Re: Music or Lyrics?

Mostly music. It's what grabs me first, and if the music is good, then the lyrics will get a showcase. However, bad, clumsy lyrics can almost ruin a composition. So, it's a delicate balance. I can't think of a time when I've actually been drawn to a song just by lyrics alone, and certainly not LIKED a song for the lyrics even when the music was sub par. But, when it all comes together, it's magical.

To take this a step further, I've always felt the hallmark of a truly great song is when the music creates or sets a mood that is consistent with the lyrics. You can have outstanding instrumentation, and you can have great lyrics - but if they don't fit together or bond emotionally, then the song will not achieve it's true potential.

There is a true synergistic effect that occurs when these two elements fit together. Thank You off of Led Zeppelin II and Black Sabbath from their S/T debut album are two examples of this...
