Topic: Johnny A

Here is a couple of clips of one of the few guys that impressed me since I have been a fan of Joe.

From a live show his closing song

From his instructional video

He is apples to oranges compared to Mr B. Strictly instrumental but don't hold that against him. Not as charming as Joe or Davey. I have my own theory of what A stands for.

I saw him 2 or 3 years ago years ago when he opened for Sonny at the Rex.  I was a little slow to warm up to him until that finale, but that was an eye opener.  He's also got a killer rhythm section.....at least he did at the time, not sure about now.....

And I catch yer drift about the "theory".....I had the same impression.....

This is one of my guitar playing roomie's favorites. He is technically spot on. I find his music a bit "jazzy", the only way I can describe it. I think he is another of those guitar player's guitar player. He also has a signature Fender my roomie wants.   Cathy

Re: Johnny A

Actually it is a Johnny A model Gibson. The designed him one from the ground up. Not a Les Paul or a ES it is its own model.

Yes I know what you mean Cathy. I wouldn't ordinarilly be drawn to him because of the instrumentals and the Jazzy style. His CD's get heavy rotation on my playlist. I liked his CD then didn't see him live for a couple of years. Didn't dissapoint. I saw him in Dallas jam with Joe and blues isn't his thing.

Re: Johnny A

Gibson...that's better! Sorry for the confusion..(smacks her own hands). Thanks for the correction Jim.     Cathy

Re: Johnny A

Johnny A is great, I remember in 2002, his blues "Oh Yeah" got a ton of airplay on rock radio.

One of my cohorts from a local blues jam I frequent owns one...it's a beauty....think he said it set him back about 4G's.

I went to see him on the basis that he had opened a show for Joe....I liked his playing but didn't hit me like Joe.  I would tend to agree with the guess about what the "A" stands for....he was definitely not as warm & fuzzy as Joe.  Good player, though.

Re: Johnny A

I went through a big jazz stage in the early 90's, so I've enjoyed mixed up jazzy music for a while with Herb Albert, Chuck Mangione, Grover Washington Jr., Freddy Hubbard, etc. back to the 70's.  (I think I was drawn back to it because I was sleep deprived and totally running on empty with 3 kids in diapers...it suited my mental state...:D) I find something very peaceful about instrumental music, although I don't enjoy some of what I would call the avant-garde fusion stuff...to me, it always sounds like the musicians are in a constant state of tuning and warming up.

My hubby Anthony is a HUGE Johnny A fan, just totally connects to his music on every level!  Every new person we ever meet at any shows etc., Anthony mentions Johnny A.  He's street teaming for Johnny, whether he realizes it or not.  The first time we saw Johnny A, we drove through the beautiful & historical Valley Forge National Park where George Washington camped out in the winter with his troops to get to this little coffee house where only about 30 people sat in on this stellar performance.  We were so close to the stage, I could have touched Johnny.  I zoned into his hands, he is an absolutely amazing guitarist!!!  I could not believe what I was witnessing...this unbelievable guitarist with a gorgeous custom Gibson guitar (in 2 colors) and hardly anyone knows about him?  Yeah, I always have a soft spot for these artists and wonder why they aren't more popular, but that's another story.  Just an eclectic, eccentric guy, doing what he loves...he says he comes back to the Philly area since he has a fan base that "gets him".  The last time we saw him, he played a larger venue.

Jim, I mentioned to Johnny that I "knew" you and also that we were big Bonamassa fans.;) I told him he needed a street team and we signed up to be on his e-mail list, never got a thing.  What ever happened to that Live CD recorded in the Northeast, was it ever released?

Re: Johnny A

You confessed to knowing me? I love what he does on stage. He can be a little trying off. We haven't spoken in over a year.

That is one of the points made in the BDS thread how they connect with their audiences and fans and it makes people want to get out there and work for them. Joe does that. I don't think Johnny manages that well. I have had him here 4 times and the first time in he was more engaging to the audience. The other times were different circumstances and both of us were a little stressed. He is old school musician and thinks old school. I just think in small venues you need to make that extra effort to connect during and after the show. You have to get that word of mouth going by making a good impression not just on stage but off.

The last I heard about the live album was he was having issues with his label and till those are resolved his hands are tied. I hope he gets it out soon.

Re: Johnny A

We saw Johnny A last night for the 3rd or 4th time.  I'm posting this just in case you are not familiar with him, what an outstanding guitar player he is!!  His style is a fusion of different genres: rock, blues, jazz, country, all instrumental on Johnny's beautiful custom Gibson.

I've sat really close to him the last 2 shows and just watched his hands, which are amazing the way they move around the fretboard...Johnny is a very small framed guy and his hands are small and his fingers aren't very long, so that amazes me even more about him.

He told a couple of cool stories last night.  He's from Boston, so that's the first place his music was accepted then on to Philly (public radio WXPN) and Austin, Texas next.  The first time he played Philly was a horrible experience, he was the warm-up for Aerosmith at the Tower Theater and the crowd didn't like him at all, except maybe the last song....just left him feeling terrible.

Here's his schedule and for anyone in the Maryland area, Johnny is playing at the Ramshead with Duke Robillard and on another night with Albert Cummings.
