Topic: First Vancouver gig - long way from Ripon though

Been travelling through Asia for 4 weeks and stopped off in Vancouver for 2 days before return to Ripon. Saw Joe was making first appearance so no brainer - bought ticket. Great holiday had got even better. In doghouse with wife though.
Thought I'd put a few lines about gig for now then add more detail when I get back home e.g.photos and set-list.
Overall summary? What do you think!! First surprise was Joe had shrunk a bit, started with a Music Man then played something I'd not heard at all. Tried to have a look at the set-list but no joy. Was damned good and pretty heavy sounding. What was it? Most of time with Les Pauls for the other songs - Mountain Time great as usual and Sloe Gin even better with a relatively short guitar intro,
Worth losing the $40 I had in my pocket.
More to follow when back home.
Can't wait to see him again in UK - Gateshead at least.

That first song was probably Spike Driver Blues, to be on the new CD, due out sometime in Feb. of 2009!

Welcome to the forum! smile

A warm welcome to the Forum, oldrockfan!!  Our kind of guy, indeed!!!  Willing to lose cash AND spend serious time in the doghouse for our Joe!!!  BRAVO!!!!  Wise choice!!!

I hope you will enjoy your time here with us.  Pretty friendly folks around here who are all pretty passionate in our enthusiasm for all things Joe.  A LOT of information is here for the asking too...... AND Joe pops in and adds his two cents worth (well, priceless tidbits is more like it) from time to time.

Enjoy!!

P.S.  Oh - Spike Driver Blues???  Three Forum members have posted videos of this new song on YouTube - all great - and all slightly different.  (Of course, leave it to Joe to change it up a bit and keep it interesting).  Rhonda posted her video on YouTube (w/the Music Man) just a few days ago, and a few weeks ago, I posted another with Joe playing a Stonetree Baritone.  Meyermassa's was also with the Stonetree.  Here are the links:

ENJOY!!!  And, again, welcome to the Forum.  smile

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Re: First Vancouver gig - long way from Ripon though

Thanks for the help and links to other shows - now I know it's now Spike Driver Blues. Can't wait to hear a legit or great official bootleg version.

Hope I didn't offend anyone with the shrunk remark. He's lost a few pounds is all - who wouldn't playing like that.

In an airport lounge so time to kill.
Set list as far as I can remember;

Spike Drivers Blues (clearly didn't remenber this title)
Bridge To Better Days
So Many Roads
Mountain Time (with a Les Paul)
Another Kind Of Love
Sloe Gin (with tasty intro)
Highwater Everywhere
?? another one I don't remember the name of - Your Funeral And My Trial ??
Blues Deluxe (Les Paul again)
Woke Up Dreaming
Just Got Paid (with theramin - seems like there were a lot of Zeppelin fans in Vancouver judging by the reception to the D&C bits)
One Of These Days (Gibson slide guitar ?)
Asking Around For You

Photos not too rubbish but all from the front with the theramin straight ahead. Will try and post when back home.
Set list about right?

Couple of other observations and comments - band tight as a badgers... (not sure if that translates outside the UK), neglible talk between songs compared to the 4 gigs I've seen in the UK; wasn't me who made the "..so funky comment.." yelp or the muppet who kept talking loudly during Joes off-mike vocal at the end of AAFY. Thanks also to the lady beside me who sorted out my camera - had it in my pocket so thought I'd try some shots - they were worse than the ones I took on my mobile phone at the Leeds gig some months ago.
20 hours later I still think it was great stuff. My Les Paul will stay in its case for a while.
Bring on the UK dates.

Re: First Vancouver gig - long way from Ripon though

I'm enjoying your travel tale ORF...Glad you shared it and welcome. I can't imagine you're not itching to play. Joe would want to inspire you. Keep watching for posts about UK dates and try to meet some of the wonderful folks that post here. Being at a Joe show with other Bonamaniacs is the BEST. Now, make nice with your wife, then come back and have some fun!      Cathy

Wow, ORF, what a great ending to your holiday. A Joe show is worth a little marital dispute. It's usually easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, or something like that!
I'm sure you know how to make it up to her.

See you at Gateshead ......Tripsy smile
