Topic: Have I lost it?

OK I admit it, I was leafing through the up coming artists for our Summer Pops concerts at the Liverpool Echo Arena and spotted .........ahem! "the petshop boys"??? Now I'm not into their music, but, they have endured the test of time and have been enormously successful, so I thought it might be interesting to see what a live show would be like, given the type of production that these guys? are known for. Or should I be starting this topic... Forgive me bretheren for I have sinned!

Re: Have I lost it?

I spose they must put on a good show having been around so long..

However may I suggest before you go that you burst your eardrums and gaffa tape your hands inside some socks. This should adequately prevent you from clawing your own eyes out during said gig.

I kid, I kid!

There is no such thing as music that shouldn't be listened to, anything and everything has something for someone and thats the beauty of it. I quite often turn up to gigs without knowing if I'll like it or not, sometimes I've been blown away...other times... well... not so much haha.

If it interests you and it doesnt cost the earth then I say go for it!

Re: Have I lost it?

Good on ya Geoff, There's so much diverse music out there and travelling around, it is a bit like travelling ... More broadens the mind and all music genre's have something for everyone
There's more than Blues out there Geoff and i too have seen loads of non Rock - Blues acts live
And i bet you know most of the songs too when they come on
Enjoy

I'm sorry Geoff but, in my opinion, the answer is yes!!

Agreed they were and are very successful but I never liked their sound, think I'd rather see Girls Aloud!

No offence Geoff!

Re: Have I lost it?

Yes Geoff you have lost it. I could suggest better things to do, let me give you an example.

Around three years ago, I realised that my musical tastes were changing somewhat, I was less interested in modern rock music and my interest in classic rock bands had started to wane.  The music that was really starting to interest me was the blues. Via bands such as Aerosmith and Gary Moore I’d worked my way back to acts such as the original Fleetwood Mac, Free etc and from there to blues artists such as BB King and Muddy Waters. I’d recently bought In Step by Stevie Ray Vaughan but I was still looking for modern acts that played those styles… this was several months before I’d heard of Joe, Aynsley et al!

Browsing a local gig guide I decided to check out a local band playing in Edinburgh called the Black Jack Blues Band and took along a friend. The five piece kicked off and the first song was Let Me Love You, one of the songs I loved from In Step. Tattoo’d Lady by Rory Gallagher was another one they played and I vowed to get more of Rory’s work. They also played a couple of tunes by a band called the Hoax, which was vaguely familiar to me as I’d seen them nearly ten years before supporting Peter Green, in one of my very few blues concerts. Anyway I loved the band and particularly the playing of the guitarist Jed. I vowed to see them again and did so a couple of times. Events move on and I offered to do some contracting work in Dublin for a period of around six months, at which point my love of Thin Lizzy resurfaced which I was alternating regularly with Rory Gallagher. After six months or so I came home and a conversation at another small concert led me to discover Joe Bonamassa, Aynsley Lister came not far behind and since then so much wonderful music.  Somehow though I can still trace back to that night I saw the Black Jack Blues band as a night I realised the blues was and could be played by young artists and it could still sound as vital and exciting as my older albums.

Anyway needing a music fix a few weeks ago I scanned the local gig guide and saw an interesting name, “Jed Pott’s and the Hillman Hunters”.  So last night I went to see Jed and his new band. This time he sings in addition to his guitar playing in a three piece playing songs by artists such as Freddie King, BB King and Muddy Waters. His playing has developed well and he has a soulful voice. We spoke for a while during the evening. He’d left the earlier band because he’d felt it was too much like pub rock, but he’d really felt the need after a while to play the blues and strip it back. He’d also recently seen Joe in Glasgow and we spoke about a future Ian Siegal concert.

So that’s a world away from the Pet Shop Boys and their music, but what it does indicate is that sometimes you can have a real revelation in a more modest and contained musical environment. Live shows and production for me are small considerations compared to the music which sometimes can really reach to your heart.

There are thousands of people out there who will be satisfied by the synthetic sounds of the Pet Shop Boys but would you really come away feeling it was worthwhile?

