The gig was fantastic !!
On the way out my son said it was the best ever and he's seen Joe now about 4 times. I can agree it was pretty cool.

I can't give you the set list in order or in full, as I was enjoying it too much to note them down and in an amazing moment of generosity on my part (ahem wink) I gave away the set list (Carmines I think) which one of the road crew gave me after the gig to a very young boy who was watching the crew put the gear away with his dad. Another very young fan I think smile

I'm sure others will be able to give a more detailed review of the music, so a more general feel from me of the whole day.

We went to the whole day and was at the exhibition at about 10.30am. We have been going to Music Live every year for a few years now and enjoy a long and tiring day. Tiring on the feet and the ears !!

There was a good Gibson stand and they even provided a left handed SG to play along with all the other goodies (I played it in the morning and when I had another go later in the afternoon, two of the knobs were missing. Assuming these were taken by people I thought that was pretty poor). Thank you Gibson. There was a small stage where two guys played some excellent stuff - one demonstrating the new robot guitar. There was a JB Les Paul on the wall - pride of place in the centre of a display of five guitars - but at the back of the stage out of reach.
I did expect Joe to make an appearance at the Gibson stand and I had taken my tab book for him to sign for me, but no such luck.

The gig was advertised to start at 5.30pm and by 4.30 there was already a queue forming - Geoff, Sue and Michael at the front.
We had bought an amp at the show so took it to the car and when we got back and after a quick look again at the goodies at the show we went to join the now much bigger queue.

There was some kind of problem and the doors didn't open until about 6.30pm. The huge queue was now very restless. But at last we were allowed inside the hall where Joe was to play. Then for no aparrent reason, we had a very long wait for the support band to play. People were very restless. Slow clapping broke out every so often and then we had the most amazing funny/pathetic/stupid anouncement I have ever heard at a gig. "If there are any chairs in the hall, the show will not start"
There were 1,600 people standing close together desperately waiting for Joe and we get that !! Probably "elf 'n' safety" !! Pillocks!!

The support band FINALLY came on. Imelda May I think. A lady with a backing band including upright bass. A very low key arrival on stage - just strolled on and started to play. Very tight but not really my cup of tea. Seen it too many times before - fast rockabilly sort of stuff, plastered down quiffs and kiss curl and a drum kit comprising a snare and a cymbal. If I hadn't been walking around the exhibition for the previous 6 hours, hadn't been made to wait for so long, didn't have a by now aching back and knees and wasn't so hungry, I might have enjoyed them more. I just wanted to see Joe and take my mind off the back and knee pain.
But by the time they had finished, I had enjoyed them and the crowd gave them a loud cheer. The bass player particularly impressive for me. Imelda's Dublin accent a plus (sorry- too much detail, but I do think the Irish accent particularly nice). She could sing as well though of course smile

Then a not too long wait and there again - JOE !! The new Ballad of John Henry opening the set. Joe very lean and looking every bit the major star he now is. Couldn't really see Bogie for the heads in front and the cymbal which was disappointing as he sure does look like he enjoys every minute usually. Carmine looking like the coolest bass player on earth and Rick looking like he was enjoying it. Song after song - the time just flew by all too quickly. One of These Days, High Water Everywhere (accoustic), Bridge to Better Days, Mountain Tme, Sloe Gin, Blues Deluxe, Woke Up Dreaming, Asking Round For You (we love it when Joe sings the passage without a Mike) and probably more. Fantastic. Joe told the crowd about the RAH gig being on and it being the gig of his life - big cheer from the audience. I love it when players take time to talk to the audience.

Joe and this band are definately now major league - NO DOUBT. Maybe Joe and the guys believe this as well now with the RAH gig.

I'm just so glad the Gateshead gig is all seating................and I think I'm not the only one !!

Then drive home for midnight - takeaway pizza on the way smile

A satisfying day all round I think smile

Got to do it again on Monday.
Ah well !!

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Hi Ges thanks for the report. Sounds like you had an exhausting day! Pity Joe didn't make an appearance at the Gibson stand, probably down to the 'elf 'n' safety' pillocks not wanting to start a stampede!!
Glad to hear there were some youngsters at the show too, very kind of you to give away the set list, where was your camera though? Did they play anything else from the forthcoming album?
Can't wait for tonight's show.
Have a good rest today buddy and we'll see you in Gateshead where we can enjoy the show in comfort. It'll be my first seated Joe show, a different experience.

