Topic: Girlpower and Oli

Just came home from one of these shows after which you can´t even think of sleeping ...
After missing the Bluescaravan 09 in January due to exams, I finally had the chance to see Joanne Shaw Taylor, Oli Brown and Erja Lytinnen tonight - that was easily the best concert I have seen this year so far - these three youngsters even outplayed Bryan Lee, who put on an awesome show last Friday at the same Festival.

The three of them won the audience over in a heartbeat with their first song together and as soon as Joanne started playing her set I felt like my mouth fell open and didn´t close again until she was finished. This girl is a Hurricane! She looks so sweet at first and you just don´t expect that storm of Bluesrock coming out of her ... man, she can play - and her voice is spot on. She became my new Bluesrock-Heroine instantly. If this girl plays a show anywhere near you, go see her. That´s an order. big_smile
Oli Brown followed and had to match up to high expectations, because I had heard so many good things about him and seen all these videos from Tripsy and Duncan - and he really DID match up to these expectations. I honestly can´t believe that he only picked up the guitar 6 years ago, that´s incredible. His playing was great, a bit of Blues, a bit of Funk, a bit of Rock - and all wrapped up in Oli´s own style. The crowd went nuts while he played "Open road" and "Black Betty" ...
After a short pause Erja Lytinnen came on stage and looked a bit pale in comparison at first - despite her shiny sparkling guitars. But she did get better during her set - played some really rocking Slide solos during a Blues version of "Satisfaction". Had I seen her alone I would have loved the show, but in comparison to Joanne and Oli her playing was just a wee bit more "standard" ... but kudos for doing the whole show in high heels. wink
They finished the show by playing some songs together ("Never make your move too soon" and "Pack it up" among others) and had to come back for two long encores, because the audience just wouldn´t let them go ... and rightfully so!

I bought Oli´s and Joanne´s albums and when I shortly talked to them after the show, Joanne asked me about my Joe-shirt and so I suggested that the two of them should play a duet together sometime - she told me to put a word in for her. So Joe - consider this, she´s a kick-a** girl. wink

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Great write up EVA. Something else aren't they?  I have seen jo a few times now and have another 2 shows booked.  Saw Oli for the first time last week and he was awesome. You wait till you catch Virgil who is supporting some Oli and Jo gigs in the Uk, early days for him bit very impressive.
Tell me did it work well with them all on stage together? I have not witnessed that. Any videos?

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Eva , You painted a great concert with words there , am well jealous cos it sounded like a brilliant show and if they were playing in London i would've gone to that line up
Oli & Joanne are just great young Blues artists who are holding the torch here in The UK
Standout songs/albums they have both released , glad you got to see 'em and would be great if Joe dragged em along for a UK/European they would be very complementery to his sound for an opening act , A different Bluesy feel

Thanks Eva

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Very nice review Eva and it sure sounds like you had a wondeful time! Isn't it great finding these young artists who really have it going in the right direction? Just can't get enough, can we? wink

Roy

Joe is the Best!

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Haha, I knew you would enjoy it. Great aren't they? The format really works well together although I think it is tough for Erja to follow the other two. She obviousy didn't come across as the wedding act I suggested so maybe I was unfair and she should get extra marks for the high heels! Its just compared to Oli and Joanne I don't think she can compare - they both really smoke!

The 2 Jo's on a duet. Would be something to see and hear for sure!

I look forward to catching both Oli and Joanne on their next tours. See you there!

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Eva – sounds like you had a great time with the Blues Caravan..
Having seen Oli live last week, I know what a great talent he is – especially for one so young. To see him up on the stage with a total command of his audience you’d think he’d been doing it for 20 years. This young man is gonna be a bluesrock star, you mark my words.
Joanne – well I alerted you guys on here to her debut album a couple of months back – an album which surprised me – real quality – one of those you can leave in your car or CD player for weeks and not tire of. She’s my Bluesrock heroine too!  I’m kind of upset you enjoyed her so much, as I was due to see her play near me last week but she cancelled due to illness. I think my next chance to see this “Hurricane” (a good word to sum her up Eva) is to catch her supporting Johnny Winter next month.
My first Blues Caravan experience was the line-up with Aynsley Lister, Ian Parker, and Erja Lyytenen, so I know all about those high heels. She needs them too – she’s tiny! smile
I remember her playing mostly great slide guitar – her speciality – and she fitted in really well with Aynsley and Ian, but I will admit, I’ve not really follwed her music since.

