Topic: corporations telling you what to listen to

well i was wrighting back to someone on another thread and this thought came to me as so many do .
what if all the people around the world (we can start it with this site) that hate that corporations tell you what to listen to get together and we all chip in 5 to 10 dollars and start your own music business and take over . we can put out the music we like to hear . it would only take a few dollars to get it started. maybe a 100,000 people maybe less and two payments of 5 to 10 dollars then after that we should generate enough money to keep the company going . everyone who donates would be a share holder and split the profits we would make it a communite music corporation . well let me know what you think about the idea . i did this thread to see if i'm the only one out there that can't stand the fact that a guy like joe who is a great guitar player and musican and blows away alot of these other musicans that are making millions on crap music and the rap guys who don't even play music they just steal beats and samples from other peoples music and throw in some i killed you mother and raped your sister lyrics and they are making millions also . then you have joe and alot of other great musicans out there touring like crazy trying to build fan base and get to where theses other musican and they still don't get any help from the music world . you would think that joe has been the number one blues guy for 3 maybe 4 years running now and he still gets no radio play and you have to pull teeth to get a station to play him and if they do its a one shot deal . ok now i am ramblin' let me know what you guys and gals think .........joe

Re: corporations telling you what to listen to

5 to 10 seemed like a price people can handle . as for frank and rocco they are already with me so i do think i have to worry about them . as for the money thing i would set up a account that everyone who donates would be able to check out . also we would have to put together a board of people from pres to tres and then find a place where we can buy a building that we can set up for a studio and maybe a concert hall so we can get money coming in from the studio and from the concert hall ......joe

joe,

I'm in. But $5 to $10? Hey man, are you getting cheap in your old age? Let's start at least at $20 and go up from there. Hey, who's going to hold the cash? Not to say you shouldn't, because I trust you joe. Besides just remember, I've got your address. Don't make me send Frank and Rocco to come collecting someday, Capis?

P. S. Hey, all you other Pisans out there, make joe an offer he can't refuse.

Well Joe,

You could count me in, too - the only problem is that 4 major lables control nearly the whole market and a little bunch of Blueslovers will have a hard time rivaling against Sony BMG, Universal and Co. wink

On this forum you get the nice and comforting feeling of not being the only person who doesn´t want to listen to the average britneyjustin50centrihannapdiddy - crap, but if you take a look at what these people earn, then that feeling vanishes quicker than you can say the word "minority". THIS -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9muADLVPjq8 has been Number 1 on the german charts for WEEKS. Number 1 !
If you see something like that you´ve got to be pretty tough to not just give it up and let the people listen to crap.

But it´s all worth a try, so count me in! wink

I think we need a slightly more detailed plan.
In the meantime however, I really would like to encourage evryone to contact your local stations and tell them politely what you need. It helps to compliment them when appropriate and relate to their station, that is listen at least somewhat so you know what you are talking about.
Its not just because of my influenece and it might not exactly take off in full flight but i have noticed a change in the music in the one station i have been sharing my comments with for a few years. unfortunately for me it is changing non-music wise in some ways I am not loving but hey, this is about the music. i can't help but wonder if pointing certain things out to them and encouraging others has helped. don't think it has hurt thats for sure. because its always nice...

anyway they have been relying on some marketing surveys which are total bunk, so I have been explaining how everyone i know likes alot of what is played but need a wider selection and also some new stuff that fits in the style.
goes back to not letting rock and roll go geezer (this includes some blues) if we keep 'classic' rock old and no new, it will be oldies.
if we don't encourage 'regular' rock stations to play it, there's little left kids can be proud of...
anyway when they do play something out of the box or off the playlist, thats when you let them know you like it and why

so i think your idea joe maybe needs a comprehensive survey which will let people say what they really want, and at the same time it can show them what is possible with their power smile

Re: corporations telling you what to listen to

the idea would be to run everything urselfs . i mean from recording to promotion even concerts and even a radio station in a major market . so we would cut pretty much eveyone out . so those big companies can do whatthey do and we can do what we do .i'm sure alot of people would jump aboard if they had a chance to listen to real music instead of all the crap out there ........joe

I think it's hilarious that sweet Jane goes from cursing out the Italian Stallion to suggesting a polite conversation with the local dum.. er disc jockeys.  lol

I read what Jane writes.  I read what Joe Beacon writes.  I think it's much more than a pipe dream.  It can be done.  It won't be for the faint of heart or the easily discouraged.

Neither is it for the terminally defiant nor the idle dreamers.  Not trying to be a buzz kill.  It could be done!  Just some caveats!  It's business.

The last one being that we could not become what we loathe...guilty of close-mindedness.

Re: corporations telling you what to listen to

As long as there has been a record business, there has been fluff. Those are quick moneymakers. It's been around, and will continue to be (The Archies anybody?). So why worry. Just do your best to support the music that you like. When people are ready they'll move on to something with a bit more oomph.

Re: corporations telling you what to listen to

jeff you seem to be on the same page i am , some battles i let slide and some i jump into like a mad man this one i think needs to be jumped into and with some real hard work i think it can be pulled of . the funny thing is where i am on long island there was grumans they made all the planes for the airforce the f-14 and all that stuff . they owned alot of land out here and there a bunch of airplane hangers that are just sitting out here and up for sale for pretty cheap . so i was thinking we can get one maybe two hangers all the land and open up a cool record studio / concert hall . well my dream has always been to open a concert hall  so maybe i can kill two birds with one stone and get out the music i love and promote concerts all at the same time ................joe

Re: corporations telling you what to listen to

I admire the spirit of this and I'm sounding way too negative I know but wouldn't we become another corporation? (George Orwells 'Animal Farm'???) Crap sells because most people don't care. You're preaching to the converted and the converted will always listen outside of the mainstream. The unconverted don't give a damn because they're happy with what they've got. That's why Britney sells and Buddy doesn't. You can't educate everybody to think like we do (and whose to say we're right and they're wrong?). There are radio stations and venues that already cater for our tastes but they're never going to be high profile. Maybe we should support them more than we do.
