honestly it would have been harder to convince a baby to cry) them to come up for a couple shows at the Coach House: Devon Allman tonight, and Sonny Landreth last Friday! Talk about an incredible week and a half for concerts!! Honestly though I couldn't say enough good things about these people, just a joy to be around, and all met through this forum smile

I've got to thank Libby especially though for her generosity, I think we counted around 8 shows that we've seen together, more than half of which I went to because of her! You're an amazing friend, and an immensely dedicated fan of music! That Joe poster will look great in my dorm btw...as will the signed Sonny picture AND the signed Devon picture smile

I'm not sure how long it'll be before everyone else chimes in, they're all pretty busy at the moment, Eva and Günter especially, traveling all around California and the United States! But there will be pictures! Oh, there WILL be pictures!

Oh and check this out, this is a picture of Devon Allman, playing his Les Paul that's signed by Les Paul, WITH Les Paul!

Yes, there ARE pictures Danny: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41675368@N … 978776221/ ... at least a few of them. And looky - who´s that?! http://www.flickr.com/photos/41675368@N … 978776221/ wink

I also thought the show was exceptionally good - and mind you, we saw Joe, Derek Trucks, the Allmans and Sonny Landreth just shortly before that show. Devon really doesn´t have to hide next to these guys ... his playing is passionate, energetic, soulful and rocking. He really got that "spark" and he´s such a nice guy as well ...

It was so much fun to see the show with you guys ... wish I could have stuffed you into my suitcase and taken you to Germany with me!

P.S.: Danny, write me a mail please - I´ll send you some pics. smile

I love Devon Allman. Susan and I saw him at the Wanee festival this year and I was blown away! I had never heard of him and he played at 12 noon on day 2. He was definitely a highlight of that festival for me, that included the allmans, gov't mule, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi. I'd love to see him in a club like that. A killer guitar player with a great voice, and cool songs. What more can you ask for? cool

....not to forget George, the bass player who contributed - at least in the Coachhouse show- some inspired solos and is personally a very pleasant guy.

Yeah, George is great! Always a lot of interesting bass lines going on under Devon. Very much appreciated.

Gotta love a bass player who can give you an assist on what chord to play in a pinch...

Coach House was in August, yesterday I saw him near Stuttgart. Another fantastic show: Devon in top form, the same for George on bass and the new young drummer Gabriel Strange. Highlight was their version of All along the Watchtower.
Again I was a bit shocked about a rather small audience. These guys are so good, but maybe they (the management or whatever) are not so good business men. I only heard by chance about them being around in Germany.
I promised Devon to care for more people coming to his shows. SO: if he´s playing nearby: go and see him!!

"By chance" meaning your daughter altruistically told you, even though she couldn´t see the show herself! lol

It´s really a shame that they´re playing to such small audiences, hope that´ll change as soon as the new album comes out next year. I can just agree - they´re a really good band, so go see them if you can.

When I saw them at the Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg PA, it was also a very small audience, but that was because the show had only been booked 9 days prior (because a fest they were supposed to play in NJ got cancelled) and there wasn't time to properly promote the show.  And in talking to them, you could tell that wasn't the norm for them.  Gabriel Strange gave me his email address to contact him about streetteaming next time they come around... I did email him, but never heard back... but then there hasn't been any shows to promote here yet either.

You are so right Guenter!!
They play 2 shows in Holland, this Sunday in cafe Wilhelmina in Eindhoven and Monday in De Witte Bal in Assen.
I read it on Marco's www.bluesmagazine.nl only three days ago and NOWHERE ELSE.
Very very bad promotion!
They are really good!!
