Topic: PC problems....

I know this isn't a big thing, but when you've got PC problems(No, not Phil Cornell, I'm talking about Personal Computer problems.....just kidding Phil wink), it's like a major part of your communication has been cut off! sad My PC expired at the end of last week and so, a new one has been ordered and my local PC shop is building it and copying all of the data over.

When you sit down and think about what you've got stored on a PC, the list is quite daunting. I estimate about 3 to 4,000 pictures, videos, E-mails, information regarding accounts, etc. is stored on it. In addition, most of my bill paying and banking is done on it. Many times, items for the home are ordered using it; truly an amazing piece of equipment in life today.

Hopefully, I should have a new and faster one in about a week. Got some video and pictures to share. smile

Re: PC problems....

Roy, I know it might be an extra expensive but you might want to consider buying a NAS (network attatched storage) drive, this type of technology is commonly used in business's and in server environments for file sharing and back ups. However the prices (of what is essentially a hard drive attached to the network) have significantly dropped over the past few years £80 unsure how many dollars that is would get a reasonable sized NAS Drive.

I dont think I could function with out one, my pc simply runs applications and all my files are stored on the NAS drive, so if my computer does die or break (which always happens when I have important information that I need that day or the following day) I can simply plug a laptop or pda or iphone etc etc in to my network and pull the file, with a bit of setting up you can also access them remotely smile from a friends house or what not.

Unfortunately computers these days just arnt built to last the good old days of spilling tea and coffee into computers > drying them out and booting up fine are long gone sad

Re: PC problems....

Backup Backup Backup....... Simplest way is to back up to a usb or firewire drive using a an easy to use program like folder clone. for personal use it is pointless backing up programs as you have discs for these. You just need to back up the data you save.
I would also recommend an off site backup as backing up in the same location still leaves you vulnerable to fire, theft or general disaster. Off site back up cost peanuts these days.
From experience I would not touch any system that compresses the data for backup.

Re: PC problems....

I just back my stuff up once a month on an external hard drive. Over here in the UK you can get a 1TB (1000ish gigabytes) for around £80.

Also, I copy that across onto a friend's hard drive too. Meaning all the stuff I really want to keep is backed up off site too.  Like all my recordings and pictures. As all our stuff is linked too through xbox's etc, when we all get together we can just stick hundreds of pictures on a slideshow on the TV. It's always nice when a random picture comes up and someone pipes up "ahhhh remember that?!.."

It normally of me... doing something stupid...

Re: PC problems....

That's a very good idea John and I'll have to look into it. My old PC, believe it or not, didn't even have a DVD burner in it. I had a CD burner and a CD player which allowed me to copy live audio shows from CD direct. The new one will have a DVD burner and one of the first things I want to do is copy most of my pictures to DVD to preserve them. The new PC should be a lot faster too even though my old one had a 1.8 Gig Pentium 4 processor. I really think what bogged down my old PC was the slow RAM. Trying to copy video to my old PC from my video camera, then edit it and then upload it to Youtube was like spending a day in surgery. I'm hoping that improves a lot!

Actually John, that's why I haven't commented on your thread about your band. My company blocks me from Facebook and MySpace and so I really should go to my wife or daughter's PC to take a peek at your videos. That is, if I could only remember to do that when I get home. Darn, it's tough getting old! wink

Also very good advice Martin and Greg! I'm starting to think people over the Big Pond are much more advanced that we are over here. Well, at least much more advanced than I am.

Thanks Guys!! smile

Re: PC problems....

I dunno about being more advanced man...

Me and my mates are all pretty geeky in different areas, with me its mainly guitars and amps, stereo's etc another is a mac expert, another pretty damn good at TV's and all that lot. So we all kinda pool our resources heh.

And honestly... it's really not hard to do!

Re: PC problems....

Guilty as charged John! lol

Actually, we've been so busy and short handed at work, I haven't hardly any time to even post on the forum. Such is work life in America; do much more with less people all the while bogging us down with more applications which are simply used to prove our worth to the top of the corporation. I, at one time, felt like an integral part of this company. Now, I barely feel like a bolt in a machine. Oh well, that's my editorial opinion for today.

Hopefully, 3 years from now, I can do something I really love. Like being a roadie for Joe, or a greens keeper at a local golf course. Heck, maybe I'll have enough time to practice my guitar playing? wink

Re: PC problems....

Macs and their whole system is brilliant, I really miss mine but found then not to be reliable, 2 powerbook pro's completely dead just out of warranty and hellishly expensive to fix.  I do run them to the max. The airport back system they have is neat too. Make sure you have the extended warranty, breakdown issues are a known problem.

Don't block the forum though John, they you can't use it and you'd prevent the staff finding Joe! lol

The network drive is the way to go.  And they are tebibytes huge, terabytes (that's a TRILLION!!!!!!!!!!!!) if you prefer, and those Tb's are quickly coming down in price, even now very affordable.  And you can have your movies, videos, music, photos, torrents, and more staged on them and accessible to everyone in your household (or whatever, wherever) network. Highly recommended as it keeps the "regular" computers less congested.

Re: PC problems....

Apple has a wireless internet router with a hard drive in it called a Time Capsule. It doesn't matter if you have mac or pc to use it. Every hour it will look for new files on you computer to back up. You can rewind (at any time) or date to see files you may have deleted, or to rewind your computer back to when it wasn't having problems. If you get a new computer you can dump the most recent back up over to it with no worries.

I got the 1TB version... plenty of space. 1200 or so gigabytes! It was $500, but I'm convinced it will last me at least 6 years. It also has a USB plug on it for wireless printing! great for laptops.

Yeah Nic, that thing rocks for back up, a loooong tie coming for something as easy.  A network drive (think server sort of) and a back up and you're in good shape regardless of any damn compuker's (sic) attitudinal displays of disaffection.

$500 is a bit much Nic, but maybe I had better head back to Milwaukee PC and ask about a Network drive in the 1TB region. We've got three PC's running in the home off my Linksys wireless router and maybe a Network drive is the way to go. I think I'll stop and jaw with the lads tonight. smile

Good choice Roy as they can handle backup easily (included software) too.
