Re: Limit to a Person's speed on the axe?

Re: Limit to a Person's speed on the axe?

yeah,   im looking for clean playing as well as fast.  you ccan always go back and play more sloppily if you want to make it fit the style your going for(aka Jimmy page or something).  But I want that clean crisp and fast technique available to me as well.  I guess I gotta keep working at it.

Re: Limit to a Person's speed on the axe?

cj19m,

There's different ways to play fast. So, we need to be a little more specific as to what you want to achieve.

Can you name a specific player and song that would be a "pinnacle" for you to reach? If possible, maybe a youtube link to it?

What I mean by different ways to play fast, is approach and technique. For example, Scotty Anderson can play very fast, complex, multiple parts, simultaneously. He uses Hybrid picking. Eddie Van Halen can play tapped and left hand legato, very fast. Paul Gilbert can alternate pick like a Demon. Whereas Richie Kotzen replaced Paul in Mr. Big, and had to play those parts. But, Richie has an incredible Left hand. So, he approached the songs with more of a legato/left hand technique. Frank Gambale sweeps really fast. And I don't think any of these guys could really nail the playing of the others.

So, I think that's where the old advice of "find your own voice" comes from. You have to make some decisions. You can do anything you want. But, you can't really do everything you want.

Yeah, some players do have a natural gift for certain aspects of playing. But two of the fastest pickers in the world are left handed, and play right handed. (Steve Morse, and Michael Angelo Batio). And they use their "weaker" hand to do the picking.

So, which direction do you want to go? Let's figure this out, and get to work! LOL

Re: Limit to a Person's speed on the axe?

I have been reading all of the replies to this Topic . I am just wondering why Eric Johnson hasn't been mentioned. I bought his teaching video ( The Art Of Guitar ) if you learn everything on that video as well as he plays it you will be a monster player. I have seen him at least 5 times in my life. And he never ceases to amaze me. I think that playing fast is good as long as it has meaning to the song. People like Frank Gambale are also amazing. But when it comes down to technique what about Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Jeff beck all of these players have speed but know when to use it. I am with all of you that think Jimmy Page is a sloppy player. In my opinion the key to being a good player is knowing when to use speed and when to slow down.

I think the secret of fast 'n' clean on an axe lies in how good you are at keeping your fingers as close as possible to the fretboard without them flying around on it!! smile

That is PRECISELY what you see on that Yngwie vid, minimal picking motion and perfectly placed left hand... Tony Macalpine is also a master of this "minimalist" spped approach....
