Topic: Old VS. New

This topic has been debated quite lively in this forum before. Generally I've come down on the side supporting new arrangements for old songs in the setlist. I've come across one new arrangement that upsets that trend. I much prefer old vs. new in this instance.

Re: Old VS. New

Hey PC,
How can I not chime in on my song.  I am in agreement with you on the old version, HOWEVER if and when I EVER get to bear witness to this song LIVE I will gladly accept any version Joe wants to play of it.  It scares me a little to talk about this song too much as I don't want to curse myself and not ever get to hear it.  (I just threw some salt over my shoulder lol will that keep me from being cursed? )  Absolutely think this song, my first Joe song ever, is too die for.  One of these days Joe Bonamassa, I am going to catch you doing this LIVE.

Re: Old VS. New

If I didn't know what song it was I would of had a hard time recognizing it.

The new version I'm sure would grow on me. I like the energy in the original though. I like his acoustic version which I have heard a time or two. It is more the same tempo as the electric.

I still like hearing songs reworked. Some hit some miss. I think it will morph again before we hear it over here Patty.

PS - this comment is no reflection on Chantal at all. We always enjoy it when Joe gets to interact with other players he respects. It is commentary/question on the structure of the song only.

I am assuming the "old" is more in line with the way BB does it.

Actually, BB"s is quite different from either. It has more of a jazz/swing type of feel with a horn section etc.

As far as old vs. new on this song, I like both of them. I don't have a strong preference for one over the other. It sounds like Joe added some new lyrics near the end of the new version.

Re: Old VS. New

Yeah, BB's version sounds nothing like either version of Joe's.

Re: Old VS. New

I was ready to dislike the remake, but I was wrong. It's a different flavor, sort of ZZTop, drippy ribs feel vs a sharp dry rub. I like them both. My issue is with the newer "Walk in my Shadow"..I liked the old, faster tempo. It's a defiant song to me and I liked it when it felt sassy!  I love when Joe resurrects some long lost gem and makes it his own. I guess I have to learn to allow him to re-work songs too..IMHO.....Cathy

Re: Old VS. New

After playing it for a few years, I like that he changes it up for a bit.  Thats artistic progression if you ask me. That being said, if I had to pick one, I do like the older version a bit more...

Re: Old VS. New

To be honest rather than You Upset Me Baby, I'd rather hear another cover from Blues Deluxe, such as Burning Hell, Walking Blues, Man Of Many Worlds or Pack It Up, but I guess that's that's not the question being asked here. Therefore I'll go for the new version cos that's what I'm likely to hear tomorrow night!

Re: Old VS. New

My take:

1. God, I wish I'd been there.
2. Thanks for posting this, Michael. You're da man.
3. How awesome was that jam with Chantal? That totally rocked.
4. This seems to be a trend of experimenting with snakier, funkier rhythms. I suspect Carmine and Rick have a hand in this.
5. This is why I massively *heart* Joe. This is a musician committed to his art and moving it forward in new directions. When a lot of musicians hone their shows until they're note for note recreations every night, about as unique as a can of Campbell's tomato soup, Joe is always bringing his audience something new.

So long answer short, I love both versions.

I'm just saying.

Re: Old VS. New

Nice Phil! (thumbs nose and grins)

The Funky Dr of Love's take:

Older is excellent; harder, more rocking, more straight ahead and just burns.  It's also easier to play.

Newer is funkier, slightly behind the beat, has grease dripping off the edges and smoke coming out its ears.  A lot of drummers could not do what Bogie does on this tune with Carmine & Rick.

It shows the soul, the tension and the power of this band, this arrangement.  It FEELS RIGHT to me.  New wins, IMO.

Re: Old VS. New

I love when Joe tweaks one of his songs...probably because of the anticipation of where he's going to take it...since I saw the Rockpalast dvd before ever seeing Joe, I'm partial to it...as i said in another post, it's my favorite dvd ever!!...so Joe can do no wrong in my book...hows that for some behind kissing  wink

I agree with Lee.  I like both of them for what they are.  It's like apples and oranges.  I like them both. smile

Re: Old VS. New

I've been thinking too Jane and it hit me..Joe said he's looking to make an American style blues CD..This version leans in that direction IMHO.....You know I like my music "nasty"..lol   Cathy

Re: Old VS. New

I like 'em both but the newer version seems to have a little more soul....maybe Joe's growing a little and it's showing in his interpretation's of old songs?

Re: Old VS. New

People often seem to feel a need to pigeon-hole things by "bigger, better, faster, more", whether music or otherwise.

Often you just have to conclude that it's "different' and give up on trying to determine a definite preference one way or another. When I was a kid, I couldn't understand why my father had numerous different versions of famous pieces of classical music. I do now. He could hear or feel a difference in the performances of different orchestras and different conductors.

I have about eight different versions of my favorite Bob Marley song, Heathen. I spent many fruitless hours comparing the differences in nuance here and there and trying to work out which version was my absolute favorite. In the end I gave up. I love them all, and am no longer bothered about determining a preference.

Sayeth the princess:  The old one has way better sound quality, so I like it better.  Okay says I.

Buuut, says she, This one has you all over it, it has more soul, different timing & I like the lady playing guitar with Joe and oh...is that Carmine?
