Stratpaulguy,

just got my first Ceriatone deivered today.  It's the 36w. TMB EF86 with the half power switch.  Just amazing.  Really took the pedals well too.  I was concerned about that since it does not have an effects loop.  My chain is

R8  -  OCD  -  DD6  -  Holygrail

Sounds very good and VERY LOUD.  I ordered it on March 9th and it arrived April 3rd.  Not bad!

Already planning the next buy from Nik.  Maybe OTS or JTM - 45.

I'm now a very big Ceriatone fan!

Ok Jim, Nik at Ceriatone suggested this exact amp to me for what I was after as far as tone was concerned....Now that I can talk to someone about it, give me your thoughts on this amp..let me know everything...good or bad....Nik said it was kind of a plexi in channel 1 and a vox style in #2...what do you think?

Thanks a ton for your help guys. Budda, I kow exactly what you're talking about. I can sort of do that will my Fulldrive, but I have to roll the pot down to around 1/4 haha.

As far as tubes, what do you think would be best for overdrive at low volumes? Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the output tubes make more of a difference that preamp tubes? What charachteristics  do each of the type of tubes have?

EDIT- Also, do you think the guys at Guitar Center would mind if I brought in my guitar to try the amps out with?

The output tubes do play a critical role in the tone IF you are able to make them sweat a little bit.  You probably won't hear the differences between a 6L6, 6V6, EL34, EL84, KT66 etc at whisper volumes.  Here's my take on how each sound:

6L6 -Glassy, round, bright with a lot of bottom end authority (metal heads love them in their Mesas).  The 6L6 articulates nicely.

6V6 -Similar to the 6L6 with less headroom, less volume, sweeter top end with perhaps a more maintained bottom end.  Midrange is warmer than the 6L6.  The 6V6 has more a compressed quality than many tubes.

EL34 -A midrangey tube with a good amount of bottom, moderate headroom (less than 6L6), and a snappy bite and attack.  The top end is kind of bright but not as harsh as the 6L6.  Has the more aggressive British sound.  Great articulation.

EL84 -Chimey, less headroom than a EL34, and a great upper midrange.  Less bottom end than a EL34 but is more pronounced in the higher frequencies.  The OTHER British sound.

KT66 -Warm, fuzzy, midrangey with a much looser bottom end than the EL34 and less headroom as well.  The KT66 is not as aggressive as the EL34 either.  Very smooth singing quality with a brown, wooly edge to the sound.

My low volume favorites are definately the 6V6 and the EL84.  Good luck, hope this clears things up!

Matt:  As a fellow Marylander, I'd suggest you might want to take a drive over to Atomic Music in Beltsville (on Bacon Drive, just off Rte 1 - College Park exit off 495 and try and play a few different ampts.

I just went there on Saturday and they had a nice collection of used amps in the price range you're looking for.  I picked up a Fender Hot Rod Deville 2x12 for under $600.  They had at least a few Peavey Classic combos (30/50...wasn't paying attention, I have a Delta Blues that I've tired of and wanted something more Fendery).

If distance is a problem, they also have a store in Rockville on Gude Dr. but I've never been there and it's smallish so the selection is probably much more limited.

Good luck....and let us know what you end up with.

Les Paul 4

your questions about the 36 w. TMB EF86:

It took 25 days from the day I ordered it to the day DHL pulled into my driveway.  Amp was very well packaged and included a free Ceriatone T-shirt and all of the boxes the tubes came in should I need to replace them (all JJ's)

TMB Channel:  My favorite.  Treble, Middle and Bass EQ with a master volume.  Very nice traditional marshall sound and crunch (and at fairly low volumes with the 1/2 power switch).

EF86 Channel:  I haven't had a chance to play with this one much, but at first listen, it is more Voxy sounding.  Just a volume and a tone control.  The tone know actually has 6 different settings or "clicks."  The more you turn clockwise the deeper the sound or in my opinion, the more like a humbucker pu.

The back has 3 ohm imputs to plug into your cabinet / speakers.   (oh, I'm playing an R8 though a Marshall 1960 4 x 12 cab)

Also on the back is what Nik calls a Negative Feedback Switch (it is labeled on or off).  Seems to me (or to my ears) to be just a mojo switch.  When in the on position, it adds a bit of deepness to the tone on either channel.  I like it in the on position.

