Well, I'm officially sold!! Having seen a few videos on Youtube, and on the recommendations of one forum member in particular, I purchased Oli's debut album....and I must admit i wasn't completely sold at the time, as decent as it was for a debut CD!! However, I definitely wanted to see him live, based on what I'd seen, and on what I'd heard through word of mouth.
I finally got to see him play last night at the Robin 2, and boy did he blow the roof off the place. Such a talent, with fantastic stage presence, natural charisma and confidence, and such a strong voice. I did have to keep reminding myself of how young he actually was. He's got a really tight trio going, and they were all really in the groove, and enjoying themselves.....and the crowd certainly were!! There was also some humourous banter between Oli and some slightly rowdy, and slightly tipsy Brummies (during Oli's mic-less section of Stone Cold), and the place was really buzzing by the second set.
Also, I have to say I admire Oli for switching from F@#$%r to his signature Vanquish guitar, it really allows him to express himself and distances him from all the "clone" talk and obvious comparisons that always seem to surround such skilled F@#$%r guitar players (and it looks and sounds sweet!! For that I admire him a lot.
Anyway, in terms of personal significance, I would definitely put this gig up there with the first time I saw Joe last year. Had a great time, and I urge anyone and everyone to catch this young trio, they're something to behold!!
