Topic: Eric Johnson Coach House Show

I'm going to try and not have complete diarrhea of the fingers here...tonight was AWESOME.

I met Libby and Steve at the Coach House for some incredible music consisting of a band called Wave, Shawn Jones, and Mr. Eric Johnson.

Here's a set list:
12 to 12 Vibe
Trademark
Friends
Tribute to Jerry Reid
Face to Face
My Back Pages
Manhattan
Country thing from Austin City Limits by Kyle Brock (bass)
Camel's Night Out
When the Sun Meets the Sky
For Texy(?)
Desert Rose
Cliffs of Dover
Axis Bold As Love
Are You Experienced?

there may be more that I forgot about but that's most of it

So I had an amazing time and met some seriously cool people. I got there at around 5:20 (40 minutes before the doors open) and parked as close as possible (this becomes relevant later), and started talking with Eric's merchandise guy John. A very nice guy with lots to say, we just talked for awhile until I figured I'd go in and see Libby and Steve.

I'm gonna let Libby fill in the details about the performances because my mind was BLOWN afterwards.

In short I met an incredible woman named Tanya Rivers who I'm going to get in contact with because she's that incredible. Then my car got stuck when the tour bus pulled in. Then I met Eric.

His manager took a bunch of us upstairs into the heart of the Coach House into his dressing room to hang out and chat a bit. Epic. Seriously. Eric's a really nice guy, we chatted about my being in a jazz band, Stevie Wonder, and my musical career. Really laid back awesome dude. Seriously.

I'm not sleeping tonight. Gonna stay up and play guitar.

Night.

That sounds like a near perfect night for you Danny. So glad! Eric is amazing to watch. A little guy that puts out a huge sound. I couldn't take mt eyes off him at the last show. A wall of sound from a single source..Wow!  Inspired to practice? Good for you...stick with it. I'll pre-order your first CD.    Cathy

I would say Eric and Joe are the best guitarists alive today. This one is my favorite by Eric. Phenomenal!

Re: Eric Johnson Coach House Show

Haha Tanya didn't set me up to meet Eric, I think he was just in a good mood. Erics manager brought us up, so I assume Eric okay'd it first. It was really cool though, Eric may be shy but he's a very nice man. I told him about how I was in a jazz band and he was asking questions about it and stuff...incredible.

Re: Eric Johnson Coach House Show

Well since he's down here Sunday, I missed out on you & Lib 'n Stever. Thanks for the setlist, looks like a beaut.

My friend was going bonkers, because he thought Eric was only going to be up there ( and works week nights), 'til I dropped a ticket in his hand this week! smile

Oops.  Better late than NEVER??  I hope??  Sorry for my TWO month delay...... I wrote the following just a few days after the show and then..... well, who knows.... life got in the way..... like a big Mack truck.  Here you go:

We enjoyed the show, very much....... Eric was everything you all had told me he would be and then some.  So smooth and fluid - his skill is so tremendous that I think some might miss the genius of it BECAUSE he makes it look so effortless.  He's really quite phenomenal to watch.  I'm sorry that we missed the fun at the end.  We had two hours further to drive home than Danny did, and Steve was anxious to get on the road.  I'm really glad that Danny got to meet him though.  Really glad.  It's always fun for me to see such a gifted artist thru the appreciative eyes of a young musician like Danny too.  I'm very glad that he was able to join us in our terrific seats again.  My little buddy. (LOL!!!!  NOT little..... you should see the pics where I come up to his armpit!!!)

Also of interest to me..... the crowd was VERY intensely MUSICALLY focused...... thankfully, for once, there seemed to be a noticeable absence of loud, chatty folks who seem to make drinking more of a priority than the evening's entertainment.  From the conversations I had with people, there were a LOT of musicians in the crowd.  I think Eric is a musician's musician, if ever there was one.

I also chatted with two people who are VERY involved EJ Forum members.  How funny that was for me..... sort of like meeting someone from a parallel universe........ they are SO focused on "their guy"..... and all of THEIR forum friends were waiting, chomping at the bit for reviews and photos, etc.  The young man, a Brit, actually saw a Joe show in Baltimore...... we had that conversation after they spotted my JB T-shirt.

Tanya is indeed a fantastic lady.  We met months ago and I look forward to seeing her at almost every C.H. show.  She's fun and energetic and has an incredible background.  She's been very friendly with us and I'm glad you liked her so much Danny.

Shawn Jones, who provided the second act of the evening, appeared this night without his band, and without his electic guitars.  Instead, we were treated to a really quite awesome all acoustic blues set.  Stunning.  Loved it.  This was actually the third time we've seen Shawn.  He perfomed on the Main Stage at the Doheny Blues Festival too.  He's super.  I'll post a link to his site:

http://www.shawnjonesmusic.com/home.html

Eventually, I'll get around to posting some video from the evening of both Eric and Shawn.  Give me some time.

L

big_smile  Okay...... fast forward to April........... guess what???  I have NOT uploaded any video of Shawn Jones yet, however, I did just post TWO, count them TWO, videos of Eric from that night.  Here he is with 'Manhattan' and 'Are You Experienced'.  And, Danny, the only thing that I know that's missing from that set list is ' Third Stone from the Sun', another Hendrix tune which was played together with 'Are You Experienced'.  I didn't catch it on video though.  I may post a third song, but, in the meantime.....here are the links.  Enjoy.  Make sure to use the HQ option on the bottom right corner of the vids for optimal viewing.

Re: Eric Johnson Coach House Show

Ah holy crap! Thanks Libby! Happy Bonametalhood to me indeed! This is gonna set the *cough cough* tone of my guitar playing for the day!

Ah I forgot to mention this initially. Eric had an old vacuum on stage for Are You Experienced?. He turned it on in the background during his solo...not sure why.

Hmmmmm...... well I do NOT know ANYTHING how such things work, but my memory tells me that Eric spoke about using the vaccuum cleaner (and other things) to make some sort of EFFECT ..... I mean some sort of effect other than the sound of a vaccuum running....... and he also went over to it and played next to it for awhile..... didn't he, Danny??  I was thinking that maybe he was using it in some sort of Theraminy kind of way (I know I just made up a word......)  Certainly all of you musicians would understand the art and science of whatever he was doing more than I would....... darn..... I wish I had his comments about it on video.  It's all Greek to me...... but, I'm learning...... slowly...... and I thank all of my teachers..... most of whom are right HERE.  smile