I really love the Blues Caravan tours. It’s clear that the artists also enjoy them too. The interaction between them when they are all on stage together can be mesmerising. Putting three very talented guitarists up there at the same time leads to some great sessions – they all seen to push each other just that little bit further, and are clearly having lots of fun  - it kinda rubs off on the audience too.

Bad news for me is that there are no UK dates as yet for this current line-up. sad

I live in hope.

Ian

Please be in no doubt that this is the REAL ME! Beware imposters........................

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Ian,
I am sure you know already but Joanne has her own show at the Robin on the 25th November. The last couple of gigs I went to in this area were sold out.

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Hi Eva

That's a great review Eva. I'm glad the evening met, and exceeded your expectations! I love your enthusiasm when I read them too.   I remember the days it was just Tripsy and myself had our open conversations on Oli, great to see that so many of you are enjoying his work now.  Seeing him live is really special, he is learning all the time and I do think while we do have quite a few young male guitar players in the UK, he has possibly the greatest potential to really make a big breakthough. As for Joanne she is my blues rock heroine too!  She's not toured this part of the UK yet, but I've been nagging her to come up this way. A Joe and Jo duet would be a superb idea, but more importantly as Michael says, these two would make superb opening acts for Joe! smile

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Mike, I´m sorry I opened a new topic about this - just when I wanted to go to sleep yesterday night I thought "Oh Sh*t, there already IS a topic about the Bluescaravan" ... Forum Fauxpas! wink
Of course I remembered you calling Erja a "wedding act" as soon as she hit the stage... and I could see why you called her that. Unfair? Maybe ... lol But I´m sure that I´m going to follow Jo´s and Oli´s carrer from now on, whilst I don´t think I´ll keep track of Erja´s work. Btw - Joanne said she´ll be back to Germany in October, I´ll be there for sure - maybe we´re going to meet at one of her shows!

Ian, you´re so right about her album ... I only listened twice up to now, but I´m already sure that this one is going to stay in my Cd Player for quite a while. Maybe we should bring your original thread about her back to life - I feel like everyone who likes Joe should at least give it a listen. wink

And praise to Duncan and Tripsy for bringing our attention to all these great young bands ...!

Eva

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Thanks for the review Eva. I'm so glad that you enjoyed Oli and Jo and Erja's high heels tongue . I haven't seen the Blues Caravan thing but it sounds like a lot of fun for performers and audience alike.
I saw Jo a few years ago and was very impressed then but judging by her great album she has really improved. I like the way she describes herself as the love child of SRV and Dusty Springfield (hope that's right) it's certainly a very suitable description. I really hope to see her soon, finances permitting.
As for Oli, well he's just the Bee's knees for me, he really is the whole package and like Duncan I'm thrilled that more people are enjoying his music, the word is definitely spreading. It's a pity you didn't see Oli with Fred and Simon because they really are a fantastic unit. I hope they stay together for a long while yet. Looking forward to their October tour.
Did you take any vids Eva?

Re: Girlpower and Oli

Unfortunately the venue doesn´t allow videotaping, but there are some videos on youtube from Febuary:

Joanne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDIYn6pIxQI
Oli: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cZ72CfZ … re=related
all three together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQagi8oP … re=related

The three of them really interacted great with each other and it did look like a lot of fun ...

Re: Girlpower and Oli

No apologies necessary Eva. I can't even find old threads and while I'm looking end up finding something else and forgetting what I was searching for in the first place!

I think its better sometimes that these things are restarted anyway. I look at some of the threads with, say, 10 pages already and think, well, maybe there is nothing new to see or say.

Like you both Oli and Joanne are fully on my radar as are Aynley Lister and maybe, after next week Ian Parker. Thats all down to this forum and the new tips just keep on coming.

Sadly, that won't include Erja, although the high heels had me wavering for a bit. I just didn't rate Finlands answer to Bonnie Raitt.

Hiya Eva
I totally agree with you about Oli Brown as i met him last year and what a nice guy he is as he came to talk to the audience during a Walter Trout show and his playing is incredible and when he jammed with Walter Trout it was fantastic to watch, as for Joanne Shaw Taylor well what can you say she is a demon player and is one of the new breed of British ladies who are now shining thru just like Erja Lyytinen as I have played them both on my Blues show as well as Lucy Zirins and also Ana Popovic . Well that's all for now ,keep on rocking those blues.
