Re: Progressive Rock

Hi Crossroads,
Thanks for tip on Magenta, I'm looking forward to listening.  I just got an e-mail from the venue I just saw Robben Ford at and Annie Haslam is making a guest appearance with a band there.  Tripsy had made a post about Rick Wakeman on Planet Rock, that is very cool...have you ever heard him play Joe, that would be even cooler.

I am also a big Pink Floyd fan and one of my favorite tribute bands is The Machine.

All these links to bands is great. Rocket, I didn't even think of Moody Blues as prog.  I own every one of their albums.  One thing that has happened since my son has gotten interested in prog is, he in turn has turned me on to albums I never had in my collection...some of early Genesis, Red from King Crimson and Passion Play from Tull to name a few.

Re: Progressive Rock

A little off topic, but I'm looking for a "In the Court of the Crimson King" album cover if anyone comes across one in an old record store or sees one on line.  I want surprise my son on Parents weekend at college.  He wants to mount it on dorm wall, but didn't want to take mine cause it will get messed up trying to stick it on cinderblock.  I don't even need the vinyl record, just the cover.  A big THANKS & my e-mail is on the forum.  smile

Re: Progressive Rock

I'll keep an eye out Angela...seems I saw one at a used LP store around town...Trouble is WHERE? Speaking of Annie Haslam what was that Rockola or something she sang that was just no lyrics, just inflecting her voice to a great rhythm track ... I used to just borrow the brother-in-law's Rennaisance records and I taped 'em but I lost that one...what was it off??? Incidentally, for historical purposes, there WAS actually a time when the Allman Brothers were considered "Prgressive Rock"...I kid you not. Strangely, it was Lynrd Skynrd & Atlanta Rhythm Section especially, among others being called "Southern Rock" and then VIOLA!-the Allmans were considered the "inventors" of it!

Re: Progressive Rock

I love Camel, Mountain, Tull, Floyd, RTF, Focus, Golden Earring, Lone Star, Mahogany Rush, Wishbone Ash to name a few

I'm an "after the event" listener being born in 1976 but I think that you'll agree my e-mail address says it all!

Camel!  Now there's a name you don't hear every day.

Think I need to go spin up the Snow Goose again.  I've got all of their early stuff on vinyl (yikes), but the double CD (Echoes) rarely leaves my magazine.

Re: Progressive Rock

Nice choices there vickyh31, I also love Camel. have you heard their newer stuff? "Rajaz" & "A Nod And A Wink" are great. Andy Latimer is an incredible guitar player, one of my all time favorites.

Re: Progressive Rock

I got the newer stuff but my favourite album is still Mirage I think - also rather partial to Stationary Traveller.

We also have them permanently in the 300 play CD cassette alongside Joe (of course! - every album is in there), Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc

BTW did you know that Andy is suffering from a form of leukemia and has recently had a stem cell transplant latest news:

Yes I did know about this, I wonder what is going on now? That news at their website is like 3 months old.

Angela, I DID find that King Crimson LP cover (for her son's dorm room), in good shape at a local vinyl store...They wanted far too much for it...but that was back at the start of the FALL semester...

Re: Progressive Rock

Was a big Colliseum fan, especially when GM played with the band. It was a mad time the 70's when there were so many artists in the mix like Greenslade, Gentle Giant, Atomic Rooster, Steve Hillage without even mentioning the giants like Yes, Floyd, ELP and Genesis. The genre disappeared beneath the radar for a while but its never gone away. Classic Rock even has a new offshoot magazine called Prog Rock.

It was CR that introduced me to Threshold. Any ThreshHeads out there? Awesome power-metal progressive rock.

I would have to agree though that Rush have remained true to the spirit of the genre throughout their long career and remain a top sell out act wherever they play. My ageing original vinyl copies of theirs are treasured possessions.

That said one of my favourite LP's is still 'Moving Waves' by Focus despite Thys Van Leer's yodelling lol

I'd like to know are there any progressive rock listeners here? Talking about this genre I mean, first of all, the bands from 70s, such as King Crimson, Genesis, ELP, Gentle Giant, Rush, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and many many others. I'm not much fond of a so-called progressive metal as its idea seems to be something like "being complicated for being complicated", but it's just my opinion. I'm interested in what progressive rock bands are listened to and loved in other countries, like the US and european ones. As one of me my friens says, stay progressive!:)

Just to say, i am a Prog Rock fan, with YES at the top of my list, followed closely by RUSH, but are Rush really Prog ? Hmm... i'm not so sure. Anyway...that is another debate! i could go on and mention other bands that have influenced my musical education, but it is a big subject to write about here and now, but one i will come back to another time.

Now Brack, behave yourself smile. I had chosen to ignore you bringing football on to the forum (probably more contentious than politics in my book), but to start hinting that Rush can't reside under the prog banner is being equally mischievious.

The kind of material they were singing and playing about from their earliest days couldn't have fitted into any other genre. Over time their style might have developed/morphed into something more but the roots remain. Like Yes, like Floyd and Genesis. What defines Prog Rock anyway? If it is demons, wizards, future worlds, starship troopers, snow dogs and tracks lasting over 27 minutes then Rush, like Yes, Floyd and all the others tick the right boxes.

But lets not have the debate anytime soon, or on football either.;)

I have all of their original vinyl lps. Great cover art!

Re: Progressive Rock

My oldest brother owned every Zappa album, but I now only really listen to him on the radio...and usually still laugh at some of the lyrics big_smile BUT I never thought of him as prog.

I recently got tickets for YES and Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson.  The Tull show is advertised as a solo acoustical tour, its only a 16 show tour, should be interesting and different than any Tull related show I've ever seen.

And Rocket, you are a total sweetheart for thinking of me. smile I'm not sure what kind of $$ we're talking about BUT IF you see In the Court of Crimson King in vinyl with the original poster enclosed that it came with (enlarged poster of the album cover) I would be willing to pay $40-$45, just in case you come across it in your travels. The poster is not available to buy anywhere. Thanks, you're awesome Rocket!  By the way, my son's friends at school call him an old man...for his taste in old music.  He just turned 20. lol
