Susan,

I'm now in the know and Davy told me that he plans to put on a private performance in your own backyard for You and Ken. He said he'll call you in the next few days to schedule a date, so make sure you answer the phone when he calls as Davy hates to leave voice mails.

Oh, one more thing, he did ask whether you'd prefer his solo act or the entire band? wink tongue lol

Thanks Roy, but I don't think I'll hold my breath.  hmm

I guess one of the reasons it bugged  me is the fact that he doesn't ever play Central Florida(that I know of), so what a great opportunity it was for us to see him.  Anyway, it's all water under the bridge now.  I still have alot to look forward to.  I will be seeing Joe and Derek AND for the first time, I will be meeting a lot of street teamers that I've wanted to meet for a long time.  So, it's all good. cool

Plus, I'm going to the Wanee Festival this weekend.  Will be seeing Derek there too along with a tremendous cast of artists.  With that coming up, it's hard to be too upset about much of anything.  wink

Still, I'll be interested in seeing who replaces Davy. hmm

Susan,

I'll see Davy June 30th at Summerfest and I will make a note to tell him that he must play Central Florida just for you. No kidding, I will do that! smile

Sure wish I could be joining all of you at this Festival. It truly sounds like a great time filled with great people. As a metter of fact, Michael was trying to bend my ear about going and then he would too. Unfortunately, I can't take an unscheduled day off of work during August otherwise, I would be there. I hope you all have a blast and please, have a cold one for me!! wink

Re: Hot August Blues Festival

Jane, I meant I had been impressed with the general organization of the fest... the line-up, the price, the nice website, the ease of buying tickets and low service fees, etc... and yes even the location seemed pleasant enough, even though I've never specifically been at this park, I don't think.

As for them contacting us... I had bought my tickets online and printed them at home, so first of all they should have my email address from that.  Second, there's a place on their website (on the left side) to sign up for their email list to "get updates emailed to you", which I've done twice (while doing it the other day, I remembered doing it before).  I had done the same on the Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest's site, and they'd sent me emails informing me of both The Animals cancelling and Blood Sweat & Tears taking their place.  I have yet to receive anything from HAB.  And third, for people like Jane who aren't in their system, they have a News page on their site, which finally was updated today.  It doesn't say anything they didn't know a couple days ago (considering the band line-up part had been updated a couple days ago), and I'm guessing way before that even, but I personally think they wanted to put a little cushion between the early-bird deadline and their news post.  I notice they remembered to post on 5/28 reminding us the early bird deadline was approaching.  I gotta be honest, from a business perspective, and depending on how ticket sales were going, I might've made the same decision in their shoes... but it's still a little slimy.  Anyway, here's what the News page now says:

Line-Up Change
Jun 3, 2009

A tour schedule change has resulted in the cancellation of Davy Knowles & Back Door Slams appearance at the 2009 Hot August Blues & Roots Festival. Although unfortunate, this opening in the line-up has afforded Hot August Blues & Roots the opportunity to add Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, recently nominated for the 2009 Americana Music Awards in the category of Best Album.

This is the first artist cancellation in the 17 year history of the Hot August Blues & Roots Festival and while we are disappointed by the cancellation from Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam, we are extremely excited to welcome Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and we are very confident that all Hot August Blues & Roots guests will undoubtedly enjoy another incredible day of music at this years festival.

2009 Hot August Blues & Roots Festival Line-Up:

The Derek Trucks Band
Joe Bonamassa
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Batala All Women Percussion Band
Chopteeth AfroFunk Big Band
Old Man Brown

Well anyway, at this point, I'm looking forward to checking out this replacement band, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit... I still haven't even taken the time to sample them online, but I will then.

And I still don't blame Davy one bit for the decision that was made.  It's not like he had committed to opening a whole tour with one band and then pulled out because a better touring opportunity popped up... we're talking 2 relatively minor dates he cancelled.  I feel it would be selfish of me to get pissed about MY show, when this is clearly a big opportunity for his budding career.  Also, I'm betting he does do something to make it up to the areas where he had to cancel.

Re: Hot August Blues Festival

I tried very hard to get Nothin' But Trouble added. They were told the back up band has promised to sell a thousand tickets!!! NEVER heard of them. It will be interesting! Cathy

Re: Hot August Blues Festival

Well, I am certainly disappointed that Davy & Co. will not be gracing us with their presence as it would have been a pretty awesome trifecta....but life goes on.  I'm more disappointed for the several fans who made cross-country travel plans with this lineup in mind as I will only need to drive a bit more than an hour to get to this show.  Lisa and Susan and Ken,  us Marylanders will do our best to make sure your experience rocks anyways.

I'm not 100% sure about this but I believe Jason Isbell used to be in a band some of you may have heard of or even like called Drive-By Truckers.   I know at least one rabid fan who enjoys a lot of the same sort of music I do (i.e., Allman Bros, Mule, etc).  I don't really know anything by them but they seem to have a large fanbase.

Here's a Joe tie-in....a link to a YouTube video entitled "The Day John Henry Died".    As this is an acoustic performance, I wouldn't think it would be representative of the show we should expect.

Re: Hot August Blues Festival

I sent Davy a message letting him know how disappointed I was that he canceled to play at the HAB. I also commented that I hope this wouldn't become habit. He's now aware that people made travel and lodging arrangements to see him, people traveling from across the country and even coming from other countries. sad

Here's Davys reply to me:

I'm disappointed too... I was looking forward not only to playing there but also to check out the other bands playing, it looks like an amazing line-up. Canceling is something I HATE, and the feeling of disappointing people is just awful. You have my word that it will never become a habit, and that I shall make it up somehow.

Sorry to disappoint, and my humblest apologies
Davy

Regardless I'm still looking forward to the festival and getting to meet y'all. We're gonna have a blast!!
Safe travels please!

I have discovered that Sonny Landreth is playing not a million miles away in Pennsylvania on the previous night, Aug. 14 - not that we could go - unless most or all of the Bonabodies arriving chez Cathy can arrange to arrive a day or two earlier. big_smile

If so, we could have ourselves an honest to goodness US Mimi tour - Sonny, Joe and the Goddess, all on one (long) weekend! cool cool

Add Robben Ford in Sellersville PA on the 14th as well. That and Joe playing at Penn's Peak? WOW. All on the same night!

BTW check Robben's tour page; he's got shows booked at the Ram's Head and the Birchmere soon after HAB if anyone will be staying for a long weekend. http://www.robbenford.com/RobbenFordMain.html

Fantastic news George! Three weeks from today we'll be getting one MAJOR blues fix! cool

300 miles to Cockeysville, a full tank of gas, CD player loaded with Joe tunes and I'll be wearing sunglasses. Or something like that...