There are plenty of good musicians playing styles of music that you love more in small venues and half filled pubs around the county. Therefore I’d say forget about them, and go and choose to see someone playing somewhere in a small bar instead. You may just uncover a gem! J

Oh, for any of you still awake and interested here is clip of Jed Pott’s and the Hillman Hunters, playing Rory Gallagher’s I Could’ve Had Religion last night:

I saw The Chip Shop Boys performance at the BRIT's when they received a lifetime achievement award and can't say I was over impressed but people who have seen them say it's a good show but somehow not for me !

enjoy the show Geoff !

Joe Live In Rotherham....not too long to go now !

Re: Have I lost it?

OK, Sorry Tripsy, Duncan and George. How much will you pay me NOT to do a gig report. LOL Hey it's only a night out. On the other hand, there's always Britney!?

At first I was torn between never blanking out different music opportunities and having limits.

Life is finite. Use every hour well my son.

I'm with Duncan on this.
Go support some roots music in the many execellent pubs in and around Liverpool and leave the manufactured stuff to the kids.

PSB or Girls aloud.
Hmmmm let me think about that one?

Or not.

Whatever you decide.

ENJOY.

Spare us the gig report Geoff.

While I respect your right to enjoy whatever music you like, I doubt you will feel half as fulfilled as you would after seeing Joe rip it up for a couple of hours.

But Tripsy - what are you thinking? You jest I hope! Would you seriously rather see Girls (shouldn't be ) Aloud?
At least Neil Tennant and.......... the other guy (sorry) served their apprenticeship, wrote their own material, and put in a little effort over the years.
What talent did Girls Aloud possess before they appeared on one of Cowell's abominable TV lowlights? From where I was sitting, hardly any of them could hold a note - the singing lessons came later. They got their fifteen munites of fame mostly on how they looked and moved. Music was hardly ever a consideration. They say sex sells - and they were right. What better example could you want for a reason to follow Duncan's suggestion and get out and find some good, honest to goodness, real live music?

Oh I do feel better for that. lol

Re: Have I lost it?

I have to say you are crazy.  i know nothing about the band, but the name is gay as hell.  or stupid is hell, whichever is less offensive.  All I know about the band is the name.

Anyway, the point is that the fact that they are still touring doesn't mean they are worth seeing.  the new kids on the block are currently on tour headlining giant venues all across the country.  i'm talking five digits of people at eachshow.  the new kids. pop crap in human form.  honestly if musical soulessness could be personified, they would be it.  need i say more?  quality of music is the ONLY thing of relevance.  nothing else.  if they are around for a day or a year.

Now i know nothing about the pet shop boys, but that is my opinion on your logic for seeing them.  Bad is bad, good is good.  lasting or not. Turds float longer than diamonds.  that doesn't mean they have more value.  I say **## with no integrity is **## with no integrity with no exceptions.

the band may be good.  You have heard them I haven't.  But who is really that much better after a long time touring.  No one.  That is why the term prime exists.  It may be better now to longtime fans who have grown with them, but clearly you haven't.

that said, live music always has the potential to at least be fun even if it is not timeless.  So since you're seeing it, take it for what it is, have a drink or ten and have a good time.

Don't do it mate!

I've been to Liverpool for nights out and one of the things that amazed me was that even in the 'touristy' and busy part of the town (Matthew Street?) there were loads of pubs with live music - and some of the bands were pretty good.

Settle for a few pints of your favourite tipple - save £40 on the ticket and watch some real live music.

Re: Have I lost it?

Agree with Wombat, head to the venue early, sell your tickets to the highest bidder and then head to a small local venue for some "real" live music! smile

You know - when we were in Grand Bahama last year Joe was opening for BB King and we ever so nearly hopped over to Florida for that one - only thing holding us back was the cost!

Let's just forget about this one, I'm feelin' proper miserable now. All me mates think I'm a plonker just 'cos I thought I was being open minded, only to find that I am a plonker. Listen, if I couldn't sell 4 Joe good Bonamassa tickets outside the Royal Albert Hall on the 4th May (fact), What chance have I got of selling these damn things!

You had spare tickets for the RAH?! You should have told me at Dingwalls, I'm certain we'd have sold them (sorry to not make you feel better).
