You North Americans make us Europeans laugh with your moaning. wink

We've been paying God knows how much more than you for many years already, so the shock factor may be less for us.

Holland and the UK have just about the most expensive gas in Europe. A liter of 95 octane 'Euro-leadfree' now costs slightly over 1.50 - in Euros! At current exchange rates of $1.50 to the Euro that means we're paying $2.25 per liter. Multiply by four (roughly) to convert to gallons and we're paying NINE BUCKS per gallon.

So stop complaining and buy smaller cars. wink

(This was an entirely non-political response.)

Oh my god George!!...NINE DOLLARS A GALLON mad ....my throat is dryer than a popcorn fart...I'll shut up about $3.43 a gallon

The point about having greater distances to cover is a fair one. I am also aware that not all Americans drive SUVs or Hummers or major gas guzzlers, but too many still do.

You are right, many do (although there are justifications for use of such vehichles, but most don't use them for those purposes).

Europeans do NOT have FREE health care. We pay monthly contributions - mine is nearly 200 bucks. It is true that our health insurance will cover major expenses far beyond what we contribute. For example, my late wife's three-weekly chemo cocktail that she received for 18 months, cost about 1000 euros a time and was fully covered.

Yeah see this is why I don't usually support such a system.  You have no choice.

I think my health insurance is less that that per month, and if I get sick or hurt, most of it is covered.  Plus, no waiting lists really.

I used to do a round trip of 100 miles a day for work, it's now 60 miles.

Sucks, doesn't it?

Free health care???? You've gotta be joking. We pay National Insurance....no choice...it's taken at source. It pays for our health care...except the waiting times for major ops are up to 6 months (less according to the government).....unless you're not born here....then you get it for free....at the tax payers expense! See, I think there is something very wrong about that.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.  I really don't know where people get the idea that people get free healthcare in some countries.

Re: Gasoline...are you kiddin me??

the city i live i(springfield, il) is kicking around the idea of throwing an extra tax on gas, supposedly to pay for roads(heres an idea you evil bloodsuckers, stop voting yourselves big raises every year and that can offset it instead of making people who do real working get an even stiffer one on gas).  luckily i live right next to a small town(literally as close as you can possibly get, the city limit is between our neighbor's backyard and ours) so i can get gas there and not get further screwed over on an extra tax.  i mean really if the city government needs more money i honestly can't think of a stupider way to ask for it.  gas is so high already.  increase the sales tax if need be, personally i don't think any big increase is needed at all, but if you have to why on gas.  good way to get your voters behind you, put an increase on an already obscenely high price.  that reminds me of how ever since the huge hike in gas prices the oil companies have been posting record profits...honestly how the hell are they getting away with this with the amount of money they are making it is clear this is not just an inevitable increase, it is going into the pockets of a bunch of billionares...honestly it makes me sick...we have the technology to make oil far far far far i cannot say it enough less necessary in our daily lives, yet it goes unused.

Re: Gasoline...are you kiddin me??

I live in the Enola/Mechanicsburg PA area, which is near Harrisburg PA, and lately we've been paying $3.15/gallon for 87 octane.  For a short time it had dropped down to the $2.95/$2.93 mark, but it soon shot back up.  Now I've gone to and through New Jersey a few times lately for concerts and noticed gas is significantly less there... I assume this mostly has to do with tax differences.  Ironically, because it's against the law to pump your own gas in NJ, you automatically get full service for that lower price. wink

Indeed the UK is a sucker for leeches unfortunately, far too many people not wanting to work and getting big hand outs for it. Fed up with the culture that goes on here makes you wonder is it worth trying hard?

Re: Gasoline...are you kiddin me??

Yeh Ges, same thing happened to me last week, very easy to make the mistake and select the expensive diesel when the name implied it was the cheaper option!!

I do about 35000 miles a year in my own car on business and I get an allowance from my company for the mileage I do, however it hasn't changed from 25p per mile for the last 4 years yet prices have rocketed, especially, with road tax, insurance and fuel, not to mention the rip off they call servicing every 20000 miles and £75 per tyre too. Lucky I get 48 mpg out of the VW Passat I drive, Great way to stablise your car expenditure if you're a company eh?

I also do about 35K a year.
That's a lot of music between the phone calls. It's simple. Turn on engine and Joe comes on as well. I bet some people thinks it's a VW factory fitted extra and part of the car wink No wonder my cerebral cortex has Joe songs engraved in it !!

Oh.....I listen to Paul Jones Show and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue as well on the radio.

The 16m Dutch (apparently) own 18m bicycles. *wide-eyed look of surprise*

Bit of a jaw dropper, that.

Yes, yes, the distances are all much smaller here and I understand that many people in the US simply can't cycle down to the local shop instead of driving.

But be fair, there is massive room for improvement in the general level of energy consciousness in the US. You guys really could be a lot more 'green'.

Old habits are hard to break .the US loves Big cars, trucks, suv'sportscars, ect.carsand vehicles have always been a way of life here.I feel at some point changes will come due to economics.

Re: Gasoline...are you kiddin me??

Europeans drive mostly small cars so they're gonna have better gas mileage and you don't have to worry as much when 2 small cars get in an accident. I'm sure not gonna drive a small car and be squashed like a bug when an SUV or a big truck hits me just to get better gas mileage. Gas mileage be damned.

Well the easiest way to attract those leeches is to give "free" handouts at the average taxpayers expense.

Interestingly enough, in terms of the amount of oil consumption per capita, the US is ranked 17th.  There are many more nations that consume much more than we do.  The Netherlands only consumes around 9 barrels per 1,000 people less than the US (they are ranked 26th).

I don't really think it is fair that a lot people point their finger at the US as some main culprit, when there are are many other nations that are consuming more oil per capita than the US.  Canada only consumes a tenth of a barrel less than the US, yet no one is complaining about them.

Sure, we could be more green.  So could everyone, really.

Re: Gasoline...are you kiddin me??

I think the current situation merely confirms that there is a god.

Being from an oil producing state and having lived through the oil bust of 1982. The most popular bumper sticker in town was the one that read. "dear God please give us another oil boom we promise not to screw it up this time."

Unfortunatley I have no oil company stock. I know more people employed either directly or indirectly in the oil industry than any other. including my immediate family. One mans feast is another mans poison.

I can't bring myself to be churlish about anything the day after yesterday's glorious news. big_smile

But I must point out Monty that I referred to "energy consciousness", which is rather different to per capita oil consumption. Of course, there is room for improvement in 'green thinking and living' everywhere. On the whole though, Europeans are further down that road than most Americans. I really believe that we think more about our use of energy and try to waste less.

Sure, but the main discussion always seems to come back to oil because 1) it's essentially a non-renewable resource, 2) it is dirty and a polutant and 3) it is the primary source of energy for most of the world.  Other sources of energy are much cleaner and "greener" and are less of an issue.

And while I'll be the first to admit that the US needs to clean up it's act, all too often I hear people around the world quick to point their finger at the US first when it comes to these things (despite the fact that there are 16 other countries that consume more per capita, and the next 6 or so countries behind the US just BARELY consume less than the US per capita).  I just don't think it is a very fair criticism to single out the US like that, which seems to happen frequently.

I'm gonna shut up, though, because this could turn into a political discussion quite quickly.  Then I would need to go take a bath because politics makes me feel dirty.