Tripsy smile

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Thanks for the post.... It has just served to add to my excitement. Sounds like you had a good, if tiring day. Like a child on Christmas Eve it's an early night for me, tomorrow cannot come quick enough. I feel amazed that after 25years of gigging I still get that familiar "pit or the stomach.... something goods about to happen" feeling. Are we there yet?? Meeting my Brother in the afternoon and then a steady drive to the Toon. See you all there...

(Off topic)

Cathy asked me the meaning of this today - I suggested it could be compared to that old American favorite, 'richardhead'. big_smile

Thanks for the fine write-up, Ges!

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Thanks for posting this Ges.  Sounds like Joe and the boys are on TOP FORM, even if Joe was ill.  I can't wait till Wednesday.

Bring it on!

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Ges :-) you paint a pretty accurate picture, particularly of the the concert hall proceedings.I was centre middle, and really had a damn good view, my knees feet and lower back were already in deep recession(of comfort at least), and the guy next to me was festing,Glowing, fuming in equal measure like a woodbine ;He yelled at the height of our disruption `I`ll come and get him`....I mean it was a little pathetic, but  appropriate to our feeling .`The chair`(you refer to) excuse ,was hilarious for those living in the moment...The most sophisticated musical technology available, and promoted by the best in the business, located at the NEC....village hall metality.
`Anyone like a bit of skiffle`.......This was classic humour I felt  for Imelda,But I found my self warming to their approach `Three fingers and the middle one`s for you` she sang! absolute treasure.
Joe was blinding, and can only reiterate your sentiment. `Sloe Gin` was sublime, and given the wifi problems that bugged the show, it was a memorable performace given the vibe.
1600 people went away Aching, tired, and full of good humour...looking forward to the Albert Hall where all  being well, things will not run like a village hall monkey`s tea-party.

finally I hope all those who did attened the NEC concert. had underneath it all a damn good experience I know I did.

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Once he arrived he did not fail to impress....but Joe....dont lower yourself to the inept organisation that was the NEC ever again. I too attended the Music Live event but only as a pre-cursor to the main event and so was able to be near the front of the assembling queue come 4.50pm.....we waited.....we waited a little longer.....and we waited longer still. What would it of taken to come out and advise us that there were 'issues' with the soundcheck? For an organisation the size of the NEC there was no excuse for the lack of information (or perhaps therein lies the problem...they are too big too care).
By the time we got into the hall Diana and I couldnt care about the support, our backs and legs were aching from the 2 hour stint outside! Credit where credit is due though...they tried hard and the crowd warmed to them as they show went on. Rockabilly/Skiffle...is there a difference....was and is not my scene but hey each to their own!
The chairs issue....pathetic schoolroom pleading from an announcer that sounded like he was crying!!!!!
Enter JB....
A blinding start with the ballad of John Henry and the crowd were eating out of his hand. We first saw Joe at the Morecambe Dome in February in front of about 500 people after hearing about him on Nicky Horne's Planetrock show and he blew us away....we had to have more so saw him at Liverpool Apollo in July in front of 1600 and he did the same. So Many Roads..I found myself mesmerised by the quality of the sound by four guys clearly enjoying themselves and wishing to please.
The set contained most of my favourites.....except 'If heartaches were nickels' and each time I would not be disappointed. A minor hiccup with the 'wireless' allowed JB to advise us of the RAH gig (Dont miss it, it promises to be a special event and atlast JB will be playing an arena befitting the size of star he has now become) More Heavy...no I mean HEAVY blues followed, haunting riffs, powerful drums, pulsating bass and harmonic keyboards kept the assembled masses hanging on every note. Stepping out from behind the mike to sing a verse demonstrates the confidence this guy has and again he pulled it off.
By now the queueing was a distant memory and the crowd left having feasted on some of the best sounds around.
Till the next time Joe...thanks for the memories!

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Simply an awesome show by Joe and the guys......was worth the wait, back ache and leg ache!!!

