Topic: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Geoff and I just got home from the concert at Academy One in Manchester and I have to say "Joe - YOU ARE THE MAN!!!"  Thank you so much for coming all the way back from Toulouse to give us such a fantastic night at the Academy we did appreciate all the effort you and Carmine; Bogie; Rick; Dave; Aaron and the rest of the entourage went to for all the fans.  Got to mention the new footwear too!!  It was a great night and yet again you all found the time to meet and greet despite the rain.  Thank you.

Rock on and keep the faith!!

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Just got back myself. About a third of the way through, it was like Joe had been struck by lightning.  Man he was on fire, the acoustic solo was blinding and IMHO better than the one at the NEC, which I would not have though possible. Joe was playing the crowd somewhat and seemed to be having fun which went down very well indeed. Spell binding. If anyone has video of the acoustic session please post as it is a legendary performance and needs to be shared.
Thanks for making the trip back Joe you must have been knackered (not sure how that translates;))
Roll on the RAH:)

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Michael, sorry mate! you missed a belter - just to make you feel really bad! Only 'cos I'm so jealous of the number of gigs you've been to!

Arrived uber early (note the new word in my vocabulary - thanks Joe) as I was working in Manchester. Sue & I went for a Chinese Buffet meal and I got changed out of my suit, shirt and tie into more acceptable jeans and T shirt in the restaurant gents toilet before going to the venue. Then parked up in the rain (it's Manchester for God's sake) There were a couple of tour buses around the side, but wasn't sure whether Joe would be using one for the hop over to the UK for just one gig. When we arrived the boys were sound checking, seemed rude to barge in so went back to the dry of the car for a while. Then Aaron came out for a smoke, so strolled over for a chat. Man he seemed knackered. He said that they were all feeling pretty done in, adding that they had only brought the essential bits like the guitars, theramin, screens and cymbals - they even left the carpets behind - jeez they WERE travelling light! Then Bogie popped out, all wrapped up, cheerful as ever and chatted briefly before heading off for a bite to eat. Joined a few Bonavirgins who must have heard that you need to queue early to get at the front at a Joe gig at about 5.30pm and chatted away the time until the queue got longer. Pete, who was next to me at Birmingham showed up and announced that he had already sorted his photo pass out and that he'd introduce me to the guy that got him his. Good job I took Rachael's e-mail, as yet again, I wasn't on the photo pass list! Not to worry, the e-mail saved the day and we were let in a couple of minutes early to set up. Press pit users only got the first three songs, so we opted to pitch up in our usual spot front & centre. It was F*&%$*&g freezing, as super cooled air was being blown out from under the stage so we had to keep our coats on all night - honestly, it got no better through the gig!

The support band of three local guys (Mike Sweeney, who used to be in the Salford Jets years ago) were quite entertaining. Obviously they expected the place to be half empty, with about six people at the front and the rest at the bar - I think they were quite blown away with 2300 eager Joe fans giving them a good reception. Tell you what, for 61, the lead singer was lean and fit for his age!

Dave had some heartstopping moments setting up the borrowed PA, but like the star that he is, got the show on the road. Dave, Aaron and the rest of the crew deserve a whole heap of credit for pulling this show out of the bag - it can't have been easy. Joe's setup was all hired. Twin Marshall Silver Jubilees (I think) and Marshall speaker cabs, but the screens were there, which add so much to Joe's signature sound. We needn't have worried about the borrowed gear, the sound was awesome - congratulations, knowing how precise Joe is about his sound, I can tell you that what we were hearing was absolutely awesome.

After opening with Ballad of John Henry, Joe ripped through his set and was clearly enjoying himself, working the audience from side to side. Dave even managed to get an extension on Joe's guitar lead, to give him more scope (nautical term) Often wonder why Joe still doesn't use a radio transmitter??? Maybe he'll let us know?? The Great Flood was a great addition to the show, which he didn't play at Birmingham (probably because he was feeling ill) The Sloe Gin opening once again had tears in my eyes. The roof was slowly but surely getting lifted off the hall and by the end of the night, the many Bonavirgins had picked their jaws off the floor and were converted. I spoke with many after the gig as we waited to see the boys, all were absolutely dumbfounded by Joe's skills and the quality of the sound and the relentless set. As usual Joe and the boys were gracious in their approach to the fans that greeted them after the show, before jumping into the back of their Ford Transit - well almost! and heading for Gatwick and an early flight to Spain.

Thanks to everyone on the tour that made last night happen, especially to Bogie, Joe, Carmine, Rick, Dave, Aaron, Warren and the rest of the crew. Sorry about the MAnchester weather!

