Topic: Alvin Youngblood Hart

Anyone seen him live, I caught him on the Paul jones show sometime back and he was impressive, lovely tone. Been waiting for him to come to the and he is doing a Eurpope tour but only one date in the UK and that is wales. So is he worth traveling for?

Re: Alvin Youngblood Hart

The dude is real talented, he hails from Oakland and moved to Memphis years back....below is my favorite song off his album from a few years back "In my time of dying" from his album"Motivational Speaker" ....go see him for sure, and let me know what you think

Re: Alvin Youngblood Hart

Ahh Alvin.  I love love love Alvin.  Both as a musician, and as a dude.

I was the president of the Great Northern Blues Society for a long time, and I think Alvin lead to my demise.

We had an annual show, a big one day festival.  I booked Alvin to headline one year.  It was awesome.  We had people come from Chicago to see him, and we are in Wausau, Wi.  That is like 5 hours.

Anyway, the old blues crowd really really hated Alvins progressive sound.

And oddly enough, that was the last GNBS event I was president for.

Alivin played a gig in Perth, Scotland last year, but I missed it as I was at a wedding in Ireland.
I'd say go and she him if it does not take you too long to travel there.

Nice link!

Thought Alvin was great but was knocked out by Audley Freed's playing. A little checking on Wikipedia tells me Audley Freed was with The Black Crowes. I've got Southern Harmony...  and Amorica and he's not playing on those. So was he later?

Looked on Amazon UK for Alvin's "Motivational Speaker" which has In My Time Of Dying on it but it's out of stock sad

Re: Alvin Youngblood Hart

I've been waiting years for him to release a new album, Motivational Speaker was brilliant, but it's been 4 years, anyone know why the delay between albums?
I've had the chance to see him, but it has always been a good few hundred miles away so haven't risked it yet-as I'm not so sure about some of his more country numbers, would definitely see him if he's within a couple of hours mind you.

Re: Alvin Youngblood Hart

i saw him in march here in germany, but it was not what i like. i went away after 6 songs. i expected much more when i read the critics before the show.
well, not every concert can be a highlight.................and maybe you like what he is doing. that was only my experience with him.

You wrote that back in March Martin so I'm not sure if you've seen him since (or even decided not to) but he's on in Oxford on 24th August at The Famous Monday Blues

I was thinking of going if I can manage it. I've never been to that venue even though it's pretty close to me and it was recommended by Eldo56 when I met him at CSB recently - cheers Simon smile

If you liked Audley Freed's playing , you should check out his work with Cry Of Love, especially the album Brother.

Re: Alvin Youngblood Hart

Seen him many times. Criminally under-appreciated. I think he gets pigeonholed into being just some retro Robert Johnson guy (which isn't a bad thing ,RJ I mean) OR just some blues guy.........But he's so much more than that . He's a straight up rocker man! And his knowledge of guitars, amp, etc.  You know he repairs/builds tube amps ,pedals too. I have talked with him for hours about that stuff on a couple occasions
Did anybody see the article he wrote for Fretboard Journal back in the Summer? awesome

I heard the Paul Jones show on the net. I believe this  song was from that session but not included on the program

I got to see JoB Cain,as that band was known. What a cool lineup that was .I talked with AYH at those shows .I thought it was cool that he took on the role ,more or  less,as lead singer of that band to allow Audley to have his voice, that aweswome guitar ! (Something he wasn't allowed in The Black Crowes)

I wish there were some better vids of AYH out there ,but I dig these nonetheless .I've tried to buy that SG Special from him ,but he wouldn't budge ,saying those were the best p-90s he ever heard
