Re: Blackberry Smoke (keepin' Southern Rock Alive!!!)

Last night I was immensely pleased when Joe mentioned he was digging BlackBerry Smoke lately! Very cool indeed!!

A little redneck hillbilly hootenanny jammin' is good for the soul.

Stay safe out there tonight y'all! Happy New Year!

I mean if you want southern rock go listen to shooter jennings, or cross canadien ragweed.

I downloaded their cd "Bad Luck Ain't No Crime" and their newer EP "Little Piece of Dixie" on iTunes yesterday and have listened to them and some Youtube stuff of theirs quite a bit over the last couple of days.  I especially like the 4 tunes on the EP and the production sounds much better than the full cd (which I am only lukewarm on).  I dig 'em quite a bit as a good time rock and roll band and like their sound much better than Cross Canadian Ragweed (I listened to their cd a couple of times and really didn't care for it).  BB Smoke's singer is really good too.  Not at all in Joe's league, but I'd like to hear what they sound like with the Kevin Shirley treatment.

Blackberry Smoke played the Scandanavia Corn Roast in Scandanavia Wi last Saturday. 3 sets plus encore. Smokin'!!!!! Just about every song I could want to hear from them plus lots of great covers (Stones -Can't You Hear Me Knockin', Little Feat - Willin', Skynyrd - Sweet home Alabama, etc). They have added a keyboardist which fills in the sound great and their roadie tony sits in on harmonica at times. Great show (over 3 hours of music).

Re: Blackberry Smoke (keepin' Southern Rock Alive!!!)

some of the Youtube clips are ok, - "Up in Smoke" has a great intro. As has been said, - Southern Rock/Boogie is good easy on the ear fun, - but a trawl on iTunes turned up only Country stuff, - and pretty weak country at that, - no thanks.... - although nothing wrong with a bit of Hayseed Dixie from time to time...

Not sure why people get the ar5e with Southern Boogie, - one of the best live acts that I have ever seen, - Blackfoot, many many years ago when Ricky Medlocke still had a full head of hair. big_smile And whatever became of Ram Jam???

Not sure what is on I-Tunes. They put out a Country Honkey Tonk EP with humorous songs about a year ago and a bluegrass Ep about 2 years ago. They also have 2 rock CD's out but this is a band that has not been captured correctly on cd yet. Best to check out the Walmart (yeah I know Walmart don't need to hear it) exclusive 6 track downlaod "Absolutely Live in '08".

You cannot tell me that Blackberry Smoke is more than 2 steps above a southern rock tribute band.  It is like they robbed the Van Zandt family closet, stole some southern iconography, dove deep into the outlaw part of waylon jennings, listened to some beatles records and came out with the most marketable part they could find for a mid level band.

What? I Southern Rock Band dressing and sounding like a Southern Rock Band? Blasphemous! What are they thinking?

Next thing you'll tell me is that the 80's hair bands looked and sounded alike. God knows that wouldn't work! lol