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

I echo those sentiments, last night was truly awesome. At Crewe in February, i think Joe was feeling about 50% because of illness. Last week at the NEC, I thought I'd had a 100% Joe experience and was blown away, although Joe was ill then too, and then last night happened!!!!

It was by far and away the best of the three times I've seen Joe and the guys. The sound was awesome, the vibe from the crowd was electric brewing into fever pitch by the end, Joe looked relaxed and in fine spirits, and in a great mood (some humorous banter with the crowd which was great), and the rest of the gang fed off that producing a simply sublime and raw performance!!! Loved hearing another track off the album "The Great Flood" as well, as an added bonus too. Had to laugh as well when Joe used the theramin briefly during "Woke Up Dreaming"......always full of surprises...... smile
Highlights for me again though were Sloe Gin, which was intense, and Just Got Paid which just rocked the hell out of the place.....brilliant!!!

During the course of the gig, I kept looking behind me at my best friend's (Bonavirgin) face.....and it was a picture every time.....jaw was permanently on the floor!! After seeing the DVDs and listening to my albums.....he finally got the real deal in front of him, and was totally blown away by the whole thing, which was especially joyful to me, knowing how i was back in February when I had my Bonabaptism!!

All in all a wonderful evening, despite a minor car accident and getting lost around the streets of Manchester... smile

I'd also like to thank Joe, Carmine, Bogie, Rick, Dave, Aaron, and the rest of the crew for coming back and giving us one hell of a show. We really appreciated it.......thanks guys!!!!!

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Wow, if these guys don´t love their fans, then nobody does!!

It´s great to hear that you all had such a great night after the disappointment of the cancelled show last week - sounds like another magic night! I had to laugh about the expressions on the faces of those who haven´t seen him before - I have seen these looks myself pretty often now ... and hopefully I will also see it on my two friends´ faces who come to Nürnberg with me. smile

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us! smile

Eva

P.S.: Geoff, congratiolations to the new word - uber ..... I laughed my a** off the first time I heard it from an American exchange student (I tried to teach him German for a year). He said it´s probably a crippled form of the German word "über" .... lol

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Last night's show was absolute magic!!
We didn't get to the venue til nearly seven o'clock and the Queue was about half a mile long! The weather was miserable but everyone was in high spirits in anticipation of what lay ahead.
I didn't know the Academy 1 was so big....2300 people of all ages, Joe was thrilled to see so many there and mentioned that the first gig he played in Manchester was to about 100 people. That must have been a good night.
Highlights for me were So Many Roads, Sloe Gin, The Great Flood off the new album, Just Got Paid which truly rocked with a nice touch of the theramin too. great to hear Your Funeral, My Trial too.
Thanks a million Joe, Carmine, Rick and Bogie and your support crew for making the trek back to the UK. We really appreciate it.

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

I'm so glad you all got to see the show after it got cancelled.  Sounds like a blast.  And what a star Joe is!  I would so much like to see his travel itinerary for that little jaunt from France to Manchester in one day.  Wouldn't fancy trying it myself but just goes to show how much Joe cares for his fans and how he doesnt want to disappoint them or renege on promises.

He's learnt a new English slang word - knackered - and I bet he's feeling a bit of that right now!

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Woke up dreaming I’d met Joe for the first time last night, but it wasn’t a dream… it was TRUE! big_smile big_smile

Firstly, I’d like to add my thanks to Joe, Carmine, Rick, Bogie & the crew for their Herculean feat of rearranging the Manchester gig, we appreciate it so much! Hopefully the warmth of the reception and appreciation of the fans came across in bucket-loads and made all their efforts worthwhile. I’d also echo comments about the sound quality using the ‘hired kit’, it was fantastic!

Not sure where to start with a review of the gig without using every superlative known to man! Joe was simply on fire and seemed to be having a ball, much to the delight of the crowd. Joe’s confidence seems to have grown massively in this past year and he seems so much more comfortable on stage and in interacting with the audience and the band. As for his playing… well it just gets better and better, although how that’s possible I don’t know.

Loved the new songs and love the way Joe keeps changing and evolving the old songs which never seem to go stale. Highlights are impossible to pick as there are so many… Sloe Gin (such strong emotion), Mountain Time (always transports me), Just Got Paid.. and blew the roof off Manchester Academy 1!! and Asking Around for You (which makes me cry… particularly the end).