The last time I saw Joe was at Crewe in Feb. and he was feeling rough then too. I couldn't tell at all during this show though, he was seriously on fire!!!! I have to say Sloe Gin really stood out for me though, was such an intense and heartfelt version, it could have moved mountains!! Loved hearing Your Funeral live for the first time and Blues Deluxe was just sublime. Can't really add much more than has already been said, it was just a great show, and I look forward to the rescheduled Academy show whenever that is, as does my best friend who awaits his Bonabaptism!!

Thanks Joe for reminding me once again why I'm here in the first place!!! Get well soon!!

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

I was at the NEC and yes there was an incredible wait to get in with no communications from NEC as to what the hold up was. (that would have helped guys) The chairs issue I think was that some folk had snook their seats from the café into the halll? and the laughable request from a very nervous guy was to remove them! Imelda May & band I thought were brilliant considering the audience were baying for blood after the wait! Check out her guitaist Darrel Higham,  its not blues but he can nail all those rock n roll licks. We have to thank Joe’s management /agent for putting such a classy support act on. They certainly cooled everyone in readyness for slim Joe.......been off those burgers hey Joe! Joe made playing that les Paul look a piece of cake and certainly got me thinking about his signature model ( then I woke up!) I think considering the cavernous hall Joe got the best sound I’ve ever heard!! I decided to leave my revox at home so did nor tape it, drat was I sick! Sometimes I just wanna enjoy a gig without lookin over my shoulder even though I know Joe is taper friendly......oh well! Joe was sure firing on all 7 that night so too was the band.......he seemed at one with himself/guitar. Not sure about the ‘therimin’ thingie..but hey who the hell am I! Love the part in ‘Bridge to better days’ after the middle section where Joe and the band put the accents on the riff  after the vocal.......brilliant! Love it when Joe gets out the acoustic and tonight he excelled even with a dodgy lead.....no probs we understand...just dock that roadies wages lol . That’s one of the things I love about Joe is his abillity to switch to an acoustic play a different style yet with the same fire/vigour as if it were his electric guitar, priceless!! A great gig.....Thanks Joe and guys!

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Hmmm the chair thing was probably down to me. I was in the disabled section with my son and all these idiots were nicking chairs from the canteen dragging them in and pinning all the wheelchairs users in. One person did take a fall and lost 2 pints of beer. He just did not see the chair. He seemed ok if not a little pissed off at losing his beer:) My son is on a ventilator and we do need a quick exit sometimes as serious problems can happen and would need to get out into a well lit area pretty quick. I had asked these idiots to leave a small gap but they ignored me and continued to pile the chairs up. Sorry but his infuriated me and I asked the staff for the chairs to be removed. I now these folks would have simply left them there at the end for us to fight our way through. It is not very rock n roll but Alex was getting anxious about it.
Why on earth would you want to sit on seat in standing venue anyway? Alex sure wishes he was up the front!!

Get that lad to the front..........

Re: Birmingham 8 Nov 08

Oh yeah we had a blast. To be fair the venue is not really a concert venue and they did there best. We are just happy to see Joe in smaller venue as he is obviously outgrowing them. The folks were clueless and not ill meaning. Once one person had a chair they all wanted one;)

sorry to hear about that. i hope that those people were just clueless and not completely inconsiderate. i know i have done some ignorant things in the past not realizing that i was.
anyway sounds to me like no need for You to apologize. and i have thought a time or two how lucky i am to be able to get right up front.
a recent show in Baltimore i went to we had paid to get in earlier but the staff who usually are not the most pleasant did help a man in a wheelchair get his spot before they let anyone else in. they seemed to have a good system for that.
anyway i assume otherwise you and your son enjoyed the show? smile

Saturdays show sure was a blast

Joe was absolutely smoking! smile as were the guys

Really cool suit BTW Joe, and I thought that you fit it really well wink

Not sure about the support though (not really my cup of tea)

Techie problems not a biggie for the fans - seemed to bug the hell out of Joe though - always the perfectionist lol

I got an added bonus in that I managed to snag a JB LP custom inspired by for £2,*** at the music live event beforehand for my boyfriends christmas prezzie, I was so impressed

Just hope that Joe is looking after himself and getting lots of TLC from those around him

"Stellar" a word used by Joe Bonamassa (also apt as a description of the man himself cool)

MBCL
Understand the chair comments at the show now.
Hope you both enjoyed the show.

Pitty about the stupid mentality of a few.
