I saw him years and he was fantastic smile

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

See him.  Barring incredibly high priced tickets.  he is a legend.  Even if he isn't what he once was (and i'm not saying he's not, I've not seen him) he's a legend.

YES YES YES!!! I've not heard any rumors that his skills have declined. One of the best slide guitar players out there. I promise you won't be disappointed.  Cathy

Speaking as a person with some Scots blood in his veins, I can understand how you feel about that Duncan lol

Brilliant and inspirational as Cooder has been over the years (he's been a significant influence on my playing - via Keef of course) you know that £75 will get you into several really good gigs seeing the present and future stars of the blues. Hell - you could see Joe 3 times for that!

You have to decide - would you like to phone a friend?

I'm glad I dont have this dilemna - the dates and venues rule it out for me. But I personally think the guys that are working their butts off looking for that big break maybe deserve our support just a bit more than he needs it.

I feel I know you pretty well now - If I were a betting man I think I'd know where to put my money wink .

Hey - just thought - can't you blag your way in and do a review for Blues Matters - gotta be worth a try!

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

That's a bargain Duncan (compared to the London prices) hmm

The best seats for the London shows are £85 and then £50 for the "cheap" seats yikes

I'll spend my money on the Leamington blues day.

Cathy and I have briefly consulted and we share Martin's opinion. You can see so many more worthwhile young artists for that money!

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

Well, if he would play with John Lee Hooker or with Ali Farka Toure..... but both are dead. Ry is still alive, but honestly his last albums were lousy. Nonetheless I would go and see him  .....  because he´s a legend already.

£75 is really pushing it.     Neil Young was only £50!!!!!

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

Sorry, sort of off topic - there's something fundamentally wrong when Ry Cooder can charge 75 quid, whereas you can go and see another band whom I would also call 'legendary' - Little Feat - for $12.50. (I know, not really a valid comparison, different countries, different venues, but you get my drift....)

Quite apart from the obvious comparison with Joe's ticket prices. Cooder is certainly a legend, one of the great and influential musicians of our time, but only you can decide how much he's worth to you. Personally, I wouldn't pay 75 quid.

I think we are agreed...

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

I don't agree! I have never had a remote chance of seeing Ry Cooder (Little Village was a short-lived hope) and I would pay twice that amount to see him put down a 12 second riff on a 30 second TV or radio commercial, uncredited...

Granted, that is me, not you...

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

YES.

It´s as simple as that.

When I listened to some of his stuff recently, sitting outside on a beautiful summer evening, I thought Ry Cooder has found the formula for the universe ... or something like that. lol
I would pay a lot to see him play.

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

It really depends on  your perspective.  how big a ry cooder fan are you.  Though I don't think anyone should ever charge that much for a ticket, last year I paid a hundred bucks ($100) for a ticket to see Tom Waits, who is possibly my favorite artist of all time, and it was worth every penny.  It was honestly the best show I have ever seen.  Personally I would not even pay half that to see ry cooder, but that is because I am almost completely unfamiliar with his music.  If he really is that good and you can recognize most of his songs I say go for it, you never know when your favorite artist is going to kick the bucket, and when they do I guarentee you'll regret not shelling out the money to see them.  You can forget 75 bucks by the time next pay day rolls around.  A good concert experience is unforgettable.

Re: Should I see Ry Cooder?

Well, I'm grabbing my chance to see a legend on the cheap this Friday! big_smile

As some of you know, my son works at the Carre theater here in Amsterdam. He was offered a staff discount ticket for Ry Cooder with Nick Lowe - 'normal' price 130 euros! roll - for only 26 euros. Since he wasn't interested, I'm going. cool

Yes, yes, I will scout the Carre in preparation for our November invasion. wink