We weren't able to meet up with any of the forum members prior to the show. After the gig I bumped into Tripsy in the ladies’ loos but we were cut short (cut, not caught!) by venue staff herding us out into the cold, damp Manchester night. Do they train them like sheep dogs? wink

Whilst most sensible folk headed off for a drink before coming back to the venue, 'Just John' and I hung around outside chatting to some of the crew and Paul (Joe’s agency tour support driver) who is such a great & friendly guy!  Paul, if you ever read this, John sends a huge thanks for your generosity wink  Oh and sorry for messing up the “tour bus” window by writing “We (heart) Joe” on it big_smile tongue

Eventually the Bonabuddies returned and members of the band came out. Managed to say hi to Carmine who was just so warm and friendly smile although I didn’t get chance to tell him that I’d seen him hiding behind a stack of cabinets trying to put Rick off during his keyboard solo with various gestures, ahem! wink

Then Joe emerged and generously spent time, despite the awful weather, meeting and greeting fans old and new. I got to say hi <excited sqeak> and Joe kindly autographed my ticket (still kicking myself for not taking CD covers!!)  I’m still on cloud 9 and have no idea where my socks have been blown to. I really must stop wearing them to Joe gigs!!

The final ‘cherry on top of the cake’ was that on the drive home Joe’s little white “tour bus” passed us on the M6. I don’t think John quite believed me when I told him so he overtook it… with me waving like crazy as we went by, though I’m sure the occupants were completely oblivious to the waving mad woman. Ah well, never mind, we’ve been on the (same) road with Joe! big_smile:D

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

This was my first JB gig and i thought he was just AWESOME

my mate now rates him better than Clapton !!!

Best moment for me was Sloe Gin which sent a shiver doen my spine - just superb

i thought it very apt when Joe greeted the audiance and thanked everyone for turning out twice in a week and then said what can we do for Manchester and the played "The Great Flood"       -      i think (not sure though) the next song was then "High Water Everywhere"
Does Joe know Manchester is famed for it's rain.

i will definatly catch Joe next time he is in the area -  can't wait

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

What a bunch of wonderful stories!! It's easy to "be" there, in my head (that may not be saying much). I'm also enjoying "first show" reports. Love the Bonavirgins!  Now you know why we all look forward to show reviews! It gets us thru to our next live show.    Cathy

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

I'd like to thank all the previous participants here for their excellent and wholly enjoyable reviews! I really enjoyed this from the top!

Oh yeah, that new Sloe Gin intro is stone cold killer classic already. *jaw wide open*

RIP Iron Man

Rock On and keep the Faith

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

What's it wth you lot ! Stop slagging off the Manchester weather please ! - I agree with Sue 'O' the cold air blowing those on the front row made it a tad nippy to say the least - however Joe and the bands performance soon warmed us up - another excellent show, the man never ceases to amaze, wonder if he will play the Apollo next - surely a must !!
Reckon he should bring back takin' the hit to start with, what do you reckon ??
Thanks to all the crew for making it happen - a great 2 days rockin@ courtesy of Paul Gilbert the previous night - if you thought Joe was awesome - then you missed a treat in Club Academy on Sunday !
Joe - Come back soon !

Libby, what a great write up! I'm afraid I'm not too good at it.
I was happy to bump into you, I missed nearly everyone that I knew who was there. It was so crowded I even lost the friends I went with for ages.
I think you're right about the staff there! I think they must have been offered extra biscuits that night!

Thanks Tripsy, it was great to bump into you too!  During the gig I kept wondering if anyone nearby was from the forum, but didn't recognise any faces.

Hopefully we can organise a proper get together in London before the RAH gig.

Re: Manchester rescheduled concert.

Hi, I attended Monday's concert and it was my first Joe Bonamassa show. I've only been into his music about 18 months or so and have the Blues Deluxe, You and Me, Sloe Gin and the latest Live album. None of these albums prepared me for what I saw on that Monday night!

Quite a few posters have commented about Joe concert newbies and jaws hitting the floor, well that is exactly how I described it to my mate Andy after the show. I am 47 years old and have seen lots of concerts and practically every great Rock guitarist save Clapton and Hendrix but I have never seen a performance like that. This was no ordinary experience for me, I was absolutely transfixed during the whole performance and can remember actually shaking my head at times because I just couldnt believe what I was seeing. Without want to appear to be crude, the only way i can describe it is that I almost vomited my heart at one point! I thought my chest was going to explode and believe me I was totally drug free.

I still dont know how to describe Monday night adequately. Normally I would be wary of gigs by guitar virtuosos (I saw Zappa in 77 or 78 in Manchester and it felt like a 3 hour noise guitar solo) but this just transcended all my preconceptions. People actually looked shell-shocked leaving the gig afterwards.

WOW!!!!!!!!
