What camera and lens are you using Geoff?
Just a Canon EOS 400D (Rebel ST I think it's called in the US) with a Sigma 18-200 AF f3.5 - 6.3 DC OS with optical stabilisation and no flash. Settings to manual.

Nice clear shots, be intersting what I can come up from the front row at the Civic Hall. Ill be using a Nikon 18-200 and 50mm prime.
Digging a bit further, I guess you keep the aperture wide open but what shutter speed do you use?

ISO set to 800, widest aperture and the fastest speed I can get, anything from 15th to 60th or better, just slightly underexposed. Later model cameras should alow you to set the ISO even higher and give you a better chance.
