Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

To Lynnl- as Steve Martin use to say Excuse Me: the Lyn I was thinking of with the crush on David Gilmour was LynB from Poole, UK, sorry to mix you up.   smile

RiverCat- i love your taste in dance music...thanks for the details on the vocals, what a set of pipes Martha has, for sure.  I think I may have seen something about her on VH1, maybe one hit wonders?  Raining Men, ALWAYS reminds me of a trip I won with some other salespeople to an all expense paid trip in Bermuda.  Us ladies surrounded our boss on the dance floor to that number... Alleluia.    cool I need to Get Back to Bermuda, what a wonderful place.

Here's Grace's tour schedule, cool video ...hold on tight

I've been thinking exactly that, Rick. I'm not quite sure how they managed it, but they're certainly on a roll. Getting the black-haired bass player who's also got legs in the band was a stroke of genius. There's almost an 'Abba-like' (shudder) feel to them on these tv clips. Maybe that's why they deliberately made an album that crosses over numerous genres.

I totally understand why many here have a problem getting into Grace. I suffer almost constant pangs of conscience, when a little voice says, 'hey, this is pop music', and most of me agrees. Then the other voice kicks in and says,'yeah, but you didn't get into GPN with this music, you got into the older, 'heavier', 'bluesier' stuff, and you got into it live - hell of a difference'. My first taste of GPN was the copies of their two D.C. shows in 07 that Tarus 52 kindly gave me in 08. I re-discovered the cds earlier this year, and suddenly I was seriously hooked. The rest.....has been obvious here.  big_smile

I have never been able to see them live because they've never been over here, where they really are totally unknown. But going by everything I've seen on youtube, this band does a killer live show that is very, very different to the polished sound of the current album, which is getting so much media attention and possibly starting their path to (inter-) national recognition.

So, I've decided not to 'condemn' them for producing something so potentially 'mainstream', but just to sit back and dig the tunes I like most and wait for my chance to ogle Grace in the flesh. I mean, let's be honest, this woman is seriously HOT. Why shouldn't she become the next Debbie Harry, for example?  tongue  Good luck to her!

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Agreed George. She paid her dues doing the small club scene and making it on her talent. Now some genius saw the potential, gave the band a facelift, ran her through some pro tutelage on how to shake it and booked some unbelievable face time on National TV. Good on her to make some big bucks. You may see an international tour with a show near you next year.
(I'll admit I like Abba's music too. The harmonies of those voices was great, and the Nordic beauties! yikes ) Oh dear, I've ventured over to the dark side.... neutral  wink

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Let's see .  Somebody rises up out of the small club scene on their talent.  The potential was seen.  The facelift was given.  The big tours and the big time came and the critics pissed and moaned while millions of new fans joined the slobbering gobsmacked.  cool

Never heard that story before...  hmm

I was actually at this exact show :-)   The camera just loves Grace, don't it? tongue

FWIW.....I first "fell" for her voice and Hammond organ chops, and the well-written songs on her first official CD release "Nothing But The Water", which I HIGHLY recommend, and, for the moment, like more than her most recent eponymous release, which I concur leans a bit heavily towards "pop".  But I can't blame her for wanting to release music that appeals to a broader audience as she is actually (trying?) to make a living for herself with only music.  Also, some of the songs which left me flat on the CD were much improved in a live performance, so there's that.

The fact that she's taking advantage of heredity to sell her product, I say "you GO girl!".  But seriously...I would like to see us try and refocus this thread on her and the band's musical talent.

Just my humble $0.02.

You're a lucky man, Moe. And a fine photographer! Muchos thanks for posting these great pics!! Talk about someone being photogenic, jeez!

I also liked several of the shots of her dark counterpart, who has incredibly long legs and fingers!! - 58 is my favorite, I think, but I like lots of these shots. Great stuff, Moe.  cool

Re: Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

Well she's really hit the big time now(joking), ESPN SportsCenter this morning ran Hot Summer Nights as their music insert for the morning. They had been stuck on Stone Temple Pilots for a long time, and recently went to some of Ozzy's new stuff. They just run a little 10 to 15 second snippet, but give you the artist and song name. They listed the artist as Grace Potter, not GP & the Nocturnals. I know they have a huge morning audience, this should pull in a few more fans. I'm still waiting for them to get Joe on there one day, BOJH would be perfect since they like to use harder rocking numbers.
