To my ears, they did sound in the same ball park but the '59 uses a Alnico V and sound a little more powerful while the BB's use a Alnico 2 and sound a bit 'mellower'.

I have a friend of mine who spent, like $4000 on 2 original PAF's and you know what he wound up replacing them with? Burstbuckers... and loves them. BTW: The PAF's were verified as coming out of a '59-'61 GT. Myself, I think they're over-rated, having been actually able to hear and compare the two. Before that, I never posted any comment...... for I had no basis of reference.