The one thing I have not spent enough time with (I've been stuck on the TMB channel) is to jump the 2 channels with a chord.  I have tried (briefly) to have the guitar plugged into the high output of the TMB chaneel and jumping the low TMB imput with the high EF86 imput.  Now, you can use all of the EQ's for both channels at the same time.  This will take some time to get a feel for, but I feel it is a very good thing and will add a great deal of additional tonal options.

Overall, I am very pleased.  I have a Marshall DSL 100 head, but have trouble achieving that beefed - up tone and crunch at bedroom (or in my case, basement) volume levels.  Don't get me wrong, this thing is loud!!!  I turned the master volume on TMB, up to a little over 2 and could not stay in my office in the basement with it (thank goodness for long chords).  It should be good for almost any small to medium sized venue.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical sending my credit card number to a blind E-mail address in Malaysia, but all the E-mail conversations I had with Nik really put me at ease.  I asked him a lot of questions about a lot of his amps and we finally nailed down to the 36 w.

What other questions doe you have my Brother?

Jim

I've heard of that place- I think they sell things on Ebay. We're not too far away from Beltsville and my parents work in Rockville actually so that would probably be actually convenient.

The thing I hate about Guitar Center is that they have a ton of amps, but only a few are plugged in! I remember once I went there they had an Orange Tiny Terror and an AD30 but only the TT was plugged in!

I will definately check that out, thanks for the tip!

Any shop should be HAPPY to plug in the Amps, and hook up Cabs, etc. Otherwise, why are the salespeople there, if not to help sale the merchandise.

Guitar Center sucks.  I only buy something there if it's used and hard to find locally.  The salesman are horrible, at least in Florida.  In their defense though a lot of dumb kids will just turn an amp on and leave it on all day without a speaker cable hooked up to a cabinet thus frying that $2000 amp they will never buy.  Not to mention it must be annoying to hear nothing but "CHUG CHUG CHUG CHUGGA" palm muted drop C tuned guitars and pick squeals.

Sad but true:lol:

I think I have narrowed my amps down to.... Orange Tiny Terror, Egnater Rebel, Peavey Classic 30, Vox Nighttrain.

Since I havent been able to crank these amps, I can't get a full idea of their tones.
Which of these amps can give me a nice smooth  distortion/overdrive like this:

But can also give me same hairy tones like this:

Re: Egnater Rebel/ Amp suggestions

While I think those amps are good, and heck some great tones can be had out of them, I think you owe it to yourself to check out the Ceriatone clones.  Especially seeing that you are on a budget you get the maximum bang for your buck from buying a clone IMO.  And again what it sound like you are describing to me is a Trainwreck!! wink  Check these clips out and tell me that a TT, Rebel, or Classic 30 can compare...

If I HAD to choose from your finalists though I would probably go with the Peavey because they do rock and are warm sounding.  I have played a Egnater Rebel and thought it sounded fine as well.  Good luck man, and don't be afraid to buy used there are plenty of deals to be had in this lousy economy! smile

Wow... that was really nice... perfect tone... wow... wow... I need one... time to go count the pennies...

Sorry one more thing is there a difference between the Ceriatone Expression and the Liver Pull?

You know, I have a lot more gear than I need, but not as much as I want.

Re: Egnater Rebel/ Amp suggestions

When I emailed Nik he said that the power tubes are what  make the differences in the sound.  Nik says the EL84s in the Liverpool lend a vox like chime and character to the sound.  The Express has EL34s which is said to be more aggressive and have more gain.  The clips you heard were of the Express.  The cool thing about the Express circuit is that you can substitute the EL34's for 6V6's to lower the overall volume and get the higher gain sound earlier.  Beware though these amps are LOUD and you may need to use an attenuator to tame them depending on your needs.  Nik also installs a half power switch on them for $15 to lower the volume even more if needed.  I was quoted $960 for the Expression loaded with tubes, complete with head cabinet, and shipped to my door.  Good luck saving your pennies!  I think it will be worth the wait man, I can't wait to get mine! big_smile
