Topic: Mandolin experts?

Hey all,

I might be getting my father's old mandolin. It could be from the 50's or early 60's.
I looks a lot like the link below in terms of shape,
http://www.gravitystrings.com/images/Kay%20Mando.jpg

but my headstock is different. I know the link is a Kay, but I'm unsure of what mine is. The F holes in mine are not one hole, they are three, almost as if cut out using a stencil (if that makes any sense)

Inside one of the holes it is stamped FE6
Black tuning knobs, front binding around body, no fret markers, curved back.
I have digital pics if anyone wants to contact me via email about it.

Re: Mandolin experts?

Hi Nick,

Interesting shape. I have an A shaped or tear drop shaped inexpensive Rogue model. It's fun to mess with, but definitely trickier than a guitar to play. May I recommend getting your hands on some Ronnie McCoury to hear how hot a mandolin can sound.

Re: Mandolin experts?

I have the same Rogue teardrop Mandolin. I got that and the Rogue acoustic in a pack for $80 or something last christmas. The Mando needs a setup pretty bad.

Playing mandolin is easy if you know how to fret chords upside down.

Do you use your thumb much for chords?
