I saw this band this past saturday. It was quite an experience. First of all, if you are considering seeing stoney curtis band, just do it. i guarentee you will get your dollar's worth. It was in this little music venue/bar out in the middle of nowhere in iowa, there were maybe, MAYBE 20 other people there at the fullest. In spite of this, the band came on and played a hell of a good show. I really don't think you have ever seen a band who enjoys playing this much.
After the first set, as stoney walked by our table I told him it was a good set, then requested that he play the song 'colors' from his first album. He was shocked that I had heard the song, had his albums, and had actually gone out that night specifically to see his band. I have never seen someone so appreciative and humble. So then they played the song etc and it kicked ****.
A word about how this band plays. It is a lot like ANDY live era joe to make a comparison. Very tight, but not too tight, lots of seemless solos. Didn't really have a perfectly planned set, picking the songs out right before they played them, etc. Tons of covers, but also tons of originals. Stoney really gives that strat a workout. He is one of the best guitar players I have ever seen with my own eyes. At times he did things with his electric akin to what tommy emmanuel does with his acoustic. Very cool.
After that second set, he came down and sat with us and just started talking about how we discovered him, etc. I said how it was great to see him come out and play his **** off even though no one there is there to see specifically him and there is hardly anyone there. he said he is stoked to play whether it is an audience of 5 or 500 people. As the show went on the audience got more and more into the music (and more and more drunk, coincidence?) and the band really fed off this and really wailed out there.
he is very aware of this board by the way, telling me that he met andre wittebroek. He remembered your name andre
. By the way mcbl, i asked, no news on the uk tour i'm afraid, he said he didn't know.
I said the band liked to play. Yes, they do. Going on shortly after nine pm, they played for over four hours. FOUR HOURS! We actually left as we had an hour drive home and it was 1 30 in the morning, but i presume they played until the bar closed at two. Go see this band, they really appreciate their fans and really play their hearts out. By the end of the night all the other people in the bar were super drunk and yelling, getting on the stage, insisting on srv covers, etc. the atmosphere was not good if you were sober.
covers included thrill is gone, phone booth, cold shot, all along the watchtower, knockin on heaven's door, a zz top medley which included just got paid waitin for the bus and jesus just left chicago, pride and joy, day of the eagle, too rolling stoned, straighten it out along with several others. the knockin on heaven's door was their own arrangement i believe, though it could have just been one i had never heard.
originals played included last train to chicago, colors, girlfriend, behind the sun, rain over me, baby needs lovin, sometiems she likes me, american lady, blues without you, crashing down like thunder, along with a few others. There were also several songs I didn't recognize that i think may be new songs or could just be covers i am unfamiliar with.
They jammed heavily throughout most of these songs making many of them longer than the studio version. the live version of girlfriend and behind the sun were particularily amazing. I'll stop rambling now but i will just say check the tour dates go see them if they come near, it is really as much music as you want to hear as you can just leave if you feel it is going too long.
