Topic: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

Davy Knowles released his new album yesterday on iTunes and was wondering if any have heard it.  Produced by Peter Frampton, it's somewhat of a departure from BDS's Roll Away - less blues and more rock, but there's also some country and even jazz thrown in.  It's definitely a more commercial effort and from early reviews some fans of BDS are having trouble accepting a different sound from Davy.  Personally, I like this album much more than Roll Away.  There's more focus on his singing which I feel is his strength and less on long guitar solos.  About half the album really rocks, especially on "Keep On Searchin'", "Coming Up For Air" and "Riverbed".  The very personal "Amber's Song", could be a CMT hit - great mandolin on it.  But, it's "Saving Myself" that I feel is the song that raises the bar big time for this major talent.  Hope ya all get a chance to listen to this great album.

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

I downloaded this yesterday and have listened to it 3 times since then. I think this is a much stronger album than "Roll Away" and feel it has the potential to break Davy on the radio and to a wider audience.

I agree. Such a great album. I'll never see him in a club with 100 people again after this one.

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

It's available as an advance order on UK Amazon- at £17.50!!!!! Er maybe I can wait for this one. His management seems focussed totally on the US, the UK doesn't seem to feature in ANY of his plans, which is kind of disappointing, given his previous support from us lot on here in the UK!

I hate to be the lame animal in this thread, but everytime I listen to the album I'm waiting for it to get heavier or or more meaty. Like the album never hits a stride. It was a lot softer and slower than I was expecting. I still prefer Roll Away. This one will grow on me, but I think a lot of the heavier tones or Gov't Mule esque things I was expecting on the album are not really there. It's a good album for clean songs. Good, not great.

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

I am enjoying this album so far - doesn't pack quite the punch I was expecting, but is still good.  I think part of the reason for feeling this way is probably because I have seen BDS live four times, and studio never packs the punch that a live show does (at least in my opinion).  I love Tear Down the Walls live but find the one on this album doesn't have the same impact.  I have felt similar about lots of Joe's music - live is so much better!  I was quite impressed by the fact that Benmont Tench played keys on this, but a lot of the background vocals distracted from the songs in my opinion.

As NBP has said it will grow on me - I wasn't completely sold on Roll Away the first time I heard it.  I do like the mandolin stuff.  I am going to see them in July in Vermont and expect to be as blown away by the live versions of these songs as I was last year with the Roll Away stuff.

Second album jinx/blues (or whatever you call it)? - Joe referred to his 2nd album as a "coaster" (not in my opinion, though), and I think many times a 2nd album from performers seems to not always live up to expectations - Led Zeppelin II jumps quickly to mind, and who remembers the name of the second Beatles album?

Bad examples to use as examples of second album jinxes, as With The Beatles spent 21 weeks at #1 in the UK, 5 weeks at #1 in the US in its US counterpart 'The Beatles Second Album,(55 weeks on the charts) and Led Zeppelin II is acknowledged as a classic, cited as being a blueprint for 70's heavy rock,  the first Zeppelin album to hit #1 in the US, and has sold in excess of 12 million copies in the US alone. There isn't a bad track on the whole album.

This album doesn't even belong in the same conversation with either one of those two albums. Underwhelming comes to mind.

You are right Keith - I did goof on the Led Zeppelin - it was "II" that was so great, the third one was a bit of a let-down. Having a senior moment. I'll stand by the Beatles though - I have every Beatles album ever made from the sixties - except for the second one, and I never missed not having it.  Somedays I feel lucky I can remember what happened yesterday let alone forty years ago!:)

I felt the same way about Joe's Sloe Gin when it first came out. Need to take it for what it is not what you want it to be. Hopefully you will like Davy's new one as much as I like Sloe Gin now.

Don't worry Eric. Just like Joe does, Davy will keep in close contact with his fans via meet and greet sessions. I don't see him chaging his ways as he's always been very approachable.

I pre-ordered the album a few days ago and anxiously await its arrival. smile

Oh I think he will. I think it's good for him to move up.

It'll be cool to see how far he goes and to know that I saw him in the beginning.

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

I bought the album on Itunes. Not a big fan of digital downloads. Got nothing to hold and read. Instant gratification. Impulse buying at its worst.

I like the album. The first one never gabbed me. This one does. I will be interested to see him with a band that matches him in abilities.

I'll probabably buy a physical copy too.

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

I downloaded the album yesterday, and at first listen didn't quite know what to think?
On the second listen I think its a good  sophmore effort by Davy , and definetly aimed
at a more mainstream audience . Lots of radio friendly songs that focus more on
Davy's vocals and less on his guitar prowness. He's still layin down the riffs just not
as heavily as on "RollAway"
I hope "Coming Up For Air " gets Davys name to the masses. He can Write, he can sing ,
he can play ,and he's surrounded by good people.
Can't wait to see the new band on July 10 (Vt. ) and August 15 (Md.) Does anyone know who's in
the touring band ? Is it a 3 piece or do they have the keys too?

Hey Paul,

When I spoke with Davy in Milwaukee on April 18th, he said he had a bass player and drummer lined up for his tour. However, he did say he was still looking for a keyboard player and hadn't found one to his liking yet. I'm sure either way, the show will go on and will be very good! Hey, Davy as a solo act was simply outstanding, so add a couple of guys and it will be even better!! smile

Re: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam's Coming Up For Air

I saw the new band at the CBF, and, even though this new CD is much more "produced" than BDS fans are used to, the live shows remain "raw". Evan told me they were looking for a key board player. (George posted pics of Davy with the Les Paul under the CBF thread.) I e-mailed Evan asking for the names of the drummer and bass player. I haven't heard back yet. I do know the drummer was with them when they were touring with G'Mule. Working as a tech I think.

I've also had to spend some time with this CD. I've had to erase my expectations and just treat it as a new entity. I have warmed to it and think I understand. Just like early Joe, Davy is still finding his way. He's got years to do that. This is a well made, satisfying group of songs. Davy's vocals, songwriting and guitar skills are all there. And, best of all, the shows remain full of all the guitar riffs a body can take.                                                 Cathy

P.S. Cathy asked me to add the following - she specifically asked Evan about the band coming to Europe and was told that there was no chance this year. She impressed upon him the degree of interest in Europe, so fingers crossed for next year! - ed.

I am with you on this one. It's not that this is just a slow album (it is), it is just plain not a very good album. Songs like Country Girl just ramble and seem hollow. I think this is a step backwards from the first album with an intention of being "more commercial."
