Topic: Sell me on the Jub

I have a pristine 1987 JCM800 2204.  Aside from the obvious power scaling difference, what makes the Jubilee stand out?  Are there significant schematic differences, materials used, etc?  The Jubs I have heard sound great,  my JCM800 sounds pretty good.  Wonder if there are simple mods for the 2204 to get it into the ballpark,  or if I should add the Jub to the bank breaking GAS list...along with all the other things I can't afford big_smile

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Re: Sell me on the Jub

I would keep the 2204 because with time they will become collectable in their own right.  The Jubilee is different than a JCM 800 in that it does have the half power scaling feature and functions more like a 2 channel amplifier.  The Jubilee also has a solid state clipping diode section that operates in a similar fashion as putting an overdrive pedal in front of the amp.  I would say that the Jubilee's also have more gain on tap.  A lot of guys drool over Slash's Appetite for Destruction tone but don't realize that he cut most of the album with a JCM 800, NOT a Jubilee!  Some affordable alternatives include the Slash 2555 clean examples can be found for around $1500.  Ceriatone now offers a Jubilee "clone" with some additional features with more of a plexi look for far less than a real Jubilee.  Joe has commented before on how an Engl Ritchie Blackmore surprisingly captures most of what he loves about the Silver Jubilee.  These can be had for relative peanuts compared to clean 2555's.  I say you only live once and life is too short to not be happy with your tone!  I personally would love to have a Ceriatone 2555 with a custom white plexi cabinet to interchange with my lately unreliable JCM 2000...Nik's stuff is topnotch www.ceriatone.com  Good luck man, still hard to top an original 2204 for rock stuff! smile

Re: Sell me on the Jub

Appetite wasnt a JCM 800, it was a modded JTM (i think it was JTM anyway) it was a rental that he could never get back so never recorded with it again. He used a JCM800 for almost all of the Illusions albums. And the jubilee was for the tour. Even now he doesn't record with the jubilee much. Its in his live rig with a VM in parallel for his dirty sound.

Re: Sell me on the Jub

I agrre with stratpaulguy if you can afford to get a ceriatone jubilee go for it but keep your jcm800 until you are sure the jubille is for you.
The jubilee is basically a jcm 800 voiced slightly darker so that when the clipping diodes
(essentially a built in distortion box) come in they dont make the amp as bright.
I personally love the fat distortion from the jubilee which is very organic sounding and makes each guitar sound different single coils sound great with this amp.
but not every one loves this amp so you have to try it for yourself.

Re: Sell me on the Jub

From what I heard, the effects loop in the silver jub is what separates it from the rest.

Re: Sell me on the Jub

Hold on all y'all...I am keeping the 800 for sure just thinkin' of addin' the Jub.  True gear acquisition syndrome...not rotation syndrome lol...I was wondering if I could do a simple mod to the 800 and check out the Jub, wishful thinkin' really. Thanks for all the great info...Right now I am thinkin' (or re-thinking) the combo 1x12 Jub for a kick butt small club portable unit, worth it?  I could probably afford to throw a good ev in that too.  I am not a huge fan of open back amps or cabs but I could still hook it up to a 4x12 when needed. One up from a down economy is all the prices are down too, if you can afford to buy...now is the time.  Anyone have an idea what a good price is for the 1x12 combo unit?

Re: Sell me on the Jub

There are actually quite a few Jubilee combo amps on Ebay right now.  Most are asking for around $1200, which is about what people will pay for them.  I'd say $1000 is a good price, and $1200 being fair.  Anything more than that and I'd seriously consider getting a brand new Ceriatone Jubilee in whatever form you want.  Are you planning to blend amplifiers ala Joe or using them in mono?  If you plan to use a stereo amplifier rig similar to Joe's I would recommend trying to match your wattage by getting the 2550 model Jubilee.  If you give up interest in the Jubilee I would recommend trying out the 2266 Marshall Vintage Modern.  I really think that would be a great compliment to your 2204 because of the heavy midrange that the 2266 has to fit between the great lows and highs of the 2204.  Not to mention it's an entirely different flavor of Marshall with those KT66's in there (more of an old Blackmore, Clapton, Hendrix sound).  Good luck man amp GAS is one of the hardest to pass.

Re: Sell me on the Jub

Having a combo amp for small gigs and running a 4x12 when needed is a good method. That's what I do. lol

Re: Sell me on the Jub

Definitely blending the tones...right now I am using my framptone to blend....
'81 JCM 800 2203 w 6550s...this is my "metal sound" run thru a 1960B (JCM800 also w/gt1275s)
'87 JCM 800 2204 w EL34s...this is my blues or rock tone (straight into the amp) run thru another 1960B (jcm 800 also w gt1275s)
'77 F*nder twin reverb head...this is my clean tone run thru a f*nder 4x12 w gt1275s

I have pretty much always run two half stacks....this is my first time running three and WOW what a difference. The clean sound just under the distortion is awesome, adds a lot of articulation.

So...this system is HUGE (sounding and to lug around)  I was thinking of putting together a combo version..."new" Jubilee, an 18watt Marshall TMB (trinity kit w merc mags I am building now) and some f*nderish thang (or maybe a new cab for my '77).

other amps
.5watt guytronix w merc mags
Epi valve jr.
Epi valve jr kit (with point to point board and merc mags...another unfinished project)
Marshall lead 12 (solid state)

we won't even get into guitars and pedals:)

Re: Sell me on the Jub

I Had 81 jcm 800 vertical inputs ,el34s a total beast of an amp
but waay too loud  , needed a distortion box for gigable levels

the jube has the same sound but has a better pre-amp
kinda similar too the later jcm800s but better.

if you like joes lead tone on ANDY then the jubes for you
if you dont like you can always sell it.

Re: Sell me on the Jub

I'm in...2554.  I needed a portable unit.  Can't wait to hear it and try it in the system (in place of the 2204).  I'll post here after I get it. cool

COOL.
A word of warning in my experience the jube sounded
terrible thro G12T75s seemed to bring the worst out in
in the amp v30s are better evm12L BEST. I almost gave
up with the jube until I got rid of the g12t75s
            greenbacks sound good as well.

I asked Nik about the 2555 and he said they had them no problem.
